Can you recommend a budget-friendly, high-power firearm? New or used, lever-action or bolt-action
I am looking for a reputable, new or used high-power bolt-action or lever-action firearm. The maximum price I can spend is less than $1,000. Are there any suggestions?
Yeah I’ve got 4-500 of those they do the trick can hit 1/4” thick 15” mild steel at 500 yards out of an axis and punches a perfect hole right through it still
I snagged a nice Mauser for $200 at auction, definitely an affordable gun If you can find a decent deal on surplus ammo. Hard to find lever actions that are inexpensive though, unless we're talking Turkey
Indeed. Someday one will be mine. I look at the 458 Lott ammo box in the display everytime I go into the shop. I just can’t find a reasonable priced rifle chambered in it. I miss the CZs everytime one goes on GP. For not the deer are safe, rabbits too.

makes it in the Model 70 which I see restock at Canadian retailers a couple times each year.
Savage 110s are good guns and come in a huge variety of actions and calibers and huge aftermarket support from 223 up to magnum calibers.
I have also been extremely impressed by my Stevens (owned by Savage) M334. Its one of my most accurate rifles and was only $500 new. It'll nearly put 3rd through 1 ragged hole at 100yd with good ammo. The trigger is set super heavy from the factory but can be adjusted down to around 2lb and quite nice with a bit of work (check youtube). It is excellent value for $500. They come in 30-06, 270, 243, 6.5 and 308 i believe. It outshoots some of my more expensive rifles.
The Cz600 Alpha as others have mentioned is also an excellent rifle for the price. Very accurate and surprisingly light despite the medium weight barrel. They use an aluminum action instead of steel, and lock the bolt into the steel barrel instead which is pretty unique. Excellent factory trigger too.
Might be worth checking out the Glenfield Model A too, its a Ruger American just rebranded, but still made by Ruger. Theyre around $600-$650, never handled the Glenfield but I did enjoy the 2 Ruger Americans I've owned.
Or hop on Intersurplus and pickup an old used M96 or M98 in 30 06 for super cheap too, it'll get the job done without the bells and whistles of newer models and for half the price.
You can also sometimes find Tikka T3x used or on sale for $900-$1000. They are absolutely excellent rifles as well but pushing the limit of your budget.
If it's your first centerfire rifle though Id opt for 308 or 223. Bigger calibers kick, especially in light hunting rifles, and get expensive to shoot. If I went back, my first 3 guns would be a 22lr, 12ga, and a nice 223 bolt gun to practice for cheap(ish)
Maybe you guys still have them out there in the west but over here I think they are done with them. Sks was very popular for them to sell and they usually had at least a dozen but they havent had stock in a while
That seems like the best place to buy them today. The only other options are ones with ati stocks which ive seen alot of negative comments about for 7. Russian ones for 12 and hush holster ones for 13. But off gp you might be able to get a regular chinese one for 4-600
Grab an old European bolt action. Easy to get a 3006 for 300-400. You can even get a 3006 BAR for under 1k. You can also get 30i bolt actions but they tend to be newer and more expensive.
You could probs find some kinda 30-06 or something used on gunpost for $600 or so. Not exactly “high power” but for pretty much any hunting needs it’ll do what you need it to.
As for other like high power stuff, a shotgun might fit your vibe but idk. There’s not really anything genuinely “high power” available for cheap in this country. Maybe DIY an anti tank rifle (joking)
CZ600 Alpha is worth considering. About $950, but kind of hard to find right now.
Guaranteed sub MOA performance (subject to their conditions), excellent trigger with easy adjustment.
They are extremely accurate, I got one in 7.62x39 (Alpha not the trail), and it shoots steel case red box way better than it should, somehow. Theyre also very light despite the medium profile barrel, stock is also pretty stiff for synthetic, and trigger is fantastic for a factory trigger.

So i recently got my PAL(im 26y/o) and main reason was to go deer hunting with my uncle and gramps. So i research a bit, get a tikka t3x blued in 308win( 1100including tax at basspro sale rn) . I buy a vortex crossfire scope for 329 and hit off to the range. Shit got me mortified after i fired it. High power for beginners isnt very FRIENDLY. But no recoil is scary as long you have that mental buff. Which takes time and training.
So i got right into training, got a 22lr ruger 10/22 . Comes with a scope and case at basspro for only 500 including taxes. Mind you, its set up with the bx trigger which is a 10/10. Go to the range and am starting to get more used to that boom after every shot xD.
Its also good for hunting your average squirrel/critters etc. get one!!! You can also get derya tm22 feather or rock island armory 22 for a similar price but has that really cool AR style look and aluminum body to it. Not a very practical hunting pal tho. These are all semi. Bolt action 22lrs are way more accurate.
Scared to shoot a shotgun at 12gauge rn so i wont be getting one anytime soon.
But i got a chinese chrome lined type 56 sks from gundealer ca(599 pre tax)and intend to refinish the stock to a dark red mahogany. And the sks is what every canadian MUST own. Touch the gun and youll feel something trust me.
If youre a beginner and wanna get something high powered, youre looking at a very "Unfun" range firearm but a great hunting firearm. Light hunting rifles paired with bigger calibres isnt a very good idea man.
300wsm/338wsm/7mm rem mag is a nightmare, 30-06 /308win/303british are manageable with some time and effort in the mental and physical aspects.
243win is an excellent round for whitetail but falls short for moose/elk and has very less recoil. 6.5 creedmoor is awesome too but your barrel wont last as long.
With all that being said, go through websites like g4c, truenorth,gundealer,basspro, gotenda,firearms outlet(mixed reviews) etc and do some research on your own. Because end of the day you gotta make sure whichever firearm you choose, it should be an extension of YOURSELF.

Just a heads up, my shotgun is much less recoil than my 308. Especially with birdshot and a long barrel. Like it's sks levels. Haven't ever shot slugs, but birdshot will be definitely OK for you if you get an sks.
And if you get a semi auto shotgun, I hear they have even leas recoil as the gas system soaks some up!
Definitely you should try one though!! It's a whole new sport, shooting clays. Totally different than all the target shooting I did before!
Well now youve prettt much made my wallet cry. I had a buddy buy a 12ga shotgun and shot slugs and buddy sold his gun and didnt buy any others till date. Guess birdshot is something id try before kicking ahotguns of my list
Old break actions with no recoil pad are the worst, so if you get one of those, please do grab a little slip on recoil pad or classy leather pad! But pump action ain't bad and semi is better. It's a rush when you actually hit a clay and turn it to dust!
Only other advice is dust with a nice open choke. I started with a full choke and got so mad because I missed everything....

There have been reports of bear being stopped with 22LR but I will not suggest 22LR for a bear defense (actually i will not recommend firearms as first line of defense in bear defense). So, depending upon your use case from plinking to big game hunting, you may need anything from 22LR to a 577 Nitro Express.
If you don't want to mount a scope, a cheap and reliable option is the Norinco M334.
It's a Mauser style bolt action .308 that typically sells for around 500 dollars.
It is drilled for a scope but I've read that the threads are weird so you'd probably have to retap it.
The iron sights are not dialed in when you buy it new.
I had to adjust it all the way to the right.
Having said all this, I still recommend it.
It is accurate and holds the adjusted sights well.
It always fires reliably.
It's cheap to buy.
It's easy to clean.
It uses the very common. 308 winchester.
The only thing is that you have to operate the bolt with authority.
You can't be gentle.
You must be firm every time.
If you do get caught up, just smack it with the palm of your hand.
