they literally ruined my hometown - I can't afford to retire there anymore. When I left in 2010, the median house price for a real nice house was about 180K, its now 450K for the SAME HOUSE - I've checked historical data on houses, and its mind blowing

Yeah same for my home town in NB. I literally just flew back from my yearly visit and me and the wife would love to get a home there but with slim pickings for jobs and the post covid housing market its made it impossible. And we are a six figure earners in Alberta.

I can't speak for NB but I live in PEI, wife works for the province and Im a red seal tradesman, both easily attainable and secure jobs. Our household income is around $180k gross which is pretty good for the maritimes.

ELI5 - you own a house, with a partner and children. You think smelling lavender is incredible, and you want other people to smell it. So you tell everyone in your house that anyone can burn a lavender candle any time they want. One of your children doesn't like lavender, so they tell everyone else in the house that they don't want people burning a lavender candle in their room.

That's a really simplified relationship of feds to provinces. The Fed's own the house, and make the rules. But the feds allow the provinces to make their own rules (within reason). While the land is technically owned by the federal government, it's still in a province, and can further be downloaded to a municipality. Which can make their own laws, even if the province and feds says you can do the thing.

Yeah I don't have a problem with Liberal provinces like NS making (imo) bullshit rules because provincial rights all the way. We should have more of that, in fact - let the Prairies have NR AR-15s while Quebec bans double barrel assault shotguns.

The 13 Sundays that fall in the rifle deer season. It's not just deer too. Grouse, rabbits, etc.

Anything you have a licence for.

That came in due to religious reasons, but they've since kept it to reduce stress on wild game as the Prairie WMUs get hunted hard compared to the forested areas.

Really ignorant here. But I bikepaced the length of NS last summer during the drought. And apparently the week before I got there you weren't even allowed in the woods due to possibility of a 4x4 sparking a wildfire. Is it a fire thing too?

Last summer it was so dry they banned you from going into the forest, on both crown land AND private land that you didn’t own. $25,000 fine PLUS taxes on the fine. I worked forestry and my boss lied to us about our permits and we ended up working ‘illegally’ for a week before we found out.

Ish... that's sketchy. Yeah it was really good timing as I stealth camped most the time so had I been there a week ealier it would of cost me a lot of hotels. Also having the provincial parks open was nice. Not important... but I went to one Caribou/Munroes Island Provincial Park, it was low season, show up late, only two staff there. They were legit the nicest people and I have thought about them once a month at least since. I get nostalgic just thinking about them. Wish I could remember their names to send their managers an email. All to say east coasters are great.

Oh that’s neat, I was around Caribou Island scrounging up European green crabs not too long ago. Lots of them in the estuaries by the roads.

I never even realized they had people actively working at that park, though I think it was October when I went to the actual park part.

Atleast for NS sake there is public "ranges" you can book time at, but i hear it can be quite restrictive. In NL you can apply for a temporary sight-in permit on crown or you have to go to a range. No idea about NB/PEI

Yeah they are super picky. The closest one to me only has room for 1 person to shoot, and no semi auto firing is allowed. Theres a sign that says you have to wait however many seconds between follow up shots, super weird.

Those ranges are literally only for sighting in scopes, not leisure shooting.

Technically you can't discharge a firearm outside of hunting season in Nova Scotia anywhere other than an approved range, even on private land. In practice people do it all the time in the country

You can apply for a Nuisance Wildlife Operator license but if you live somewhere where you need varmint control you likely won't have neighbours who care

You can hunt on crown land during hunting season. You can't discharge firearms on crown land outside of a season you have a valid tag for.

The reasoning is poaching. It used to be really bad decades ago. Now no one hunts and the woods are lousy with deer (and ticks) 🤷‍♂️

You can’t shoot a gun unless you are about to take a shot at an animal, only during hunting season. If you want to sight in or test a rifle you need to book a range. Even if you’re hunting with no luck and decide to plink some tin cans, that’s a CRIME.

Loi 9, NR registry, FQTIR is the fuddiest of them all, home of poly, ZEC, shooting on crownland other than hunting is illegal, most people living here would fall deep on the Liberal side if the Bloc and our separate culture wasnt a thing and to top it all of its french.

Hell Ontario allow you to own restricted without range membership which is a pretty neat thing to do.

BC is super liberal, but is one of the premier hunting destinations on the entire planet and has a long running history of hunters / First Nations alike harvesting their own meat. The CFO’s and RCMP understand that, it’s not their choice to ban guns but they have the power to help the people acquire what toys they want. Truly they’re probably just saving face not mentioning the buy back and the blowback they would get from Vancouver, but don’t forget cities like Prince George exist.

I’ve lived in BC for almost my whole life sans 4 months in Onterrible.

I’ve lived in the lower mainland, the Kootenays, and the eastern Fraser Valley.

There’s a little bit of something for everyone. Which is nice. The weather is generally mild but rainy. However the cost of living makes it tough.

I’d say the Vancouver area is mostly full of neoliberal WASPS (regardless of actual ethnicity) with a sprinkling of progressives et al. There’s a few ranges in the outskirts but last time I checked membership was hard to get.

The Fraser valley leans more conservative WASP and has the collective IQ to go with it. Expect idiots blowing past you on the highway at 130 in their lifted Duallys and soccer moms in their Cadillac/Ford/Chevy SUVs tailgating you. I’ve been rear ended twice living here. Lots of forest service roads littered with beer cans and shot out mile markers.

In the interior you get the sprinkling of what you actually mentioned. If you’re not an ivermectin soaked chud you’re a hippie, no in between.

Generally for shooting sports I’d say the further east the easier it gets to get a reasonably priced range membership and to find good crown land to shoot safely on. The Fraser valley has spots in that are legal, but I’ve yet to find a longer ranged spot with an actual backstop.

I hate the fact that I can't buy any new handguns. Sure, I don't have a lot of money to do so. But if I had money I would love the option to.

I haven't tried going through the exemption process to buy a pistol and honestly I probably can't (because I already own a "target pistol"). But I'd half expect that our CFO would be like "No, not allowed" anyway.

that was the neat thing about them pre 2022, they were cheap compared to non-restricteds. supply was pretty good and demand was never all that high so you could get some really nice ones cheap on the second hand market. still regret passing up a USP for 600 bucks

I live in westman and my hunting spot takes less than 15 mins to get to, it’s awesome. I also have a place to shoot over 1400m at and BWA for my handguns. All within 20 minutes max. It’s awesome

In BC it is illegal to hunt Grizzly Bears (since 2017) unless you’re Aboriginal (not even Metis are qualified).

Hope that is repealed when the BC Conservatives finally remove the NDP from power.

You can. I just looked it up today. The only other way is "legitimate need" for wildlife protection/humane dispatch, I.E, Trapper, prospector, resource extraction,research and other remote jobs. All of which you need to prove with extreme detail, paperwork and documentation/licensing. It's a process.
