Buy recommendations First time gun buyer
Any recommendations for a first gun I have a budget of 1000 dollars and most likely wanting to get a rimfire I been looking at the rock armory tm22.

Want a gun that you can customize, shoots well, and will outlive you?

Want something tactical, shoots good enough, just toss on a red dot and you’re good to go?

Personally, I'd get a Ruger 10/22.
If you are not satisfied with the ergonomics, or the accuracy, or else, there is so much aftermarket support for this rifle, sky is the limit.
I had long range competition 10/22, steel challenge 10/22, small game hunting 10/22.
First thing to change form improved accuracy is the barrel ( I love Kidd barrels. Ultra lightweight or match bull barrel depending on needs)
You can basically change every parts untill you have only the receiver as ruger part or even buy a aftermarket receiver. (Love dlask arms tuf-22 receivers)
It is a tried and proven rifle.
OR
CZ457 for out of the box great bolt action rifle.

10/22 has great after market support so you can upgrade down the road. Much better build quality than other rimfire options.
Ammo is cheap plus you'll have some leftover for an optic plus PPE.
I can't emphasize how much you shouldn't skimp on PPE (eyes and ears).

Savage Mark II, fun bolt action, fun if you get into small game hunting as well and can mess around with it for long range! MDT makes a chassi for it

If you've shot guns before and are familiar with taking them apart I would for sure go for the TM22 or a 10/22.
I have a TM22 and while the gun is fun to shoot the ergonomics of the gun are lacking. It's not a comfortable gun to shoot.
If you're new to the gun scene I would buy a bolt action gun. They are simple, more accurate, easy to maintain and a great way to build your fundamentals.
If I had to choose for my first gun I would go for a bolt action that comes with a scope.

Hey! I got my PAL in December.
I did a deep dive to figure out exactly what rifle I wanted. (Now it does depend on your goal)
What I figured, I wanted to get a rifle that was accurate enough that if I miss at 50y or even 100y, I know it is my fault.
I went with the CZ457 in 22LR. Specifically I went with the Lux.
When you look at the performance of a CZ457 vs a Ruger 10/22 (probably one of the more accurate semi-auto 22lrs), it's night and day.
Distance
Stock Ruger 10/22 (Carbine)
Stock CZ 457 (American/Varmint)
25 Yards
0.35" – 0.60" (~1.3–2.3 MOA)
0.15" – 0.25" (~0.6–1.0 MOA)
50 Yards
0.75" – 1.25" (~1.5–2.5 MOA)
0.35" – 0.60" (~0.7–1.1 MOA)
100 Yards
2.00" – 3.50" (~2.0–3.5 MOA)
0.80" – 1.50" (~0.8–1.5 MOA)
So to me, when I am practicing for hunting big game and I decide to shoot the cz out to 100 yards (equivalent to shooting a 270 to 400). If I use the cz, I know that if i'm not hitting, I'm doing something wrong.
You can get a 10/22 to shoot as well as a stock cz, but you'll spend 2x the price of the cz to really get it there.
IMO: CZ has got to be one of the best value purchases I've ever made. One of the best rim fires on the market, competes with 22s in higher price brakets, and retains it's value incredibly well. Only drawback I will mention is that it is recommended to get a specific boreguide. Not difficult, just an expense to be aware of.
(I still want to mod the hell out of a 10/22 cause I think it would be fun)

Savage MK II FV and drop it in an MDT Field Stock.
Its more accurate than the Ruger 10/22. Plus it provides a good platform for practicing the fundamentals.

You won't outgrow either
The CZ you can run in PRs and likely ban safe. The ruger, infinitely upgradeable. Rock solid reliable.
After that decide what you want to do. If just fun. Grab a pump shotgun. Maverick 88, Nova, 590. Super fun. Super reliable. Lots of upgrades.

CZ 600 alpha in 7.62x39.
CZ .22LR you can never go wrong with.
Have had excellent results with my savage 22 aswell. You could get a whole bolt action setup with a decent optic in and stay under 1k. I would suggest going bolt before auto loading.

With a budget like that sks, or a 10/22 . You could buy a bare bones 10/22 and go crazy with the left over money on aftermarket parts

I've looked at these before, but I'm always a bit hesitant because of the 30MOA rail. Wouldn't that limit you if you had something like a Leupold rimfire with its 60MOA range if you were trying to zero to 25m or maybe even 50m?

You aren't limited to a rimfire scope. You don't even need an expensive scope to solve your problem. An arken will do.

Get a Ruger 10/22, followed by a SKS and a Mossberg 500.

I recommend buying a Ruger 10/22. You can build an AR-15 by swapping out the shell and adding a red dot reflex, if that’s your goal. Buying a Ruger ensures reliability. If you’re planning an AR-15-style build, simply purchase the cheapest Ruger 10/22 and make your swaps from there.

With that sort of budget I’d grab a 10/22 and a cheap centrefire like an axis in 223.

Depends on your use for them. Just plinking then I'd recommend a TM22, 10/22 or winchester wildcat. Then I'd get some sort of mossberg. Maverick or if you want to spend a little more then a 590 or 930

Most for your money is used at 1000, if looks are your thing the answers will be something else but for modifiable, reliability, accuracy there are well known winners. Maybe you prefer semi, bolt action or single shot (little badger 22wmr)).
If you want it to go furthest 1k used could get you a savage and a decent used 12g maybe even a decent semi 12g. Everyone will warn you away from Turkish cheap shotties tho.

regardless of what gun you buy, you need to keep in mind that that $1000 also need to pay for ammo, cleaning kit, lock, safe (maybe), case (bag type is fine) and a gun club membership (1 year).
also maybe hearing/eye protection lol

Get the tm22 a decent red dot or scope and some ammo, that’ll keep you under $1k. Everyone telling you to buy a 10/22 has 10/22’s that cost 3k.
