Fix my gun / Modding What should I do?

Post image

First shot of the day my sks did this. Anyone know what caused this and how I can fix this? Is this a gunsmith problem? I should add its stuck, I tried popping it out both with a ram rod and prying it out and its stuck pretty good

I had one that did this. I went to home depot and got the biggest dowel I could fit down there. Flipped it over and mortar'd it on the floor. Launched it out

After removing the shell, clean the chamber. More than likely you have rust in the chamber.

I second anyone recommending the wooden dowel. Do not use steel, you may damage the rifle.

+1 for wooden dowel, and a rubber mallet to hammer it in.

Yes, it may only be an SKS but there's no point risking any damage to it.

Nowadays I wouldn't say "only an SKS". theyre our prized rifles up here now and nearly $1k! They should be a national symbol of Canada!

Fellow Canadian here, the SKS holds a special place in our gun culture. Being one of the few semi auto centrefires still available that actually works.

My point was that some people were saying to shove the steel cleaning rod down the barrel. While the gun could probably take it and still be fine, it seems pointless to risk damaging it.

I haven't looked at prices recently.. I bought a French tickler earlier this year for 800 and thought that was rough. Who knew it would get so much worse?

Would brass be soft enough, im hearing some brass

A brass rod should be okay, you'd want one that was small enough that it actually fits into the case that's stuck. If it just rests on the top and you hit it, it can mushroom the top of the brass case. This would make extraction harder and increase the potential of damage.

Yes, brass, take an empty case with you, buy the largest rod that easily fits into the case mouth

Or, is the barrel threaded ?
Make a threaded adapter that connects to a grease gun and pump the bbl full of grease.

The grease idea would probably work. Making an adapter might be tricky if you don't have the tools, but it could be as easy as a fitting threaded for the barrel (no idea if barrels have a standard machine thread) and the other side threaded for a zerk. The cleanup after will be sucky though.

It definitely works, but it's usually used on stuck bullets not cases.

Use a cleaning rod. "Steel" shouldn't hurt the barrel as long as the steel isn't harder than the chrome lining, which it probably isn't.

It just ripped the rim, you can pop it out with a cleaning rod down the barrel or something. Might have pitting or corrosion in your chamber that caused the case to not want to extract dunno find out after you pop it out and inspect

I tried that, its stuck in the chamber

Quarter inch brass rod from the local home improvement store. Do not use a steel rod unless you hate your gun.

Beat the sucker out. Violence should be escalated until victory.

u/jaraxel_arabani 5d ago

After this jam he might hate that gun :-D

That brass rod is also hella useful if you get into reloading and you're also an idiot like me who sometimes forgets to add powder to a cartridge and you end up with a squib.

cough cough of course, I mean, not that I've ever... Cough cough

This

Dont be afraid to beat the fucker, use heat, oil, wax, all kinds of tricks but yeah beat its ass

3

u/vancouverpanda 5d ago

Put your cleaning rod down the barrel . Use a nail or some extension. Than beat it with a hammer , hard.

u/yukukaze233 5d ago

cleaning rod and a hammer, a big f-ing hammer

5

u/NemrahG 5d ago

Bite the back of the brass and pull it out with your teeth

Had that happen to me once with my sks. Just slammed the cleaning rod that comes with the gun down into it and it popped right out. Otherwise needle nose pliers help if you’ve got a multitool on you.

Ive done the same thing it works but you really have to give it some velocity lol.

2

u/hunterofsteelhead 5d ago

I dk where you are but I could help you if youre close by. Im just gonna do the things you've been doing but I dont give up until I get it

2

u/Scary-Detail-3206 5d ago

If you don’t have a hammer, just put the cleaning rod down the barrel and smash the rifle down on the rod. It’s a SKS, it’s meant to take some abuse

2

u/old_rug 5d ago

Cleaning rod is too short

1

u/Illustrious-Nail-360 5d ago

Put the gun muzzle up butt plate on the ground. Hold cleaning rod in the barrle and throw it down into it like you are packing a muzzle ladder but way harder. Do this a few times it may have enough mass to break it free if its not extremely stuck.

use your cleaning rod and hammer it out

2

u/JAmToas_t 5d ago

Hi - this just happened to me. Get a brass or similar cleaning rod and pop it out by putting it down the barrel.

It's jamming in there because of laquer buildup in the chamber. Get some q-tips, soak them in solvent and rub it down good. Let it sit for 10-15 then clean it up and do it again until there is no dark residue on your cleaning patches when you wipe it.

2

u/Boattailfmj 5d ago

I'd just use the cleaning rod and the muzzle protector in the prison purse cleaning kit unless you bubba'd it and they are gone

2

u/old_rug 5d ago

I have not bubbad it significantly, but the rod is too short

6

u/DougMacRay617 5d ago

Put your purse down and pull it out, some pliers would be a prime choice

my guess is the case neck expanded outwards like a mushroom lodging it in there. It has happened many times to me before, especially with some of the cheaper non norinco brand chinese ammo

Brass cased vs. cheap stuck steel cased ammo

1

u/JamieP081 5d ago

I had a russian sks that did this with brass casings, i cut the end off a cleaning rod and tapped it out with a hammer, i had to hit it pretty hard, you can also pull the bolt out if you’re worried about hurting something but its an sks, its meant to take a beating

1

u/skinnypeen762 5d ago

Drop a bras cleaning rod down the barrel and the impact should pop the case out. Use gravity

1

u/Ok_Cranberry_9794 5d ago

Chill, I had the exact same problem as you. Use rod under the barrel (that cleaning rod), let it drop freely from the muzzle a few times, or apply some force when you drop it. I managed to fix it in just a few minutes (in Crown Land), Don’t worry too much about that rod, the SKS design is very solid (besides, you can’t achieve 0.5 MOA with an SKS).

That's what you get for buying the cheapest ammo available i always get brass for my sks looks like 2025 made chinese ammo and I get moa at 50 yards

u/swift_gilford 5d ago

Wooden dowel is a good choice like others have said, but this is also another reason i carry a simple $1 paintcan opener in my kit:

1

u/horce-force 5d ago

had this same issue with both of mine.. Corrosive steel jackets get stuck when they expand and the grabber jaws just rip the edge off. Wooden dowel with barely any force was enough to dislodge, then clean thoroughly

1

u/Abioticlime 4d ago

Spray penetrating oil where the casing touches the chamber (you can also spray it down the bore to try and get it to seep in from the other end), wait a while and then retry using the cleaning rod to clear the stuck casing.

1

u/Unfair_Valuable_3816 3d ago

you will need a long sturdy rod. had this exact thing happen with red box ammo. make sure to spray your gun before shooting next time just a bit in the area that round is stuck. havent had an issue since

0

u/M4J0R3X 5d ago

stop using steel case lmao

1

u/old_rug 5d ago

But, muh cheap norinco red box...

1

u/Acceptable_Visit_115 5d ago

Funnily enough, I've had this issue happen with brass case as well.

It's usually because of a new rifle with a burred chamber causing the case to be stuck. The extractor doesn't care, it rips the rim clean off.

Grab a wood, steel or aluminum bar and slide it down the barrel and hit it with a hammer.

0

u/Vahuo89 5d ago

Mortar the crap out of it

0

u/ScotchyRocks 5d ago

Try a paint can opener.

1/4” steel rod down the barrel and hit it with a hammer.
