So for everyone ahead of the curve and got what they wanted before May 18 and the handgun things came up, what's next other than magazines?

There are 2 things that are set to come but we don't know exactly what they ential.

  • Magazine law changes
  • More rifles being banned

Specifically, going by Mendicino's comments that the ban will be "comprehensive" and prevent new "assault weapons" coming to market, I strongly suspect that it will be a modification to the classification system to finally define what constitutes an assault weapon in law - like a feature ban, like they have in some US states. I think it's unlikely that it will just be another list of models.

While I think this is a possibility, wouldn't that need a written change in the Firearms Act?

Yeah, he said it would come in a future amendment to the bill.

I'm sure they initially intended to table the bill with the feature ban already in place. They obviously dropped this thing half-baked to leverage Uvalde. Same reason none of the accompanying regs are available yet, I'm sure.

As much as a feature ban sucks, if it's anything like California I'll take it over ban by name. They are ugly as fuck, but they are still functionally identical.

I have two worries with what they could do. 1: They ban all semi-auto centre-fire rifles. 2: They extend the feature ban to manual action arms.

Yeah I think that's the problem. All semi auto rifles are banned or perhaps restricted goes to banned and NR goes to restricted.

As much as a feature ban sucks, if it's anything like California I'll take it over ban by name. They are ugly as fuck, but they are still functionally identical.

I'd take it too, assuming it functions like in does in California. As it is right now, our system is really inflexible and gives a lot of latitude to the RCMP, and I can see an outcome where "California-ized" rifles are still prohibited, for being variants of a prohibited assault weapon.

Like if they ban the RDB, I can see the RDB Survival, which is specifically made to be AWB-compliant, getting taken down with it for being a variant. Ironically, they'd actually be using the term correctly for once.

I don't think this will happen, but they've shown themselves willing to make big plays, either through malice or ignorance of the consequences. I'm optimistic, but concerned.

The reason this is a worry is because the LPC writes all their laws based on what Poly wants. The recent fixation on modern bolt actions by Poly is not a great sign IMO.

The thing with a potential feature ban is, IMO, that it would just be in addition to what is currently prohibited. All the name bans from the past, and then also "any centerfire, semi-auto" for example. No way in hell they'd apply a feature ban retroactively to clear some previously prohibited things.
