Fix my gun Canuck Operator bolt head failure
Buddy brought out his Canuck Operator tonight and we ran it like we usually do. We were shooting a mix of miscellaneous ammo: target loads, 3” steel birdshot, and 2 3/4" slugs.
On the last string, we had a failure to extract. Upon inspection, the shell was expanded and stuck in the chamber, the primer was sticking out of the brass, and the bolt head basically exploded.
Never seen this happen before.

The grain structure on that bolt doesn't look good. Poor heat treatment could have contributed to the lugs shearing off.

This exactly; that grain structure is very rough, even looks like there’s a tiny void at the bottom of the first picture right side, can see it on both pieces.

Canuck is insanely overrated. I have yet to see one go without failures on the range. Either light strikes, jams, failures to feed, or just straight up breaking like this one.

That’s why I use my Canuck as a range toy and not for anything serious. I might get a real m4 one day but spending 3000$ on a gun before I have my house is insane to me

Mine has seen roughly 500 slugs and I did shoot some bird shot when I first bought it and I haven’t had any issues. I’ve seen some other knock off m4s and have yet to see one fuck up but no one at my range is really running them too hard either. I had the chance to handle and shoot an actual m4 a couple weekends ago and was surprised at how similar it felt to the Canuck. I expected it to feel more solid from how everyone talks, but either way I have yet to upgrade or really accessorize my Canuck until it has a lot more ammo through it.

I have a cunuck, so far 200 target loads with no issues, but I haven’t tried any slugs or buckshot yet. So basically so far no issues with mine but I’m sure I will have some issues sooner or later

I guess that’s fair yeah, i got the gun used in summer and only shot twice since time is genuinely not something i have whatsoever. I barely get a free day in a month. So who knows how many rounds were through it prior to me getting it, I just thought to add my two cents to the conversation

Over the years, I've seen more posts about broken turkish shotgun bolt heads on Reddit than I can count. It's a recurrent theme, it really shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

Yeah I don't see how it's worth it for some people to justify it just because "it's a range toy". Doesn't matter that's still several hundred bucks that could have gone towards something better. Now they have something that breaks

Underrated. A crappy toy the Turks made to get a quick buck is one thing, but they are definitely dangerous items when their QC is basically non-existent.

People "reviewing" their turkshit are always "yeah man I put a box of shells through my new gun and it worked FLAWLESSLY except it didn't eject half of them but it's still breaking in" then give a "long term" review that's 6 months later with a round count under 300 🙄
Reminded me of people reviewing their Dodge Calibers back in the day, "my brand new car has been perfect for the last 6000 km, great car!" lol

It's almost impossible for it to have been the ammo, it would have had to be a triple charge for it to shear off the lugs as it did. This is quite a common failure on the turkish m4 clones.
Blaming it on the ammo is just cope

The fact that the primer was sticking out kinda makes me think this might have been a double charge from faulty ammo. The only other logical thing could be a 3.5" in a 3" chamber maybe.

Even if it was a double load or 3.5" in a 3" chamber, this should not have happened. The max proof load specs are almost double the standard pressures for 3", and the pressure of a 3.5" shell does not even come close to that. If the gun was designed properly to meet SAAMI 12 gauge specs, then a double charge or 3.5" in a 3" chamber would not shear off the bolt lugs.
Blaming it on the ammo is just straight up cope, this is a common failure on turkish shotguns with this bolt design.

I'd be more inclined to blame the notoriously shoddy/nonexistent metallurgy and heat treatment in cheap Turkish shotguns

A double charge, while still possible, they would have noticed significantly increased recoil compared to other shells fired before. If there first clue was difficulty to eject and not abnormal recoil, probably not a double charge.

If the lugs failed then nothing is holding the shell to the bolt face and the primer can be pushed out.

I see there was a competition here, Turkish shot gun vs Savage mk II mag. Does the turknelli catastrophically fail before the mark 2 mag falls apart? It would seem yes

The quality of the metallurgy and materials is just not the same on cheap knockoff guns.
You can copy a successful design all you want, but if you're using sub par materials, it's just not the same.

I'd argue if you can't afford a quality shotgun like a Benelli or Beretta or even a Mossberg, you shouldn't even consider these Turkish garbage rods. Not worth the money or safety risk.

Is it possible that this shotgun headspace was way too loose? The bolt seems to have received its fair share of "primer impact", probably not the first time the primer was able to expand out a bit and you said the shell was too expanded with the primer sticking out which are usually signs of excessive headspace.. If there was too much headspace, the bolt head would receive a bigger impact on every shot that what it was supposed to be and it failed over time.

Sorry that happened to your buddy, I had a similar double loaded shell from factory blow up my 20 gauge turk semi. I should have listened to my buddies and just got it in the first place but I'm glad I just bought the 1301 mod 2 after, it's been unstoppable

Yes since they are made to saami spec and rated to handle it, and have a history of good metallurgy I'd trust to handle it

Contact Odell engineering for warranty. They will replace the bolt for free (or buy an OEM bolt from beneli).

What evidence points to the ammo? Modern quality guns are designed to handle multiple times the PSI that is seen in factory ammo.

Yeah, I was thinking the same IF mine goes.
I honestly can’t remember operator bolt heads blowing up on here in the 6 years I’ve been coming here every day, some say they have maybe I just missed the posts.
I easily have over 1000 rounds into it, definitely not 2000 though. I’m not aware of anyone dropping a benelli bolt into theirs but it might be worth a shot.

I wonder if this is thr same bolt head as on thr Canuck sentry? Or if it is an issue with all canuck shotties. Either way, hopefully it is just a 1 time failure and not a reoccurring production issue.

Yeah my M4 speed pro, runs great. Cycles light loads, the only issue was a slightly torn o ring which I replaced
