Application / Regulation advice SBI G3 chassis 10/22 OAL question
Hi everyone, I’m planning on a 10/22 build with the G3 chassis. I was planning on using a Neumann folding buffer to picatinny adaptor on it. But eventually I want to buy a shorter barrel around 12 inch for it. With the folding stock I’m sure it’s going to be shorter than 26 inch.
So will I have to swap the stock for a telescopic buffer type adaptor that would be min 26 while collapsed? And would that even still be legal? Considering I could remove the stock and it would still be fireable. Or does the fact the buffer tube would require tools to remove make it ok? Our laws are so vague and I don’t wanna get in any hot water over it!
Thanks guys, happy shooting

You need an 18" barrel to have a folding stock. Just go non-folding stock with 12.5", the rifle balances better and is still compact. Source: I designed it.

So the fixed buffer tube adaptor will be factored into OAL? Also I’m looking to buy the chassis from Magdump, by the looks of it it’s your direct retailer for the G3, correct? Thanks!

Yes it is, the fixed buffer tube counts towards OAL.
We own and operate MagDump

Folding stocks on the 10/22 generally need somewhere around 18 inches to remain over 26 inches folded.
For telescoping buffer stock you can go down to ~12.5". SBI actually sells a complete rifle with a buffer tube stock and a 12.5" barrel.

If you want folding stock. Your barrel needs be around 18,19 inches. I went with Volquartsen barrel and it is within the legal limit

For rimfire, as long as the OAL when *at it's shortest* is 26" or greater, you are good. Whether that is collapsing stock or folding. I've seen many builds with an 8" barrel and a collapsing stock that meet the OAL requirements when at it's shortest. For a folder you're typically looking at an 18" barrel minimum for rimfire though that does depend on the stock/chassis and the action length which is why something like the Sig Cross can have a 16" barrel with a folder and still meet OAL minimums.

So having a telescopic buffer tube stock on it would count towards the OAL? It’s just crazy because a couple hex bolts taken off would bring it back down to 26 but still fireable

Welcome to Canadian gun law, where the rules are made up and the sense don't matter. Muzzle devices also count towards OAL (but not barrel length).

another interesting one is that the tube magazine of a shotgun is the sum of all its parts; the tube, cap, spring, and follower. so you can "permanently limit" a non-limited tube by modifying the mag cap and its legal. whether you own a second, unmodified mag cap that you would never install, is irrelevant.

Yes as long as in the shortest configuration it’s 26”. If you’re short, you can add a muzzle device on rimfire and it’ll count towards OAL.

Anyone know how the chiapa bandit bootleg gets around being under 26"oal and non restricted?

It's a manual action and has no adjustable stock.

So a single shot/lever action rimfire has no minimum oal to be nr?

A manual action centerfire or semi-auto rimfire has no minimum OAL from the factory. You can't chop the gun yourself.

There is no minimum OAL for any gun that doesn't fold or telescope (or deflate, or other things in that category).
You could have a fixed stock semi-auto centerfire that comes in under 26"- so long as the barrel length is long enough.
But nobody makes a firearm like this, though. This is because 26" is a magic number in US law, so manufacturers that want their guns to sell in the US will make them no shorter (and manufacturers who want to export from the US have to jump through significantly more paperwork to export a rifle shorter than that).
(It's also because, outside of very short cartridges like 9mm or contrivances like that one Russian bullpup, you can't physically make the action that small and still work.)

The chiapa bootleg bandit has a 12" barrel and oal of under 20". Buddy got one and was very confused on how it's nr

It's not a semiauto centrefire, nor does it fold/telescope to under 26" OAL.
Sure, it's shorter than 26", but it doesn't fold or telescope.

Holy fuck b'y shit already looks fire. I know its not the answer to your post, but, heck im gonna get this for my 10/22 instead of buying an adler arms rf22

Removing the buffer tube on the rf224 is the only thing I haven’t been able to do. I tried heat but they glued the dang thing on!!! If I could go back in time I’d have never bought one lol. You can cheap out on some purchases, but a rimfire is one you should spend extra on IMHO

Thanks for actually drifting me away from that firearm. To me the ruger 10 22 has been the king when i wanna shoot 22lr and plink my boxes away, but my thirst for an ar style firearm just never seems to die at all. Id stick to the advice

Yeah the whole thought process of “I can get an almost-10/22 with a lot of extras for dirt cheap” is very tempting, I mean, if you genuinely don’t care about your gun I guess it still holds up, but if you really appreciate quality you have to get the genuine article. If your long term plan is to replace everything, just go slow with it.

It is also double or triple the price, but a custom 10/22 is much nicer than an RF-223.

If we don’t use a folding adapter or stock….. I too would like to know if you can put a 1913 adapter on a chassis, and attach a fixed length stock to that, and have this combination be considered fixed for OAL measurement

Yes. A 1913 adapter + fixed stock counts towards OAL.
You can also use a collapsible stock and that counts with the stock in the most collapsed position.

I have a similar build with folding stock, add a muzzle brake to the 16" and you should be good (measure yourself obviously)

It will be a problem with a folding stock, I went with a fixed stock because of this.
