News / Politics / Activism Anyone writing to their Premiere?
The CCFR suggested people write to their Premiere to speak out against the gun grab and to encourage them to do what Manitoba has done.
CCFR has templates for email or snail mail letter. I thought a snail mail letter may be taken more seriously by the Premiere’s office since letters take more effort than an email.
But the template letter they posted follows the typical written letter format. ie your name and address listed at the top of the page.
As soon as I saw that, it made me not want to write a letter for fear that anyone who speaks against the gun grab and puts their name and address to it, can be used to create an unofficial registry.
Does anyone else have similar concerns? I feel slightly paranoid about this but then again, how can one not be paranoid when you look at the way the govt has treated its citizens.
I’m considering sending a letter but not including my address and possibly using a pseudonym. There’s a chance they won’t take it seriously without name and address but that’s beyond my control. All I can do is write a letter or not.
Interested in others’ opinions.

I’ve emailed their office and my MMP. They assured me that they take my concerns seriously but being in Ontario I know Ford won’t do anything.

My premier is already against, I wrote my mp a few times but she is a liberal and hasn’t responded and even if she did I’m sure it’d be some absolute and utter bs

u/Spider-King-270 Mar 23 '26
Send it anyways
11
u/-rifle-is-fine- Mar 23 '26
And save the draft to send every week.
And send to all candidates at election time.
I also add to mine "I do not consider voting for someone to be my voice (both MLA and MP) when they do not take the time to engage me."

u/rastamasta45 Mar 23 '26
I had a liberal mp and wrote to them, it’s unreal how they basically reply “you’re wrong and this will be better for you, thanks”
They’re not interested in listening, they have their marching orders.

In reality your concern is that the government will introduce a registry of people that oppose their ideas lol I think you're fine to use your name and address.
Just state your opposition to the buyback and leave out any details about your stuff. Plenty of people without guns are opposed to this as well.

No not that it’s a registry of people who oppose. It’ll be a registry of people who own guns. Govt knows who the PAL holders are but not all PAL holders own firearms.

Writing to David Eby might as well be as effective as screaming into the void or talking to a wall.
I did write my federal MP though, but she's a Conservative so she's already been outspoken against the gun grab anyway.

This exactly and the greens are against guns BUT more so against the gun grab and the OIC which was abused.

I have emailed my Premier several times, no response yet. I'm not worried about being put on a list.
If it comes down to it I will deactivate anything prohibited that I might have on the very last day of the amnesty and hang it on my wall.
I'm not interested in pumping up their confiscation numbers. I bought it I'm keeping it. If the only legal way for me to keep it is to weld it shut then so be it. I see no reason to give them any sort of respectable number of confiscated firearms. Hopefully one day there will be an inquiry into how much money was wasted on this program and how ineffective it was.
Chop it up and throw it in the trash if you have to.

It is sad to see how many people in this sub have such a poor attitude when it comes to reaching out to policy makers.
"I don't think my letter/email will do anything so I'm going to do fuck all and complain I didn't get my way."
Doing nothing is part of the problem. Don't be part of the problem. Be vocal.
My premier has my back and I'm still going to reach out to my MLA to say I'm supportive of the initiatives.
Do something!
And the idea of creating a registry is paranoia.

u/prosper_0 Mar 23 '26
yeah! Spend 5 fucking minutes to send a damned note. Or shut the hell up and hand your guns in. I mean, if you can't be arsed to do even a minimal token effort, then you're CHOOSING to be completely useless.
3
u/-rifle-is-fine- Mar 23 '26
You only need to think up a letter once. Then you only need to change names and addresses you send it to.
Easy-fuckin'-peasy!
1
u/AgreeablePanda9805 Mar 24 '26
Do you attach your name and address to the letter? Or do it by email and not include your name?
1
u/-rifle-is-fine- Mar 24 '26
I sure do. There is no reason not to do so.
A non-gun owner can (and should if they have the beliefs) protest too.

u/myISPsuck Mar 23 '26
Nathalie Provost is my MP so in my case it truly does apply
9
u/-rifle-is-fine- Mar 23 '26
Even more reason for you to write. Tell her to put her personal views aside and do her job as your voice in Ottawa.
3
u/prosper_0 Mar 23 '26
oh, so, throw your hands up an give in? Write a damn letter, and let the chips fall where they may. Have you done anything?
If every single gun owner in her area sent her a note, it would have an impact. Especially if you CC your MLA, premier, and other MP's/ministers. Enough letters might not change her mind, but they could very well erode support for her.
Stop making excuses for not doing anything. Don't be useless.
2
u/myISPsuck Mar 23 '26
There is no voting, writing, or complaining our way out of this.
1
u/prosper_0 Mar 23 '26
oh, ok then. Then I guess just give up without even spending a few damned minutes to complain to those who might actually be able to influence things. Just whinge on reddit and accept your fate without even doing the least you could do.

Well the paranoia may seem silly but look what the govt did with the list of donors to the trucker convoy. One side of me thinks I should write the letter but the other side of me thinks I’d be dumb to ignore the evidence of how far the govt has gone before.

The office of the premiers are full of interns and assistants, they have too much on their plates to add names to some database. Plus they're provincial, so not like they'd even have access to adding peoples names to databases.
If you wanna be discrete, say something like: Name + initial, and province or city.
Ex:
John S. / Robert K. / Gilbert R.
-Concerned Nova Scotian/Manitoban/Saskatchewanian, etc.

In Manitoba the Premiere has come out against it but the useless Mayor Scott Gillingham voted in favour of the police to enforce it.
4
u/prosper_0 Mar 23 '26
What did Manitoba do? I wrote mine encouraging them to follow Saskatchewan's recent actions.

u/Fit_Fuel_6515 Mar 23 '26
Wab Kinew said he's against it. He has a PAL himself and is an avid hunter according to some interviews from years ago.
CBC:
"The minister said the government will always respect law-abiding firearm owners, pointing out that Premier Wab Kinew is a gun owner.
The Manitoba Wildlife Federation said in a statement it welcomed Manitoba's opposition to the initiative, saying there is "nearly unanimous consensus" it's costly and ineffective while failing to improve public safety."
2
u/prosper_0 Mar 23 '26
oh, so he said some things. Got it. Still prefer AB and SK's approach of actually doing some things instead of just words.
5
u/outline8668 Mar 23 '26
As a Manitoban, it's still better than nothing. I would have loved to have seen them take a page from Alberta & Sask's playbook however.

u/EQ1_Deladar Mar 23 '26
He's a firearms owner when it's convenient for him, like vote hunting at an urban riding.
He's not when it comes to anything that could cause potential political difficultly for him, like enacting a copy-paste of Sask's legislation.
He's the most popular provincial Premier in Canada, has a strong majority, and his largest competition is the absolute shit-show of an opposition party.
His party's inaction on passing anti-buyback legislation speaks volumes on how much he actually gives a crap about Manitoba's legal firearm owners.
5
u/RDasher3333 Mar 23 '26
The provincial government has nothing to do with the gun grab and they have no reason to have a list of people writing to them. Many people write to public offices and CFOs and they’ve never been bothered
3
u/Spider-King-270 Mar 23 '26
It’s more to do what Saskatchewan has done which is throw a massive wrench in the buyback by giving citizens exemption certificates and forcing the Feds to pump more money into a failed program that is already facing budget cuts
2
u/__phil1001__ Mar 23 '26
But you still can't use the prohibited firearms. So we still lose.
3
u/prosper_0 Mar 23 '26
It's at least something. Better than just whining, or making statements. Their power is somewhat limited in what they can accomplish, but I give them props for actually finding things they can do.
If we just do nothing and sit around, rejecting even the smallest actions because they're not a 'perfect' solution, then we are all going to get screwed. But if enough provinces throw up enough little roadblocks.... well, little things add up.
If all they do is chest beating and hot air, then nothing's going to change. Stop tent pissing about steps in the right direction.

u/MajorCocknBalls Mar 23 '26
Wrote to Wab Kinew, my City Councillor, Mayor, and Police Board. The only one that I wasn't pleased with the response from was the Police Board but I live in Winnipeg so they were obviously going to be pro ban.

u/rastamasta45 Mar 23 '26
I’ve written to my Ontario premier and the solicitor general. Going to write them again asap
2
Mar 23 '26
I wrote to Marc Carney as he's my MP, I wrote to Gary, Provost and about 3-4 other MP's....
Showed them irrefutable statistics that they are wrong and lie.
Not 1 single response from any.

u/_MlCE_ Mar 23 '26
I wrote to my Nova Scotia MLA and CC'd the Premier.
They said they dont support, but also said it is a Federal issue and they have no control. Basically no real steps unlike Alberta or Saskatchewan.
On the other hand, my city is supporting the confiscation...

I hear your concern. I’ve sent similar things with a fake name and picked a random address in my neighborhood as a return address.
1
u/EQ1_Deladar Mar 23 '26
Did you mean Saskatchewan (or Alberta)?
All Manitoba did was write a letter stating that if the Feds covered the costs they would be more likely to participate? They didn't even cancel the WPS deal...
I wrote my MB MLA, the MB Justice Minister and Premier Kinew asking them to copy/paste Sask or AB's legislation.
The MLA didn't get back to me which wasn't a surprise given her demographic. The Justice Minister and Kinew responded with similar form letters that roughly translates to "We're not participating because the Liberals simply are not paying us enough. We don't really care enough about Manitoba legal firearms owners to actually do anything legally that could potentially impede the buyback or protect owners from losing their property or being charged with a crime."

u/Familiar-Appeal6384 Mar 23 '26
No. I don't have to. He knows where I stand. But I will tell Scott Moe that he's doing a good job next time I see him. Which is good because I need to complain about something else and it's better to lead with praise. I've known him for years. It's pretty easy to be on a first name basis with most of the politicians that you need to talk to.
2
u/hitmanhux Mar 25 '26
I'd just write "anonymous concerned citizen" at the top.
They'll never actually read it anyway but it's good to add another letter to the pile.

u/__phil1001__ Mar 23 '26
My premiere is Eby, I think that sums it up. Not a single reply from this waste of space. Even the other parties reply to emails.
1
u/Metalock Mar 23 '26
The NDP (both BCNDP and federal, which are the same anyway) is literally the only party that has never responded to any of my e-mails (for any issue/question, not just firearms).
Conservatives? Yep
Liberals? Yep
Greens? Yep
People's Party? Yep
NDP? Radio silence.
2
u/__phil1001__ Mar 24 '26
Greens actually responded to me saying while they are anti firearms, they do not support OIC and how this ban happened. They sadly went downhill after this by saying firearms are the major cause of injury and death in domestic disputes. I would love to know where they got this inaccuracy from.
1
u/GFN_good_for_nothing Mar 23 '26
Already done, actually heard back from their office too! They forwarded my email to a few others as well, not sure how much good it’ll do but I figured it was better than just complaining on social media, which I know from experience does nothing.

I live in Ontario. My premiere can't read.
