Gun and gear reviews Pinned Wrong?

Post image

I bought 2BX-25 mags from a Canadian online supplier. Tried loading them today and they won't accept the 10th round. I reached out to Customer Service and was told "Unfortunately due to the way these magazines are pinned, many of them end up only holding 9 rounds." Isn't it more likely somebody is drilling and pinning your mags wrong"if the rivet was an 1/8" lower it would take the intended 10 rounds without issue.

Am I wrong to be peeved??

Am I allowed to move the rivet and pin it to its legal capacity?

Gees thank God for those pins, I feel safe.

I sleep so much better at night knowing criminals can't drill these out.

12

u/outdoorsaddix Mar 11 '26

Shhhhhh. That’s how you get pinned mags banned outright!!

5

u/Critical_cheese Mar 11 '26

I sleep even better at night knowing criminals can't import extended mags, unpinned mags, drugs, prohibited firearms, illegal guns, silencers and the list goes on.

Fyi. I don't sleep well at night

The legal capacity of the BX-25 may be 25 if the opinion of the RCMP about it end up being wrong.

Drill the pin out, post about it on reddit, and be the hero that challenge the opinion #absolutlynotlegaladvice

edit: to be absolutely clear if #absolutlynotlegaladvice does not make it obvious enough ; the second line is satire and nobody should try this regardless of the potential legality of a non-pinned BX-25/Butler Creek 25/22. The cost and/or stress of the process is not worth it, for anybody.

I thought the BX-25 also predated the Charger pistol, apparently I was wrong (Charger 2007, BX-25 2011)and it was probably the Butler Creek that gave me this impression.

There is still the question of "Is the Charger pistol commonly available in Canada ?". But that argument is way less robust than if "This mag was not designed for use in a handgun" was true.

If the majority of the population can not legally buy something, it could be argued that it's not commonly available. 🤷‍♂️ #goodluckincourt 😅

8

u/feeddageek Mar 11 '26

I'd never want this to be successfully argued in court by anyone, it would mean that all centerfire handgun magazine in Canada fall under 3(1)(a)(i) instead of 3(1)(b) and has to be pinned to 5.

So it is even worst, you'd need to get the number of registered Charger pistol from the Canadian Firearms Program, hope it is low enough, then argue that despite the many handgun in Canada that should still be considered commonly available because they are owned by tens of thousand of people, this one in particular should not be considered commonly available.

There is something like 136 in Canada.

Any more adapters coming down the pipeline out of curiosity ? Other than the 597

Wow, glad I live in a province that isn't communist.

You must not be from canada

1

u/Psyex Mar 16 '26

Just from the good part.

21

u/IPSC_Canuck Mar 11 '26

Doesn’t matter where you live in Canada, the firearms act is federal. Like it or not, even Alberta RCMP would be enforcing this law if it became an issue they couldn’t ignore.

2

u/Defiant_Impact_1957 Mar 11 '26

you think the RCMP are checking out 22 mags? lol

4

u/GodsGiftToWrenching Mar 11 '26

They wont go out of their way unless they're already checking you out for something

For example if you're camping in the bush and a fish cop comes by to check for your crown land camping pass and notices the firearms and magazines you were just using he will most likely check for pins or an "LAR-15 PISTOL MAGAZINE" engraving depending on the magazines he can immediately see

1

u/IPSC_Canuck Mar 11 '26

Having worked closely with lots of CO’s, I can tell you that unless they’re also a gunnie(and I’ve never met one who was), they don’t know enough about magazines, magazine law, or anything other than shotgun plug limits specific to hunting regulations to even know to look at your stuff.

Most of em had absolutely no idea you could have a semi auto shotgun that could hold more than 5 rds of 2 3/4” because it was chambered in 3 1/2”… it was a bear to get them to understand.

2

u/GodsGiftToWrenching Mar 12 '26

Well the time they rolled up on me and my buddy there was a .22, 9mm rifle, a couple semi auto .223's as well as a benelli M4 (pre December 2024) the officer asked my buddy and I if we were military because our carriers were visible (not donned and only had flat trainer plates in them) also for context I have long hair and a full beard so definitely not CAF. But any ways he checked every mag that was visible at the camp, we had to also clarify that the marked "LAR-15 pistol magazine" mags were indeed allowed to have a 10 round capacity.

So essentially while they don't know the specifics as well as folks like us do, they seem to be just knowledgeable enough to be potentially dangerous and lead to a shit show of a situation, and they know to check mags, at least in my experience

1

u/IPSC_Canuck Mar 12 '26

Interesting. I think it depends on who you get for sure. I only know about the guys I worked with in Ontario, and a few guys who were casual acquaintances in two other provinces.

This was also between 2017-2021, so they may have all been schooled on this stuff a little better since then.

2

u/GodsGiftToWrenching Mar 12 '26

Ah yeah that night be it, I'm in Alberta so that may be partly as to why the encounter was different

Thats fair, my encounter happened around 2022 I think so not too far off

2

u/Defiant_Impact_1957 Mar 13 '26

I've been advised to ask if the cop has their rpal, and if they don't, you can request a cop with an rpal come to check things instead, as cops don't know fire arms laws well.  A cop told me this

2

u/IPSC_Canuck Mar 14 '26

Not a bad idea.

1

u/IPSC_Canuck Mar 11 '26

I don’t think they’re just going around and checking them. No. They have better shit to do than harass supposedly law abiding people, but there are times when they would have to check. There are situations they could not just look the other way.

1

u/Psyex Mar 16 '26

That is the rub right there, if it became something they couldn't ignore. Well I shoot at a range and on private property. They would use that as an addon if your in the commission of a crime. I have shot alongside RCMP and Sheriffs without issue. Matter of fact it's never come up as a topic.

35

u/ryan9991 ALBERTA Mar 11 '26

Every province has the same rules bruh

1

u/Bambam4040 Mar 11 '26

I still take my 25 and 119 drum to the range

1

u/MourningWood1942 Mar 11 '26

I’d edit your post, goes against group rules. I know because I said something similar once and got a warning lol

14

u/feeddageek Mar 11 '26

I'm confident that my comments doesn't promote or suggest the breaking of Firearms laws or Criminal Code of Canada. Not enough to own one of theses (pinned or not) but I'll take my chance with moderation. And if they decide that the RCMP is a legislative body in Canada, or that my comment is low quality, well that's fine by me.

17

u/Low-HangingFruit Mar 11 '26

Reddit mods think they are the legislative body of the internet.

7

u/ThanksCarol Mar 11 '26

The mods here are pretty great tbh, I’ve never seen any issues. All posts are manually approved but due to the nature of the subreddit that’s probably the safer move. But I agree especially mods in Toronto, they’re fucked and high off their imaginary power

28

u/Ok_Rush_246 Mar 11 '26

Honestly those mags sucked even when they weren’t pinned. The one round under ain’t gonna make a difference and they really don’t want to accidentally have 11.

11

u/prosper_0 Mar 11 '26

that was going to be my smartass comment. Even brand new, the capacity (between jams) was WAAAY less than 10.

4

u/BigDaddyReaper Mar 11 '26

Plastic lid sucked, picked up a metal one in Montana that never failed. Threw the plastic one in the woods and never looked back

21

u/IntelligentGrade7316 Mar 11 '26

Drill new hole. Insert new rivet. Remove old rivet. Ensure that you are not wrong. If right, brag on Reddit. If wrong, welp, instant jail! See next paragraph.

If you remove the old rivet first... BOOM! Prohibited device, may as well posess a full auto machine gun. Instant danger to society. Reprehensible person, you.

CLARITY: NAL. Not legal advice. What you do in the privacy of your home is up to you. Just don't live stream it. Just in case.

4

u/canucklurker Mar 11 '26

Install new rivet, then remove old rivet. LEGAL

Remove old rivet, then install new rivet: JAIL

Overzealous RCMP officer jams 11th round in there: JAIL

12

u/King-Conn Mar 11 '26

Ever have a mag pinned so shittily that the rivet broke when you dropped it on the concrete while training for faster reloads?

Me either, for legal reasons.

2

u/prosper_0 Mar 11 '26

Long ago, I had an SKS that was epoxied to 5 (well, 6 actually, but that's besides the point). Epoxy doesn't stick to cosmoline.

Fortunately, easy to repair

6

u/Dizzy-Wedding5769 Mar 11 '26

You could redrill and rivet to make it hold 10

6

u/BigoteMexicano Mar 11 '26

Some AR 15 mags were like that too. Seems there just isn't much care to be exactly compliant instead of over compliant.

5

u/InspectorArtistic441 Mar 11 '26

Shouldnt have to pin them at all tbh

4

u/IPSC_Canuck Mar 11 '26

I had this with 2011 mags. They were pinned to BARELY accept 10 rounds but wouldn’t seat with the slide closed. I think this is just paranoia on the part of the importer/exporter. They don’t ever want to be in a situation where they end up non-compliant, because it ultimately could mean they lose the ability to run their business.

Fortunately, the way the 2011 mags are pinned, i was able to adjust them to accept no more than 10 rounds, and seat with the slide closed. So I’m not saying you should, or even could adjust these, but I am saying that as long as they don’t accept 11 rounds they meet the RCMP’s interpretation of the law, and do as you see fit.

7

u/Remote_Mistake6291 Mar 11 '26

It sucks, but I wouldn't move them.

3

u/MourningWood1942 Mar 11 '26

I would flip it over and drill the other side a bit lower, then drill out the wrong one. Would look ugly as heck two holes stacked on top of each other, or even connected.

3

u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 Mar 11 '26

Those are not BX-25 mags, did they send you the right one?

The genuine pinned BX-25 are also very tight with 10 rounds... sometimes I can only fit 9.

2

u/PossibleBroccoli Mar 11 '26

I’m new to guns so forgive me if this is a dumb question, but are these only pinned because they are able to go into a pistol?

Because it was my understanding that as long as a semi-auto rifle (like the ruger 10/22) is rimfire, the magazine capacity is not limited legally, and only pistol mags are capped at 10.

2

u/contact86m Mar 11 '26

...kinda. as I understand it, it's not because they can go into a pistol, it's because they're designed for a rifle and pistol. It's a really dumb nuance in the law.

Like the LAR-10 is for all intents and purposes an AR but it's classed as a pistol because of length and some other stuff. Anyway, it's allowed to have a LAR-10 purpose built magazine that hold 10 center fire (rifle) rounds because it's a pistol. And your allowed to use that 'pistol' magazine in your AR-15 even though it's designed for a different platform.

There's some other weird work arounds too, like Beretta pistol mags, it might only hold 10 rounds of .45, but it can also hold 13rds of 9mm and it fits both Berettas. So its a legal 13rd pistol mag.

Going back to the original 10/22 mag issue. Because the mag was designed for both rifle and pistol, the pistol restriction takes precedence. If the mags were purpose built for the 10/22 rifle, and happened to fit into the pistol, that would be ok though.

2

u/AssMilkerTv Mar 11 '26

So when the Ruger Charger is prohib why can’t we get our non restricted mags back @rcmp

0

u/chillyrabbit Mar 12 '26

Ruger charger isn't prohibited, and people love the LAR15 magazine loophole but hate the exact same logic being applied to the 10/22....

2

u/itsagrapefruit Mar 11 '26

Keep a riven gun in your range bag and you’ll be fine? Maybe?

Legally you could add another pin 1/8" lower than the first one, THEN remove the first one, but you can't remove the first one then install one 1/8" lower. You simply wouldn't have enough time to get the second one installed before the tactical team breached your door.

1

u/under_thecoversagent Mar 11 '26

Same thing happened to me, I just sent them back and ordered elsewhere. Much less hassle then trying to get them repinned.

1

u/AmbitiousPresence737 Mar 11 '26

If someone has old 25rnd mags is it legal to rivet themselves or should they just turn themselves in? Asking for a friend

1

u/krayzai Mar 11 '26

It’s what you get when YT ppl make things. In Asia the CNC machining is precise.

2

u/dazednewf709 Mar 12 '26

I'm pretty sure the plastic mags are just injection moulded, however I could be wrong.

0

u/Fewgel Mar 11 '26

Yes, the law has a provision for temporary creation of prohibited devices. You may create a prohibited device and possess it for up to 30 days before it must be either surrendered to the RCMP or returned to legal configuration. You cannot use, sell, or trade prohibited devices until they are returned to legal configuration.

1

u/chillyrabbit Mar 11 '26

No where does it say that.

That is highly illegal especially since C-21 specifically prohibited the creation of prohobited magazines (projobited devices)

-21

u/Psyex Mar 11 '26

Wait that is a rimfire mag isnt it? There is no limit on rimfires.

12

u/Illustrious-Nail-360 Mar 11 '26

There is on 10/22 mags because one pistol also accepts them.

2

u/JordECLIPSE Mar 11 '26

So all 10/22 mags have to be pinned?

0

u/Illustrious-Nail-360 Mar 11 '26

Yes, because of the one pistol. I feel like we should have just banned the pistol and left the mags alone, lol

5

u/IPSC_Canuck Mar 11 '26

There is a limit if the magazine was “originally designed and manufactured” for a pistol.

1

u/Psyex Mar 16 '26

But that was for a Rugar isnt it? This mag is not made by Rugar.
