Misc Why is the Derya TM22 so famous?
I recently purchased a TM22 Pro, and was wondering what makes it so popular? I’ve seen it in the subreddit multiple times, what’s your favourite part about the firearm?

It's cheap and cheerful, to build a similar 10/22 SBR, it'll cost about $1,500 -$2,000.
I still prefer my 10/22s but most people don't have or want to sink that much money into a 22LR plinker.

It is essentially the replacement to the GSG-16, which was a very popular cheap “cool” looking semi auto .22 with some modding capabilities, that scratched the itch for people who wanted to modify guns but didn’t want to spend a ton of money doing so.
When the GSGs got banned, the people who wanted a cool tactical looking .22 plinker needed a new gun to use.

Not all GSGs got banned. Just got a GSG 1911 Mauser 22LR that cost twice as much in the end as this Turkish toy. GSG is German made. All metal including the magazines.

I guess I was being a bit broad. When I said that I MAINLY meant the GSG-16 and the other similar models that were just a meh .22 semi that looked cool.
I’m assuming you have a ATC or something like that to get the 1911? I kinda wanted one when handguns were legal to transfer since the price point of a .45 1911 was way too high for freshly 18 year old me lol
Also still kicking myself for not being able to get my RPAL in time to buy a Tokarev TT-33 for $300.

Handguns are legal to transfer with an Olympic discipline 22LR exemption letter but you'll have to source new ones from the USA as Canadian retailers don't import new ones anymore. You can get pretty much any handgun in the 22LR version including the 1911. You wouldn't have been able to afford the .45 ammo anyway for regular range shooting/training. Imagine the cost of a few thousand rounds a year.

It's a massive upgrade over the GSG*

Yeah GSGs kinda gave me the same feeling as cheap Amazon “optics” if that comparison makes sense

The TM-22 is replacing my GSG-15 that I only got to use for a year. That GSG-15 was not only unbelievably accurate for what it was, it was AK reliable. My buddy and I both abused ours and they wouldn't hiccup on anything we threw into them. It wasn't until the 500 round mark the carbon build up from all the garbage we ran through them started to keep the bolt from going into battery.

Price. Looks. And SLIGHTLY (still turk) better QC than the usual turkish options.
Its gaining a good amount of aftermarket support aswell.

The OG aluminium ones with the 18" barrels were often tac drivers. The new ones since distro change are still cool but from what ive seen the quality isnt the same as before.

I’ve got one of those and with a shitty bipod and questionable scope I can punch a toonie 10 times at 50 yards. Good enough for squirrel hunting

The amount of times I’ve seen people state the tm22 isn’t accurate so “don’t bother putting anything more than a red dot”, on is wild. I was punching out centers last weekend at 50 yards, with a cvlife optic 2nd gen all aluminum 18”. It’s a fantastic tac 22. Mags suck tho lol

u/Ok-Raise-5115 Aug 09 '26
I’ve got 3 25 rounders and 4 10 rounders and the only ones I’ve ever had an issue with are the metal 10 rounders. I find they don’t set properly up in the magwell so they don’t grab the rounds

u/yolo_swagdaddy Aug 09 '26
My plastic mags all keep having the follower back smashed by the bolt after the last round. Couldn’t figure out why it kept rim-locking after I was making sure each round was perfectly loaded. Cut the backs down but now no bolt hold open.

If we had options, who would buy this shit

It's mostly cope, but rimfires still have a place even if the bans are undone. It's nice not spending hundreds on a range day.

With the 10/22 magazine limit there are no great options for uncapped semi .22lrs. From what I see it's basically between the Remington 597, Pietta PPS50, and then misc. Turkish guns with the TM22 being the most ubiquitous, and the Kral more recently. You can also get a magazine adapter for the 10/22 but at that point you're kind of degrading the proven reliability of the 10/22 platform.
None of the uncapped mag options are of particularly fantastic quality, so why not buy the cheapest and arguably coolest looking ones? I say that as a 10/22 purist who owns no other semi 22lrs

u/Curious_Joe2020 Aug 08 '26
Because if you have several rifles you want the magazines to be cross compatible with the 10/22 and this one is not and also can't take the Remington 597 adaptor or Ruger magazines of any kind.

u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 Aug 08 '26
I would prefer OEM Ruger magazines too, but the HC3R magazines run pretty well in my 10/22 once I figured out the loading method and ammo type (Federal AutoMatch). I do hate how the magazines pop apart at the worst possible time, but speed loading them is fantastic - 20 round in 5 -10 seconds.
The HC3R magazines are in short supply these days since DLASK closed down and TSC sold off a large batch in May.

It has a low cost to performance floor. The cost to build out an equivalent 10/22 with similar size, ergonomics, and magazine capacity will usually cost double to triple the TM22. You can definitely make a 10/22 better shooting and more ergonomic than a TM22, but it'll definitely cost a lot more.

Inexpensive, tactical, and reliable (sometimes). I still prefer the 10/22 but I was leaning towards the TM22 until I heard about regular fail to fire issues. Never heard any real complaints with the Ruger.

I didn't get one because they are not compatible with 10/22 magazines. I instead got a Ruger 10/22 modded to look like a HK G-36 and others like Adler Arms RF224 Tactical 11.7 and the new KRAL Arms KR22 Tactical. That way all the magazines are interchangeable both using the Remington 597 adaptor for 22 rounds and original Ruger BX-25 (pinned to 10). And of course the original rotary 10 rounds Ruger mags.

I have the 10/22 in the archangel stock. It’s heavy it’s fun and looks cool sure but I prefer both my tm22’s the pro and the iron wolf lever action. They are lighter more user friendly and so far for me just as reliable the ruger usually just sits on the wall now. The sights that come with the nomad are awful and I can’t find anything I really like for it I have bushnell trs25 that’s okay but doesn’t look great on the rifle

u/Elspin Aug 08 '26
Honestly I just got mine because it was way cheaper than building a 10/22 the way I wanted it but it's been an absolute machine running incredibly well with shockingly low maintenance

Cheap, reasonably accurate, compact and with an increasing aftermarket (in no small part due to Alex's Homebrew).
It's plain ol' good value once it's broken in and tinkered with a little (I had to pull my left side extractor out and now it runs like a dream)
I only run into failures to fire with very specific brands. No issues with CCI Blazer or Eley Subsonic. Didn't like CCI Quiet Semi as much.

I turned mine honestly into my cope gun, it’s short barrel with my fake can cool optics and mag covers. Can go to the range and mag dump a 25 without breaking the bank

I play a bit of the role there lol

I just picked up one of the 12 inch models a couple weeks ago and will be definitely placing an order for one of your charging handle kits in the next week or two haha. Like the gun a lot, but the stock side charging handle is trash compared to the 10/22.

Cheap, 25 round magazine, reasonably accurate, tacticool.
