Buy recommendations .22lr recommendations
What do y’all reccomend for a cheap semi auto .22

They are on sale on firearm outlet Canada for like 350 polymer stock or 380 for wood stock, however Ruger just did a refresh (model 32000) which includes new polymer stock with m-lok, threaded barrel ( not very useful for 22) ,auto bolt release so no more fiddly button, and the better bx trigger for $450, the trigger alone is 130 upgrade so the price was worth it to me just ordered it yesterday to go alongside my other 10/22.
Or if these bans get discarded, the gsg 16 is a fun gun to mess around with.

They have cycling issues unless kept meticulously clean. Even a tiny bit of extra gun oil gums them up HARD, they basically need to be run dry.
The magazines are kindy crappy too.
I've owned two over the years.

My grandfather bought one for me, I shot three mags and the magazine hold fell apart. Took it back to the dealer, he exchanged it for a new one right there and then. Fast forward 15 years and thousands of rounds it’s never broken anything else. Definitely likes the CCI ammo more but would recommend one any day of the week.
Disagree with the magazine comments in this thread, my three mags have ran flawlessly.

64 precision was the first rifle i bought.. no issues with CCi stingers the large mags were an issues... they said they hold 20 but i would only be able to put 15 in before the mag spring pressure caused it to jam

My buddy got a great deal on a winchester wildcat, its a suppressor ready model (not that we'll ever be able to own one) but its a great lightweight semiauto .22, I believe it can use ruger mags too

The Wildcat just feels like a blatant copy of the 10/22 when you fist pick it up, because it obviously is.
But Damn, do they shoot nice, cycle well, and are they ever light. Not customizable like it's granddaddy, but good enough out of the box!

Right??? If you aren't looking ti customize it, I see the argument to buy a non Ruger 10/22 and save a hundred bucks or so.
When we are talking 200 vs 300 bucks, like that's a big percentage, a 50% increase in price or a 33% decrease in price depending on which number you start with

Not a copy, not even close. Some of the new competitors are partial copies or incompatible-copies. Wildcat shares magazines and that's about it.
Otherwise agreed, except for achievable accuracy.
The biggest common problem is pricing. I keep seeing Ruggers for sale below $400, and few Wildcats in the same range; if you can get one near $200 don't hesitate.1

10/22 if you want an absolutely dummy proof and reliable set up. Theyre #1 for a reason, and pretty much unlimited aftermarket support for a huge budget range.
If you want tacticool out of the box, with a 50/50 chance of it being a non functional dud(turk gambling) that you need to send for warranty, and the other half still needing some tweaking to work properly, then go with a tm22.
I have both. Enjoy em both, the tm22 is just so sweet though 🤣 and 25rd magazines (for now) is always a plus

10/22 is the obvious choice.
I didn't want to customize or mess w magazines. I really enjoy my Marlin 60 for my semi 22

I really like my Winchester Wildcat. It’s less expensive, and does a lot more out of the box than most Ruger 10/22s.

I threw a red dot on it before I even had it fully out of the box, lol. That’s really all I did to it, though, and it wasn’t a nice red dot, even. The mags and disassembly are huge upgrades over the 10/22, I think.

Oh snap. You are right! I didn't realize it came with a rear peep (and a rail too which is really nice!)
I'm an irons sight guy, so this easily adds an extra 100 dollars or more of value to have the peep and the rail

Another vote for the Wildcat here. Its an excellent SA .22. Lightweight, accurate, its eaten all the ammo types Ive thrown through it. Pic rails top and bottom for scopes/red dots and bipod etc. Real easy removal of trigger group for cleaning. My girls (now teens) learned to shoot with it and they love it.

Ruger 10/22 just updated their models, I grabbed a nice stainless steel one off bullseye north. Cost me like $450 shipped.

I bought my 1022 about 40 years ago, put 10s of 1000s of rounds through it. It just works and rhere are all kinds of upgrades for it.

Would you still go 10/22 vs Wildcat or 597 for something like a Mapleseed? Or go CZ and just deal with the bolt.

Either semi, extra mags, and an adequate optic.
Wildcat's controls have better ergos but fitting the stock for LOP and cheek weld is typically worse, so there's no easy answer. Newer 10/22 models with the stock BX trigger solve both, for a price. (A custom 10/22 will have better balance and better trigger, which isn't feasible to do on a Wildcat, but that's a price bracket or two up.)

Holding onto my ISSC MK22 in the vein hope that someone realizes that, just because a .22lr semi-auto looks like a specific style of gun (SCAR (-L I think) ) doesnt actually mean it is that gun.

I have a remi 597 and it's great. Keep it clean, upgrade the extractor claw and run stingers, it's a great little gun.

a savage 64 can be had for $189. They are made in Canada and have a long lineage. Can be a bit ammo picky. but parts and accessories are available.

No one ever says the Winchester Wildcat. I’m saying the Winchester Wildcat.
I love mine, but I bought it under the idea that I have other rifles to tinker with, I want to pull this out of the cabinet and shoot and nothing else. In that regard, is lighter, has default last round bolt hold open, and is much easier to take down and clean than a 10/22.
The only real downsides are yes it’s turkshit but I’m at about 700 rounds with only 2 light strikes as my failures. There’s also very little aftermarket (none) but sometimes it’s important to remember - it’s not the got dang mlok flashlight that goes boom.

I recommend the Derya TM-22 if you want something that looks cool, or the Ruger 10/22 if you want something versatile and customizable. The Adler RF-224 is an option too, but I haven't heard great things about the quality and performance.

If you can get your hands on a used Marlin 795 they're the goat imo. Super consistent, chews almost any ammo, pretty decent aftermarket support.

Tm22 is nice i have the allmetal 18 inch but nobody talks about its weight…… shoots straight and pinpoint accuraccy with mine,trigger is nicer then the regular ruger 10/22 trigger. but iam getting a 10/22 since its lighter (well the carbon), and the magasine doesnt stick out ,i find the 10/22 more comfortable in hand and smaller footprint overall (if you dont want to touch metal you will add grips and stuff and add weight.) So basicly if i would use the 22 only for bench shooting i would of stopped there at the tm22, but if you want something more versatille and lets say future use proof i would tell you to get the 10/22 from the get go

You're basically down to the 10/22 or TM-22 Pro in Canada. There's a few other choices on the market, but these two are the most popular and common on this sub. The 10/22 is better if you're the type who likes to tinker and upgrade their stuff, while the TM-22 Pro is arguably a better rifle out of the box and has modern features like an M-Lok handguard and optic rail.
