Alright, here goes. 3rd firearm ever. Got it for 599 plus tax from gundealer. Chinese sks. Stock aint that bad. All numbers match except the bolt handle.

Growing up this was the only firearm ive seen being used the most around me and had my PAL only so i could own one(other reasons too but most prominent is this).

Touching my very own for the first time literally made me tear up and i cant exaggerate the feeling at all.

Who knows whats in store for tomorrow, rather buy one than cry for not being able to own one ever. Thanks to all you guys and gals for really kicking out my indecision and getting me convinced to get one.

Super pumped to have picked up this 590r chisel. Pun intended.

I grabbed a couple 6 round shell holders off amazon and got them mounted. On the receiver and the stock. OSight had a sale on the new se dpp so I picked one of those up aswell. I need to pick up a proper adaptor for it before I can actually use it but this printed one is good for mock up. Removed the the plastic cover for the chisel sight adaptor and was able to move the Magpul mbuis back a few slots. Have a carlsons rifled choke tube on the way and plan on adding a +1 tube extension and a ms1 sling. Over all pretty happy with this purchase. And yes I left the yellow mossberg tube cover on just piss people off

I prefer velcro from Perroz Designs (no i dont work for them nor get a kickback), but theres no place on this firearm to mount one.

Anyone know of a 3 or 4 round mlok shell holder that doesnt include a pic rail? I don't want matchsaverz as they are only one extra shell, and i have a few, although I'll have to go with that if I must.

I don't have the KS7 carry handle. The Defender model I have doesn't come with it.

Canadians Are Buying More Guns

Like it or not, many people feel safer with a firearm at home

Gun licence applications are on the rise in the Greater Toronto Area. Between 2016 and 2025, the number of applicants for possession and acquisition licences, or PALs—the permits that allow Canadians to buy firearms—have increased by nearly 50 per cent. In some parts of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, like the eastern suburb of Peel, they’ve more than doubled. And southern Ontario isn’t the only place where this is happening. The number of PAL licence holders across Canada is quickly nearing 2.5 million, the highest count on record.

For a lot of Canadians, this doesn’t square with our self-image. Our gun culture—or supposed lack thereof—has always been a major way we differentiate ourselves from the U.S. We tell ourselves that, unlike our trigger-happy southern neighbours, firearms in Canada aren’t a cornerstone of our lives or our Constitution. To a certain extent, this is true.

In the past few decades, as American gun culture became more strident, Canada has enacted a series of ever-stricter gun-control laws. In 1995, Parliament passed a landmark bill introducing universal licensing for all firearms and a registry to track them. After the 2020 rampage shooting in Nova Scotia, the Trudeau government outlawed more than 1,500 models and variants of firearms. That list was expanded in 2024, and again by the Carney government in March of this year. In 2022, Canada also put a freeze on handgun sales. Compared to America’s open-carry laws, which allow grocery shoppers to carry handguns as they buy their broccoli, Canada is obviously tame by comparison.

But it would be wrong to say that this country has no gun culture. I know because I’m part of it. I shot a rifle for the first time as a Boy Scout when I was 12 years old. Now I shoot recreationally at a range near my home in Ontario. I’m part of the seven per cent of Canadian adults who own guns. It’s a number far lower than America’s 32 per cent, but it’s certainly not nothing.

People are buying guns now for different reasons than they did a few decades ago. In the ’70s, only 20 per cent of Americans said they owned a gun for self-defence, with the vast majority using their firearms for hunting. Nowadays, self-defence is the main motivation for more than 75 per cent of gun owners. A similar trend followed in Canada: in 2023, 30 per cent of gun-owning Canadians said self-defence was their primary reason for owning a gun, up from only six per cent in the late 1990s.

Gun ownership is also changing demographically: the days when gun owners were almost exclusively older white men like myself are gone, and the gender, age and racial makeup of the gun-owning public is looking a lot more like that of Canada’s general population. Since the 1980s, women have been the fastest-growing demographic of gun owners, now representing 13 per cent of them.

The rise of gun ownership is a natural consequence of a world that seems a lot scarier than it used to. I recently spoke with a man who said he’d been considering getting his firearms licence for some time, but Trump’s threats to make Canada the 51st state finally pushed him over the edge. The link between threatening events and gun ownership is clear. During the COVID-19 pandemic, for instance, gun purchases in both the U.S. and Canada rose significantly. In Canada, our safe storage regulations mean most guns are kept in locked boxes or safes, making their self-defence capabilities pretty meagre. But for many people, simply owning a gun offers a feeling of security.

Gun ownership is also on the rise among newcomers. Many move to Canada from countries where guns are more strictly regulated and want to take advantage of the freedom to own a firearm. On the flip side, some newcomers come from places where guns are the norm. In Pakistan, for example, there’s a strong hunting culture, and firearm ownership is common. Turkey has a massive small arms industry, and guns have a deep symbolic value. It’s why the Turkish president gifted Mark Carney a revolver at the NATO summit in July.

The growth in licensing and ownership is partly due to the rising popularity of tactical sports, like 3-Gun or IPSC, which simulate combat, and which have spread largely via social media. Entirely new demographics are being exposed to the idea of gun ownership, disrupting the traditional model, which relied on family members passing down skills and firearms. At my rural gun range, the mix of members and guests reflects these changing demographics.

We’ll never have a gun culture like the U.S. Our licensing laws, training requirements and other restrictions prevent it from taking hold, even if there was an appetite for it. We have no second amendment enshrining the right to bear arms or castle law to protect gun-wielding homeowners. Nor do we have a historic cowboy culture to look back on. By and large, Canadian gun owners are also proud of our safety culture. They know that when people get killed by guns, gun control ramps up. So safety measures aren’t viewed as an imposition, but rather common-sense rules that make the use of guns safer for all of us.

But what we are getting closer to is a culture where, like in the U.S., guns are a flavour of normal. In rural areas, this has always been true, but more and more city-dwellers are now interested in guns. The idea of owning them has always been framed in Canada as something deviant—a bad behaviour reserved for those with malicious intent. This is changing. And as the world gets more dangerous, or at least feels like it, Canada’s conventional wisdom on guns will keep shifting toward greater acceptance.

Hi all, finally became an owner of a chinese type 56 sks. Looking for stock upgrade options.

I dont wish to put 69 different mods on my sks,

I also dont mind losing access to my bayonet.

Looking for a stock upgrade thatll be compatible with bipods/ mags and maybe just maybe ill put a short scope on her but not right now.

I was considering a choate dragunov stock as it looks filthy sick. But really dont want the fab defense ones. What other stocks or chassis systems would you guys recommend and from where. Please advise

Picked up a Benelli 121 SL80 from a friend, and it needed an appropriate sling.

Chambered in 2¾" 12 gauge with a fixed cylinder bore. This is the third 121 I've owned, and is unique as it comes with rifle sights and a raised comb on the buttstock.

I owned a unfired sks bought for 5xx as my first gun, and sold it for 700 after 3 months. I was happy to get rid of a 70 years old gun at that time. After one year, I have tried many guns from my friend and myself, like .22lr , shotgun, lever, bolt, I finally understand the value of a sks. Should I get a new one? I have been thinking it for the whole night. I cannot work, sleep and eat. Please help me.

I think the handguard looks a bit ugly, but that’s just me personally. I was wondering, as the title said, is anyone working on a MK-15 Handguard, preferably FAL, M16 style? From my understanding the handguard is proprietary sadly.
It would be awesome if someone could whip up a handguard for us, if they haven’t already started. TNA maybe?

●What to buy and an introduction.

Hey buddy, are you feeling a little depressed about the handgun freeze?

Yeah, me too.

But wouldn't it be great to have a hundgun anyway? One that doesn't require an authorization to transport, an exemption or even an RPAL/PAL [N1]?

May I introduce you to antique status firearms.

Any handgun made prior to 1898 is an antique [N2].

The handgun freeze does not apply to them.

So are you doomed to use flintlock or cap and ball revolvers? No.

You can use cartridge revolvers that use reloading supplies commonly found today.

Want a semiautomatic pistol? Buy the Mauser c96 (pre 1898) for the low, low price of about 25,000 dollars (estimate). Once you've finished crying, we can go back to those revolvers.

Gunpost is a great source for revolvers and also a terrible place full of decrepit, overpriced paperweights that would convert your hand into lasagna if you were ever crazy enough to fire it.

So, what to look for?

Those 44 Russians sure do look promising.

Oh my, looks like 44 Russian ammunition is a little more scarce than the sellers would have you believe.

Let's move on to my personal favourite, made by the worst people on earth.

That's right dear reader, THE FRENCH.

The service revolver model 1873 Chamelot-Delvigne, also known as the MAS mle 1873 was produced from 1873 to 1887.

Rather conveniently for us, this beautiful black powder revolver can be easily converted from 11mm French to 45ACP smokeless.

The process is extremely easy, so easy that the French resistance converted these to 45ACP in their bicycle shops during WW2.

But we'll be using a gunsmith, or just buy one pre cut like I did.

Now you've got a revolver chambered in 45ACP.

All set?

Hahahahahha.

No.

You see, the MAS mle 1873 was designed for 11mm French, which is about 11,000 PSI.

45ACP is around 23,000 PSI on the low end. Meaning that shooting 45ACP out of these is a solid gamble of getting some more of that hand lasagna from earlier.

It was a risk the French resistance took in WW2.

We're not doing that.

Never buy one of these revolvers if it has ever fired a factory 45ACP round. It is completely unsafe.

●How to reload on a budget and what supplies I used.

You will need the following [P2]:

Lee's classic loader 45ACP [N3]

.454 speer soft lead balls [N4]

Some type of case lube (seriously, use whatever)

Large pistol primers [N5]

A smokeless powder compatible with the .5cc scoop [N6]

45ACP brass [N7]

A rubber mallet

Safety glasses and hearing protection[N8]

Boxcutter knife

1.

Ensure your brass fits in every cylinder of your revolver [P3,4].

2.

If there is a spent primer in your brass, remove it now [P5,6].

3.

Lube brass and place into resizing die until flush [P7,8].

4.

Prime the brass [P9,10].

5.

Use a boxcutter/utility knife to chamfer the inner edge of the brass [P11].

6.

Use a compatible smokeless powder [N6] with the .5cc scoop provided [P12,13].

7.

Drop a .454 ball down into the sizing die and seat with the tool provided in the Lee kit [P14,15].

8.

Flip the sizing die over to create a small crimp[P16][N9].

9.

You are finished, you are ready to bypass the handgun freeze [P17].

●Notes explained.

N1:

You do not need an RPAL or PAL to purchase an antique, however, you will need one to buy gunpowder or primers.

N2:

Certain calibers are not allowed to be antiques.

N3:

The Lee classic loader is very time consuming compared to an expensive press. But the classic loader is about 65 bucks. A press can be up to and over 650 bucks.

N4:

I recommend soft lead balls because these firearms were not designed for copper. Copper will ruin these guns. I chose a ball because this round only travels around 600-700 fps. Ball = less friction due to less contact. Also minimizes the initial pressure spike.

We use .454, (meant for .455 webley) it's slightly larger than the .452 ACP bullet. This ensures engagement with the rifling.

N5:

Any large pistol primer works.

I do not recommend federal as they are pretty sensitive. These revolvers do not strike lightly. A primer going off during insertion into the brass won't kill you but you'll shit your pants.

N6:

I'm using Vihtavuori N320.

Other compatible smokeless powders will be seen in the comment labeled [C1] below.

N7:

Did you know Starline sells rimmed 45ACP? I didn't. Don't buy rimmed 45ACP. If you do, you'll have to carefully mill it down on your table saw by slowly rotating it against the fence. Not fun.

N8:

A primer going off during priming of the brass can happen. It won't kill you but you could go blind if hit in the eye. The hearing protection is also for the repeating mallet blows.

N9:

In most cases, you don't crimp 45ACP. We're doing a very tiny one because this is a revolver and the ball makes minimal contact with the brass. This crimp is very, very slight.

●Rough idea of the specs using the methods above.

Estimated PSI: 8-9,500 (well below the 11k max).

Estimated FPS: 600-700 (still lethal due to bullet weight, remain cautious).

Estimated max range: 85 feet (common for a revolver of this era).

●Closing remarks.

Look, I get it.

We all wish the freeze would end.

But it's time to look at things pragmaticly.

There's so much groaning over what's been lost, justifiably so.

However, there's still some joy to be found.

Try to find that joy and hold onto it.

Also you don't have to register antique handguns nor is your PAL run when you buy one so the feds can go fuck themselves.

Get out and shoot.

Don't break the law or they'll close this loophole and I will be very disappointed in you.

Carry the antique status paperwork on you and a copy of the law.

Not all cops are experts.

These guns are old, they're never being made a second time.

Treat them with respect.

Treat them in a way which will guarantee their use by future generations.
