Fix my gun Rust
Hey all!
I recently purchased a Benelli M4. I’ve had it out twice now and put maybe 250 rounds of buckshot and slugs through it as well as some target loads. I oiled it before I put it together the first time. When taking it apart now to re apply some oil, I noticed this rust here. I was just wondering if this is a problem and something can be done about it or if this is something that just happens. I am rather new to the hobby so any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

That gun is drier than week old popcorn. G96 is your friend, use it liberally.

This picture was before I took it apart to oil it lol. I was recommended G96 before so that’s what I used.

Get a decent high pressure grease, preferably with moly, and lube the action with that. It will stay put preventing rust and lubricate the action better than oil.
If you want to remove any existing rust, you can oil it and scrub it off with fine steel wool.
Whenever you're done shooting, just do a quick inspection to see if cleaning & lubrication is necessary, before putting it away

+1 for a good gun grease. Grease suspends particles where oil will hold it against the bearing surfaces, potentially causing deposits that really suck to clean. My guns are much easier to clean since the switch

literally completely normal. my brand new m4 bolt looked the exact same. upon further inspection almost every m4 bolt has that colour there. its fine. shoot and enjoy

Get some steel wool, oil it and lightly scrub the rust, very lightly. Make sure it's the finest grit steel wool.
Once done, wipe it clean with a microfibre cloth and then apply a light coat of oil on the entire gun. It'll be a perfect amount if you can touch it and it leaves a fingerprint, but not too heavy that it drips or looks soaked.
Clean and oil after each use, carbon attracts moisture. It happens!

Brass or copper wool is available. Then you don't need to worry about removing any finish.

Solid point, brass wool works great just hard to find in my area for some reason.

I wonder if you store it in the case all the time with sponge in it because sponge absorb moisture all the time. Either leave it in a safe or add some desiccant to the case will do.

Once the rust is removed, rub a light beeswax into the numbers and it’ll solve it coming back
This shit really isn’t a problem though, I wouldn’t bother fixing mine

I have a theory... all of the new firearms I have purchased with surface rust i bought in the winter or the spring. I think they are brought in from a sub zero truck and collect moisture in the warehouse causing the surface rust

Super common to see rust anywhere there’s been laser engraving. Hit it with oil and a brass brush and then just oil it regularly.
