Gun and gear reviews Misleading Claims

What are some of the misleading claims that you have heard from firearm manufacturers/hunting gear brands and hunting/shooting influencers?

Wondering because I often see ads for hunting rifles or shotguns being overhyped or just in the most unrealistic of situations. Or another example would be MDT's HNT26 chassis (I'm not hating on MDT, yes I have bought products from them) but I find it just unnecessary to pay that much for a chassis to do the same job that a Tikka T3x light or a pencil barrel Mauser would do.

I want to hear your thoughts.

I'm going to put the biggest one out there instantly the MOA accuracy guarantee. Albeit there is some truth to it as it means the quality control of the firearm is decent. However most brands of bolt action rifles can produce a 3-5 shot group at sub moa with the proper factory ammunition or load development. And most importantly skill. Most products sold do help to a degree but at the end of the day you can't better without training and learning.

Low sample size testing is the bases of so much fuddlore in the gun world

6

u/Parking_Media Apr 13 '26

And that's exactly what underpins these bullshit guarantees.

I can make a 3 round sub half moa group with an SKS if I have a spam can of ammo and a free afternoon.

The thing is also, with CNC technology being what it is now, most manufacturers can build a decent bolt action rifle.

This is the true answer. It was a big deal it one point because older rifles were minute of deer. With today's advancements anyone can make a sub moa gun.

Hnt26 is designed for a very specific market and that market is not guys buying off the shelf tikkas.

Arken was well known for paying reviewers to make positive comments while offering mediocre product.

Woox did basically the same thing and spent an inordinate about of time spamming ads on social media sites, including reddit. It was so bad that r/longrange had to institute automod for the brand name

Hey that's me I'm the off the shelf tikka hnt26 rifle guy.

Even got a 14" carbon barrel on order.

I even have the arken epl 4-16 x44 on order for it as well.

Am I meme?

I agree with you, sometimes I get down voted in here when I suggest people to buy discovery, vector or Athlon telling them it's better than arken and has a better QC and customer service.

7

u/DougMacRay617 Apr 13 '26

Discovery , arken, dnt all literally come out of the same factory lmfao. Budget glass is just that.

u/Remarkable_Vanilla34 Apr 13 '26

I mean to be fair, athlon offers some pretty high end stuff that is not comparable to those other brands. The cronus is arguably one of the best scopes in its class for the price point.

vector is fantastic. dont worry; we can be downvoted togther.

Woox is nice but overpriced. I bought the combo for my 590 and I love it but I dunno if I would do it again. In hindsight it was a stupid amount of money to spend on a shotgun that isn't worth much more than the stock I bought lol

Their issue was that they were allegedly paying folks to shill their product on socials and every gun sub/group had folks plugging the brand in a really inorganic way. They also had some quality control problems several years back that were IMO totally unacceptable in their price range that their cheerleader squad would gaslight folks over in comments.

How is the HNT 26 Misleading? its on par with all the lightweight high end custom stocks/chassis. Heck theyre $1000 less than some Manner options.

2

u/Longjumping_Deer3006 Apr 14 '26

I wouldn't say misleading but it makes you wonder if it's a marketing gimmick or something, like is it really necessary compared to say the Gen 3 chassis with just a polymer forend and AR tube/stock.

u/Parratt Garand Guy Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26

I mean the Light shitty stock gen 3 Base alone is 22oz before you ad anything to it. The HNT 26 has its place for lightweight mountain hunting.

The carbon fiber being warm to the touch vrs metal chassis was a welcome addition when I had one. I ended up moving to a Manners LRH however as I prefer a more traditional stock.

A more apt comparison would be the Beneli Lupo alpha doing all the fancy 3D printing to be 5.75lb while the Howa Superlight is just Normal and 4.5lbs

Any gun or ammo ads that mention “knock-down power” are basically just making up stuff.

Influencers trying to peddle trash optics as anywhere near the quality and refinement of actual high grade brands.

As much as many things are are overhyped, optics, especially scopes, are the one thing you shouldn't cheap out on. Their just complex machinery that can't be replicated for cheap and mass scale.

People want a cheap solution, they go to youtube or where ever and confirm their own baised. The amount of money people waste trying to buy junk usually cost more than it would to just invest in a proper scope the first time.

That doesn't mean you need to buy nighforce, but the Amazon special is cheap for a reason.

Ill take a cheap rifle with a quality optic over the opposite any day.

7

u/DougMacRay617 Apr 13 '26

I agreee you shouldn't cheap out on glass but if someone comes to me and wants to get into PRS or some other similar distance shooting and they have a tight budget il still point them to dnt/arken if it means getting them into the sport and growing the sport. What else are they to do? Spend 5k on a mk5hd and then wait another 6 months or however long they need to save up for a rifle and all the other shit required?

2

u/Remarkable_Vanilla34 Apr 13 '26

True, but by the time you get into a arken ep5 you paying almost as much as something like a vortex venom. I don't know much about the arken stuff, it does get get reviews but I have trouble trusting some of the people who peddle it.

That being said, 700 dollar optics are probably serviceable much longer than a cheap shit, especially if your shooting 22lr PRS.

My point was more that people buy a gun, their excited to shoot it, but then they see ammo costs, optic costs and rings etc and they cheap out buy that stuff and then immediately get frustrated by it, now there several hundred dollars in the hole because they searched the interest trying to find some cheap and opinions telling them it was a good choice.

I had a buddy who spent a bunch of money on a rifle and then had a cabelas scope with these janky pot metal rings mounted on it. He wasted more money trying to sight the thing in then it would have cost to just buy a better scope, which he had to do anyways.

Its actually something I run into at the range pretty frequently. And at matches I've run into a few people who are just starting who buy cheap stuff or the wrong stuff and then their frustrated with the experience.

But ya, I do agree with your point that trying to get into shooting, especially competitively is really expensive and there are somethings that need to be prioritized.

1

u/Dylan4570 Apr 13 '26

Have you compared a venom and an ep5 side by side?

I found the glass on the ep5 same or slightly better.

Obviously, ignoring the vortex having an amazing warranty

2

u/thecoolernameistaken Apr 13 '26

Code of arms on YouTube is fucking disgusting for shilling

2

u/Status_Ticket5044 Apr 14 '26

It's basically what passes as Crusader Arms' web/internet presence.

u/TheSockington Apr 13 '26

I started my journey looking at LPVOs from Vortex or Arken and I was looking at Meopta by the end. Sometimes they can sway if you have an open mind. But this is probably a minority

u/Pro7o7ype Apr 13 '26

The Marlin 1895SBL is not recommended for hunting T-Rex's, and there is no way they fact checked it before making that claim.

2

u/nschwart91 Apr 14 '26

At most I'd use it on a velociraptor.

1

u/Pro7o7ype Apr 14 '26

If you ever saw them

2

u/Longjumping_Deer3006 Apr 14 '26

Did Chris Pratt ever fire his 1895SBL in the first Jurassic World?

1

u/Pro7o7ype Apr 14 '26

I can't distinctly remember, but I'm sure he had to have used it at the end?

1

u/Longjumping_Deer3006 Apr 14 '26

All I know is that 45-70 will take out any living thing in NA and Europe.

I dunno man, I feel like a big cottonwood wouldn't really notice

I'm confused by the MDT thing. How does a factory spec tikka t3x offer the same as the HNT26 stock?

MDT provides an adjustable and folding buttstock, pistol grip, rifle bedding, and an M-LOK forend with an integrated ARCA rail, whilst allowing you to run AICS mags. The whole HNT26 package weights in below 2 pounds.

My factory polymer t3x stock doesn't offer any of that. It's just light.

I'm not an MDT stan, but I can't deny they offer a good value product. I would have got the field stock for my rifle, but they don't have it fit for lefthand yet. I went with an XRS, which is super slick compared to the factory stock. Definitely heavier though.

5

u/Birdybadass Apr 13 '26

Your MDT example is a really bad one as you’re complaining about the price of something instead of the function it performs. That’s very different from a misleading claim. If you don’t value the benefit they’re selling that’s your decision, but it doesn’t mean the benefit isn’t real. I get this from a buddy that thinks his tikka is just as nice as my sako - which is fine if all you care about is a buttery action and an accurate barrel. But that’s not all a sako is, the same way an MDT HNT26 isn’t just a light weight stock.

Two come to mind,

Girsan M9 clones: for the longest time had horrible reps from gun store guys, total dog shit blah blah. Girsan bought original tooling from beretta so they’re as close to an original you can get without the price shock. The Tisas hi power I can’t comment on where the tooling was from but they’re amazing Hi-power clones, so much so they discontinued civilian sales due to securing a military contract.

Turknelli being absolute dog shit shotguns: are they as good as Benelli probably not. Have I had a single issue with my sample size of 1, nope. Works like a charm every time and I got it for like $400 bucks. Came in a nice green too.

6

u/DougMacRay617 Apr 13 '26

Lmfao turk shotguns are still trash come let us know when u hit the 1k rnds mark in a cpl yrs

3

u/Ciggaris Apr 13 '26

I’ve personally put about 10K shells through my weatherby Orion sporting while shooting clays competitively before I upgraded. The thing never said no and always went bang. I will always recommend it to someone just getting into the sport who doesn’t want to spend $2K+ on a shotgun. There are shit Turkish guns and there are great Turkish guns. Just like there are shit American guns and great American guns. Unfortunately there are only shit Canadian guns so I’m not sure why turkey gets all the hate it does lol I think it would make more sense for people to direct their energies at blasting Canadian manufacturers so that they would step up to the plate with decent products, especially since they charge American gun prices for sub par products.

1

u/DougMacRay617 Apr 13 '26

Ahaha you aren't wrong about the Canadian guns. Its interesting you mentioned the orion sporting im getting into sporting clays given the lack of good options at reasonable prices the orion actually peaked my interest but i was under the impression the action was made in wyoming and the barrels were turkish. Ive handled multiple turkish & Brazilian cheap O/U like pointers, ege, boitios, churchills etc and the fit and finish alone is consistently so abysmal accross all those brands some even showing small cracks forming behind the tang (these are off the shelf unfired guns im talking about). After i seen the fractured stocks at other stores and i just couldnt take a chance on them. 10k thru the orion sounds impressive and youve peaked my interest if this is really true

The problem is they are so hit or miss.

To take a page from another community, reviews on Turkish shotguns are pretty well a "works on my machine" approval.

My operator is probably closing on 1000 rounds and ive only had a handful of malfunctions, most of which were remediated by bumping the charging handle to unstick the shell/lifter, and I have never cleaned the damn thing since I got it.

But then you hear people having catastrophic malfunctions after only a couple hundred rounds.

5

u/DougMacRay617 Apr 13 '26

The fact that its "hit or miss" is exactly the fuckin point. Me and 6 friends have 1301s of varrying gen's from the first gen 2nd gen and a mod2 we are all well past 2k with some of us fast approaching 5k round count Nobodys ever ran into ammo the guns dont like or any consistent malfs. The guns just work. But people will continue to buy shit tier shotguns shoot 250 rnds a year and claim "great quality never gave me an issues"

2

u/tyler111762 Resident Certified Millennial Punk Apr 13 '26

10000%

1301 is my go to recommendation for anyone looking for a semi auto shotgun.

Really wish there was a budget semi auto i could recomend like the mav88 is for pump guns, but they just do not exist.

2

u/TKB-059 bc Apr 13 '26

If I had to have only 1 shotgun, it'd be a 24 inch 1301 comp.

0

u/iatekane Apr 13 '26

Stoeger m3k is the budget semi I recommend if that’s all their budget allows

0

u/rastamasta45 Apr 13 '26

Hey I mean don’t get me wrong, a 1301 or M4 is infinitely better, also Turk Pump shotguns for some reason feel like airsoft, they don’t have that heft when cycling the action.

But their M4 clone I haven’t complained to much with it. It satisfied my M4 itch for a good price. My other guns already bankrupted me.
