Remember: You don't have to be on an Olympic team. Just be practicing a discipline recognized by the Olympics, even if that is just a once a week casual bullseye shoot.

Do you have to submit your scores? Like how does that work, a coach has to watch you shoot once in awhile?

You fill out a form and get the letter. Do it through a provincial association.

Seems to be the process I was told about. ONTarget provincial pistol association runs the sanctioned events at the club I shoot at.

Yes, it does seem like there is a Catch-22 - need a pistol to shoot, need to shoot to get the exemption?

Wrong. I was rejected by the provincial body and then joined the SFC and they walked me through the process.

Can you bring it to the woods under a prospectors license? I really want a high caliber handgun for bear defense as a geologist.

Figured it was a loophole. If my work would actually sign off on it I could likely get an exemption but they said no way when I asked years ago. I just pack my shorty 12ga when I need to, boss knows but says it’s unofficially allowed so just keep my mouth shut.

What is this exemption you were speaking. Only security and guards as far as I know can get exemptions for carrying with companies

Forestry and guiding you can get it in northern Alberta and BC. I know of a few who have had it for years. If I was still a mill forester I could probably get mine where I use to work. I know 2 guides/outfitters who have theirs as well. Had them for years but had to submit the exception when things changed

Not sure about keeping the exemption, I haven't gotten that far.

I know the path now, it was explained to me by several club members, I just need to find a loaner handgun for the initial shoot.

I was told by a club here that getting into airgun shooting is a foot in the door towards a handgun exemption.

The other guy is wrong, again. I Purchased an air pistol and practiced and documented my training sessions, submitted them to the sfc and they helped me get an exemption letter.

.32 used to be used in the Olympics but is no longer. Though .32 is still used by the ISSF.

The problem is that 32 has been on the prohib list for a long time so it's difficult to get into shooting that calibre. You essentially are limited to applying for permission to buy a 22LR pistol.

32 S&W olympic pistols are excluded from the prohibited list,
but it's going to cost a boatload of money

A Walther GSP with both 22 LR and 32 S&W uppers will cost in the neighbourhood of $6k

Interesting, how did that work? IPSC was specifically excluded by the Federal Government as an exemption granting body?

Also, I think exemption is only for .22LR, not exactly an IPSC caliber?

Haven't had time to watch yet, is P3 loaning guns or are they hosting Olympic matches so people get exception letters?

Commercial loaning. They're one of 4 companies in AB set up for it right now (I think Phoenix and Straight Shooters are also setup but they're doing it as at-range only).

You need: RPAL, shooting range membership, Black Badge (can take after getting your handgun)

So it’s down to the provincial CFO to be willing to grant exemptions? Why wouldn’t Ontario do the same? I legit want to get into IPSC and IDPA as badly as I do Olympic pistol disciplines

Can you actually get this exemption if you don't already own a handgun? Because how else can you compete in a shooting competition with a handgun now if you don't already have one?

Or can it be any kind of Olympic-style shooting competition just to prove that you do compete? I do a lot of clay shooting any my club holds skeet competitions, so this is potentially one avenue for me.

My only question is where and how to join one of the sessions or competitions? I don't think my range (Silverdale, Southern Ontario) does bullseye tournaments

So with more and more people getting exemptions. Is there any club/ranges that are holding practices for one of the disciplines in Southern Ontario? Would love to be able to get an exemption for a mk4 lite. I've looked at their website that is pretty bare bone trying to learn things

It depends upon the province. In Ontario, they want either published scores in an ISSF event (Sport, Standard, Rapidfire, Centrefire, or even Air Pistol) or being coached by a NCCP/SFC accredited coach.
