Went to the range with my buddy to try out my fully cleaned SKS and was having a blast with it 10/10.
He wanted to get his rifle ready to get a bear starting sept 1st. So he invites me to take the first shot from his savage 110 in 300wsm. Tells me its a bit strong like the 308win Tikka i have. So i be prepared to shoot it.
HOLY FUCK B'Y !!
Like what on God's green earth is this tf!? Buddy died laughing and i was astonished by the power this cartridge has.
Guys who shoot this, dont knock on my door please. š
Brought it with me as a keepsake and as a goal to master it one day.
Didnt fire 9mm yet so cant tell but 22lr shit that doesnt feel like anything at all. I was worried after firing a 308win that ill need a recoil pad for my ruger 10/22 but somehow didnt do much reaearch on it and ended up going to the range without it and laughed at myself for even thinking they exist for the 10/22 for non comp guys like me xD
Hahhahaha that was a good read. No it is not an anti tank round. However Iāll give it to you that stock design and rifle weight matter more than the chambering up to a point. The savage 110 in the wsms stomps pretty good, and a fast recoil, snappy, not a hard shove but a mean fast punch.
My 450 Ackley (little bigger than a .458 Lott and a fair bit more power than a .458 win mag, to say nothing of the wee .45-70 everyone seems to think is a cannon š¤£) dishes out some stout recoil, and humbled me recently. Itās potent but very manageable from standing. But from a bench it is a completely different animal, nothing kicks that hard from standing compared to hunched over a table or prone on the ground.
I shot it a total of 31 times last Friday. This was my shoulder 3 days later ššš. Worth it, I do actually enjoy it, a bit of a masochist and recoil junkie by admission.
That 270 can also have pretty obnoxious muzzle blast, especially from a shorter barreled sporter.
Iām starting to believe that for many guns people are actually more flinchy and otherwise affected by the muzzle blast/concussion than the hit to the shoulder from recoil.
My browning x bolt in .300 Remington ultra mag actually doesnāt kick much, it has a very effective ārecoil hawgā muzzle brake. BUT HOLY BLAST WAVE BATMAN. Itās like a miniature 50 cal with that ridiculous muzzle blast and concussion, actually clears a bench off if youāve got stuff sitting on it sort of like a weaker version of what you see with a 50 BMG clearing a bench top. So freaking loud you feel it in your teeth haha. I made the mistake of shooting that thing with no ear protection. Once. Everything sounded underwater for a day or two after, I think it actually messed my one ear up.
I may take the brake off that one actually. Because, even as this post relays, despite the ugly bruise, your shoulder can take a lot more punishment than your eardrums, or at least it can recover from damage a lot better.
My brother you need to go to the HOSPITAL. like walk straight into the surgeons room and say you need a shoulder replacement. Holy fuck thats brutal. Yeah and dont knock on my door, just take what you want, the keys are under the mat. š /s (sarcasm about hospital part)
I assure you I am fine haha, shoulder is fine, itās been 8 days and is mostly normal but still kinda yellow bruised. All the blue stuff is cleared up. No pain or soreness whatsoever now.
Iāve had bruises like that before myself. Worst for me is I have a wrecked rotator cuff from an old injury so if I beat it up too much it takes me a month to get back shooting.
Oh yes that would change things no doubt! Bad Rotator cuffs and detached retinas, two things that donāt play well with elephant guns and 12 gauge single shots.
I have a Winchester model 70 extreme weather with a fluted barrel in 300wsm and I find the recoil to be more of a shove than a sharp punch like a 300 wm. Slower powder burn rate is my guess. I mean I do have a 458 win mag too so maybe I just love recoil.(Haven't shot it in 4 years because at 200+ for a box of 20 I can't afford to, have the rigging to reload and a pile of 520gr cast lead just never got around to it) Edit:spelling
I believe it's bell and Carlson fibre glass. So yeah maybe it is a tad heavier pretty sure it's still under 9 lbs (8. Something)
EDIT: looked it up on Winchester and it's 7.0lbs. + rings and a leupold vxr 3-9
Haha I have the ultimate shadow m70 in 300 wsm put 200 rounds through it last winter. I'm not scared of it but my friend has a life long flinch from that rifle.
I use 3ā trueball 1800fps in mine for bear, even use them in my shorty 12ā Churchill. They arenāt fun but to have confidence in them and control.
Iāve shot brenekes out of both and they kick like a mule and again Iām confident and in control, but the brenekes are expensive and I canāt just pick them up locally so mainly run the trueballs
Ive tried 3" 1780s fps 1oz in the same gun it wasnt near as bad I feel like weight of shot is really what fucks you up. I saw some 1 1/2oz slug from brenneke, i think id rather not try
My dad gave me about 30 boxes of mixed mystery 12 gauge. When I feel adventurous I take a box out and the maverick 88 and see what my shoulder can take. Some are super soft, some are wild ridiculous things my grandfather put together in the 70's.
Iāve never shot 45-70, but itās one on my list in the next few years. I fish a lot of backcountry areas full of grizzlies. Plus I just have a thing for classic lever guns, not my primary hunting guns but fun to shoot and great for bush carry and opportunity during hunting season at work.
Hahaha. Jokes aside. It did less damage than my .308. Was using a 250gr interlok soft point so it basically exited without violent deformation. I shot a bear the year before with a Norma round nose 308 and man did that do a lot of meat damage. 338 is one of those rounds that you want as little expansion as possible lol.
My grade 12 English teacher routinely went out to get moose; he described his buddy's .300WM as such:
"...went and hit a tree, took the side off the tree, and still killed the moose."
Years ago I ended up with a Winchester Mod 70 chambered in 416 Rem Mag (it was too cheap NOT to buy...and I'm an idiot). I was actually shaking when I touched off the first rounds. Pretty sure I still have loose fillings!
A friend had one of those Savages. A little too light so the recoil hurts. I ended up with a bruise across my forehead from when the scope caught my hat brim. Bit of lead shot and epoxy in the stock cured the kick.
I have shot my ar500 3/8 target with 7.62x39, 7,62x54r, 3006, 308, 6.5, slug .556, etc. Nothing but small pitting. But 300wm went throught like butter.
If it's really that bad for you, I'd think that there's probably a problem with your posture/grip. The 300 is really relatively tame as far as things go, and it really shouldn't be rocking your world. More like, 'shoulder starts to get a little bit sore after 5 or 6 shots.' If it downright hurts after one shot - well, make sure the gun is shouldered correctly and pulled in firmly to your shoulder, with your cheek weld firm and stable and your face not TOO close to the scope. A single shot should be mostly just loud, you really shouldn't feel any discomfort until your a few shots in.
Could also just be a poor fit. I had a 308 once that was FAR more uncomfortable to shoot than some of my big boomers (and I have some legitimately big ones)
Fired 50BMG a few times before and thatās just ridiculous but so much fun. Atleast my buddyās 50BMG weighed 18 or 19lbs so it didnāt jump too bad and had a break on it. Wouldnāt want to shoot that in a lighter chassis without a break thatās for sure.
Devils advocate hereā¦most .338 LAPUA rifles donāt hit your shoulder anywhere near as hard as the light hunting sporterweight rifles in .300 WSM.
Absolutely the 338 and 50 BMG are fun to shoot, not at all painful in my experience. BUT, theyāre heeeeavy rifles with big ass muzzle brakes. Heck the old 30-06 Remington pump I got my first deer with as a teenager 20 years ago beat the living piss out of a person compared to my .300 RUMā¦.
Yeah definitely, if they were light they would be impossible to shoot. Found 338 heavier than 50BMG but that 50BMG out weighed the 338 by 5-6 lbs and didnāt have a break.
One of my single shot 12ga hit about the same with 3.5ā goose loads or breneke slugs. Shot it a few times with those loads and it is more than ridiculous. Shot basically one of each to see how it would be, and nope not shooting those out of it again. Had my shoulder bruised for a week and a half afterwards and couldnāt shoot anything else after that afternoon.
Just buy a 410 or 20ga. Or just shoot mini shells for a 12ga. I can shoot the mini shells one handed out of my 12ā Churchill 12ga. It wonāt cycle them but I know the Mossberg 590s do.
Im still a very new shooter and man, im honestly scared to shoot high calibers at the moment. But hey gotta experience it atleast right? XD will try out a lapua magnum sometime soon
Just picking, I generally hate heavy recoil myself. Iāve shot many guns that kick like a mule, but my preferred calibres are 308 and 6.5 PRC for more reach in wide open country.
When I eventually get my bison draw Iāll just be using my 308. Most shots are 100yard and closer where Iāll be going.
I donāt find it bad, only shot a buddyās 6.5prc but donāt have one myself. Want one for sheep and goat hunting due to the flat shooting and speed. I know a few guides in BC that swear by the 6.5 and 7PRC for that kind of hunting.
Bruh, 308win is your preferred?? Hooolyy fuck b'y , i took my tikka t3x in 308win(first firearm ever and first one i shot) once and only once to the range and braved 10 rounds thats it. Might only be taking it out to fire one shot a year from now on as ut scared the shit out of me as well as kicked me back crazy
I grew up on 308 hunting deer in the maritimes. My old man had a Remington semi auto in 308 so I used that when he wasnāt hunting with it. It what he shot a lot of in the military in the 70s and in the RCMP in the 80s and 90s. Bought one due to having access to all the surplus FMJ he wanted and bought hunting ammo for it. We use to rip through a 30cal can full in an afternoon.
Bought mine due to it being versatile for deer through elk and moose, and due to the availability of cheap 308 for practice. Canāt wait till Labour Day weekend I have 200 rounds stacked ready to dial in my scope at my buddyās private range. We camp right out there and spend the weekend every year. Bird season will be open, and all my fall mushrooms will be out so itās a busy weekend of hunting, foraging, shooting and maybe some fishing too.
The simple version is that recoil is how fast the gun is sent crashing into you. In its most basic form, this is just momentum, and (bullet weight * bullet velocity) / (mass of the gun) is how that's calculated.
A gun that weighs twice as much recoils half as hard; a gun that weighs half as much recoils twice as hard. If you rigged up a (weightless) test stand where the gun was sitting on ice, the heavier one would be sent backwards twice as fast when fired.
.300WM (and .300WSM) are designed to come in at the upper limit of "how hard an 8-pound rifle can hit the average shooter before it actively injures them over multiple firings". You're ideally only going to shoot once, so the fact it will bite you is less relevant (or it's a long range rig that weighs 14 pounds, which cuts that recoil nearly in half). Sucks to sight them in, though.

Try and go to a .22 right after lol feels like an airsoft rifle
