Milsurps / Prohib Looking for advice from milsurp guys
A local pawn shop has a heavily sporterized Kar 98 for 575$ and I've wanted a Kar 98 my whole life but even sporterized I never find them and when I do find complete original ones they're like 2k$ not talking about other variants but German made ww2 Mausers do you guys think that's a fair price?

Prices on surplus are higher then before yes, but the trend wont change and in few year today’s prices are cheap. I’ve seen sks go from $99 to now $925 retail, all the pissing and moaning never changes the fact that’s what they sell for. I would recommend saving for the rifle you want.

This is not a military one. I wouldnt spent money on it. If you want a cheap milsurp mauser look for an israeli one or a russian capture. 1000$-1200$ and they will retain value.

If you can settle with a Swedish Mauser, which is essentially the same thing with a even better caliber, accurate as a laser beam. You can find a lot of great deals in Canada . Kar98 is overrated and overpriced

We're not buying them because of their capabilities. At least I didn't. I did check out the Swedish ones though, before I picked up a capture one.
Maybe a Swedish one will make its way into the arsenal one day.

I personally have a preference for Kar98 too but I won’t pay premium unless it’s in great condition. It needs to be a investment.
Swedish Mauser won’t disappoint you. It’s German engineering with great Swedish steel, the great marriage

Maybe there weren't as many notable uses of the Swedish Mauser in battle hence why the demand isn't on the same level as the German ones

No, but it is what it is. Don't waste your money on the Sportize one.

You could either do as others have suggested, save some money and then buy the real deal or you could get a Yugoslavian M48 while you try saving some money, shoot it, sell it and use the money together with what you might have saved it to buy a a German Mauser. M48s are kind of cool too and they have seen wars, if the historical part is what interests you. VZ24s are also some pretty good Mausers.

Pawn shops stocked guns?
They run background checks and all that before selling, too, I hope?

Super common especially in the USA for pawn shops to stock firearms they check your pal and ID they do the transfer numbers just like any other gun shop

I get the appeal if you didnt care its a sporter but if you want a K98k they are out there for ok prices you just need to save a little. Plus there are Czech made ones, love the Swede Mausers in 6.5x55
This kind of sporter would need alot of work if you wanted it back to military configuration which will cost you alot more than just finding one

If you’re worried about what people will think of you for buying a sporter/bubba Kar98, you’re buying it for the wrong reasons.
Would owning that, caring for it, shooting it, make you happy? Can you afford the price tag, can you feed her?
Those are the only real questions. Make yourself happy, while not being financially irresponsible. Live your best life.

If you want a K98 so badly I'd recommend just getting a Russian Capture one. They're mismatching but still good shooters for the most part. Prices on all milsurp have risen so I'd expect $900-1200 for one of those. I'm sure there is outliers, but keep an eye on Gunpost and auctions if you're serious.
I would not get a sporterised Mauser if I wanted a K98 specifically; it's the historical value that would be more important there. The one you have pictured doesn't even appear to be a wartime piece.

2k is more than a fair price for an original. If original ww2 matching k98's were 2k I'd buy as many as I could get my hands on.
sporters I think 575 is fair but I'm less into sporters so I can't say. 4-500 seems reasonable to me so you could probably do a little better but it's not going to be that different. There's a lot less demand for those.
