Feets / Collection / My build HK-93 Sporting/Utility Rifle
New (to me) is this OIC 12(5) HK-93 5.56mm/.223 cal Sporting/Utility Rifle, purchased through Switzer's April 2026 Auction. It accepts proprietary 25, 30 and 40-round 5.56mm magazines, the latter being aluminum manufacture for light weight. Note the original South African ARMSON-brand Occluded-Eye Gunsight (OEG) in the 2nd photo, which was effectively the world's first mass-produced "red dot" sight in which one eye sees the dot on a black background and the other eye sees the target and surrounding terrain, over which the red dot appears. It takes some practice, but works quite well with some basic familiarity.

Unfortunately, I have no feet to show. Lost both legs above the knee to a Taliban IED back in 2008. Nowadays I am wheelchair-bound.

That's rough man, sure sounds like you're enjoying life still though. Thanks for your service, and I'm glad to see someone in canada still gets to own these. Im glad it's one of our vets too.
Reliable gun I think it was, or maybe the gun dealer out east had an awesome deal on an FAL, $800. I think it's still up for sale under their prohibited section.Ā
If you buy a prohibited and have the licensing, can you still ship it like any other firearm? Or does it have to be picked up in person?

Thank you so much for your sacrifice man.. I have no words. I wish we could show our appreciation to the vets in more than just words but I am so thankful for you people that gave up a lot just for us.

Beautiful rifle. You are very lucky to be grandfathered for 12(5).

u/Possible_Thing_9385 Jun 18 '26
Luck? Not really. I saw what was coming and ensured that I had as wide a variety of military and military-style firearms las I could afford so that I would be grandfathered. That was planning. Determination and resilience came into play in keeping at least one firearm in each OIC 12(x) category registered to my name despite their safe-queen status for the past 23 years. Maintaining my Grandfathered status in every OIC 12(X) category (less 12(2) Full-Automatic - I was too young in 1978), has allowed me to expand my personal collection into a fairly thorough reference library of the major Post-WW2 military "Cold War" Rifle, SMG and Handgun designs.

I had the opportunity to meet John hipwell from Wolverine supply and look through his personal collection many years ago. What an experience that was

John and I are quite good friends, dating back to gun shows where he displayed tables in the late 1980s. I have purchased quite a few of the firearms pictured from either John's personal collection or as consignment pieces through Wolverine. Many good memories of hunting on John's land, BBQs, the Machinegun 1998 event, competition shoots, etc. To say that John is a good man is to make a vast understatement. He is salt of the earth.

Thatās what I got from him too. Wish there was more men like him around.

2 weeks before the 12.5 ban it was between a Colt XM177 or an HK93 Sporter.
I chose poorly...

Yup. That was her!
Only problem is is that I didn't know what I had and proceeded to mill off the hand guard and remove the flashhider to "update" the rifle to early M4 configuration. Doh!
I wish I had internet in the mid 90's. I'm sure someone (not my gunsmith) would have told me I'm an idiot.
Edit: My poor choice back then kept me out of the 12.5 fan boi club...

u/Possible_Thing_9385 Jun 18 '26
Not really. Been down THAT road before though, showing most of my collection on here. Equal amounts of hate and appreciation.... a mixed bag of a reaction. Reddit is a strange place....

How do you own this stuff? How did you get your 12(5) license??
3
u/Alternative_Two475 Jun 18 '26
I have continuously owned at least one firearm in each Grandfathered 12(x) category for the past 23 years, thus maintaining my Grandfathered status for all but the full-automatics. I missed out on 12(2) in 1978 due to insufficient age. I have 12(3), (4), (5) and (6).

Just sharing some recent acquisitions on an otherwise boring Thursday morning. No jealousy intended.

u/Armedfist Jun 18 '26
So lost so much since c68 and the oic banā¦.
2
u/Possible_Thing_9385 Jun 18 '26
Yes, we certainly have, going right back to 1978 when the full-autos were first grandfathered.

u/DougMacRay617 Jun 18 '26
Is this a dewatt?
29
u/hockeyfanatic777 Jun 18 '26
Looks like OP actually got this in the August ā25 auction, must have their 12.5 license so itās not a dewatt. Colour me insanely jealous lol
3
u/Possible_Thing_9385 Jun 18 '26
Nope, it was the Feb 26 Switzer's Auction.
1
u/hockeyfanatic777 Jun 18 '26
Sorry I donāt mean to be argumentative, I was just curious so I checked the past few auctions. The AK you posted was in Feb, but there were no HK93s in the Feb or April auction, just in the August ā25
1
u/Possible_Thing_9385 Jun 18 '26
You are correct! My apologies for the confusion.
1
u/hockeyfanatic777 Jun 18 '26
No worries! I didnāt want to be a dick or anything. One commenter asked if it was a dewatt so I just searched previous Switzers auctions (I also dabble in those auctions) to see if it was a dewatt or a 12.X transfer.
Iām just one jealous mother Fāer, I wish I couldāve gotten a 12.X license. I love to collect.
