Buy recommendations With the coming supreme court decision, I'm thinking about pistols.
Years ago, my license was up for renewal. While waiting for my renewal, my license expired. It only took 9 months, lol.
Unfortunately during that time, the OIC happened, and I missed out on all the cool pistol sales.
What with not being able to buy anything since then, I haven't really given attention to the world of new things. I understand we're on the glock Gen 6 now? Used to have a Gen 4. Loved it.
Maybe the supreme court bails us out, all this nonsense goes away and we can go shopping again. So what's new in the world of pistol? I have hope that sometime soon I'll be able to buy something, what should I be putting money aside for?
Anything a with a 10 or less capacity, I hate knowing I'm wasting space with pinned mags.

If anything happens, I'll be buying the tiger striped gold desert eagle 50AE I talked myself out of in like 2016.
But noooooo I had to be "responsible"

Mar 23 '26
I'll be in line behind you getting 2.
15
u/spicymeatmemes Mar 23 '26
They were just over $3k back then I'm pretty sure. That was also when the sks was like $250-$300.
I couldn't imagine the post-ban-pandemic-tariff-global war prices.

Mar 23 '26
That's fine, I'm picking up a Benelli M4 this year so what's another 3k gun lol

be sure to add lube to the argo pistons when you get it. sometimes theyre dry out of the box and won't be self cleaning if they're dry

u/No_Win_9797 Mar 23 '26
I also talked myself out of a stainless ported DE, and regret it Although the amount of 9mm I go through, I’d be eating out of a dumpster can to feed myself after feeding the DE

u/swift_gilford Mar 23 '26
meanwhile there's me kicking himself for skipping out on a Ruger Wrangler and those Norinco 1911s that were all sub $400

Haha. I had one in my cart at the deadline. Decided it was too much. Sigh.

I’ll be angry at myself forever over the time I could have bought a Steyr GB on consignment at my LGS, one of my favourite curiosity handguns that is actually somewhat available, and I decided I shouldn’t spend $800 then.

u/prosper_0 Mar 23 '26
i was in paralysis between an x-frame s&w 500, or a BFR 45-70. Couldn't decide, got neither. yay.
1
u/spicymeatmemes Mar 23 '26
Knowing what I know now, I would have went with the s&w 500
The BFR is just not a good time to shoot, single action, unwieldy compared to the 500 in terms of forward weight and the only redeeming factor for the BFR is you're shooting 45-70 gummint
1
u/prosper_0 Mar 23 '26
yeah. I never really liked single actions. But the BFR is just cool. Especially if you top it with a nice burris pistol scope or something. A Super Redhawk was also in consideration, the 454 is no 500 but it's no slouch either

Regret not getting a FN five-seven. At least I got a Cz shadow 2 though
3
u/spicymeatmemes Mar 23 '26
The racecar gun. Did you get the blue grips, too?
Jk, great guns, amazing trigger and love the low bore height.
I was going to get one of those if I couldn't get a Jericho 941

The Supreme Court is not going to bail us out in this respect. C-21 solidified the handgun freeze, so while they can rule the executive branch originally deciding to ban the transfer of handguns was Ultra Vires, they can not overrule/judge current legislation that solidified that handgun freeze, specifically C-21 because the question isn't whether the Federal Government can restrict handguns through legislation, which historically the Supreme Court has said yes it is their authority to do so and can do so, if they choose to.

If we had a majority conservative government id see them changing their minds and reading the room.
But with the liberals pretty much at a majority I expect nothing will change. CCFR get their day in court but I dont expect any change

I am not getting hopeful. The liberal government and court have the deck stacked against us. But, if the ban were lifted I would be going after some cheap antiques as the market crashes!

u/Flashy_Inspector115 Mar 23 '26
Can someone explain to me what this supreme count decision means and what can possibly reverse?
32
u/HappyCan7250 Mar 23 '26
The court is basically looking at whether the use of OICs was improper for banning firearms. The government is allowed to ban firearms through legislation, but most banned rifles were banned via OIC, which is not their purpose. The government was essentially using OICs as legislation, rather than the administrative tool they are intended for.
By using OICs the government was, in essence, trying to create laws by bypassing debate and parliament.
The other aspect of the case is that firearms are not to be deemed prohibited in Canada, if they have a valid use for hunting and sporting, which basically covers ALL banned guns. The problem is, it is the Ministry of public safety who gets to decide what "valid for hunting and sporting" means basically, but it is another aspect of the bans that the court will look at. I.e, does a Bren 2 or AR180 have a valid sporting use? I think the answer would be yes.
The supreme Court will not be touching C21 whatsoever, which was the original 2020 bans that covered ARs, but many of the rifles banned after 2020 (which were all done via OIC), will be part of this court case.
That said, the case only looks at whether the OICs were "legal" in their use of banning firearms, so unfortunately if the liberals want to double down again, once they have their majority next month, they could also rush through legalisation and cement every ban into law, making the court case irrelevant. In the eyes of the Supreme Court, bans via legislation that pass through the house and are voted on are perfectly valid, so if the liberals cram through a bill cementing the OIC bans using their narrow majority, then we're just plain fucked.
I believe the case will also be looking at the compensation aspect as well, as the government has basically said "fuck you" to all of us and said they won't pay us, while screaming to the public "they will receive fair compensation!"
Either way, this court case is going to shed some light on topics the Liberals want to avoid, which should make things interesting. A lot of details I think about the bans and the program will be brought to light, that the government wanted to keep secret (like the compensation being slasher to $64mil down from $250mil originally).
It will be a very interesting time for us, and for the Liberals who will probably squirm a bit having this case thoroughly examined by the courts.

C-21 was the bill that banned the transfer of handguns in 2023, the original bans on ARs in 2020 were also executed by OIC. The last-minute amendments to C-21 that would have added all the original OIC-banned guns (and much more) to actual legislation were removed by the LPC after significant public blowback.

The government is allowed to ban firearms through legislation, but most banned rifles were banned via OIC, which is not their purpose. The government was essentially using OICs as legislation, rather than the administrative tool they are intended for.
This is not quite correct.
Current legislation on the books allows firearm bans via OIC, but only if the government is of the opinion that they aren't suitable for hunting or sport.
The court challenge is basically asking "How does the government have to form their opinion?" From a practical sense it's very clear that the firearms banned are suitable for hunting and sport because that's what they were used for; people wouldn't voluntarily use them if they weren't suitable. The root of the issue is the word "opinion" has two conflicting definitions: one that doesn't require any facts/knowledge to back it up (ex. "opinions are like assholes, everyone has one"), the other in the context of an expert opinion which is solidly backed up by facts.
Basically, whichever defintion the court effectively chooses will not only affect us, but it will affect any area of law where a government decision maker has to form an "opinion" because it will become the legal standard of how the the government must for opinions.

What is OIC? And will this decision mean I can finally get an AR

Order In Council. Basically rules rammed through without vote in parliament.

The courts are stacked by Trudeau appointees. There is only one way this case is going.
The best thing this does is buys us a delay. We won’t be seeing any reverse to these prohibitions until there is eventually a CPC government.

u/HapGil Mar 23 '26
A pair of Desert Eagle Mark XIX with barrel weights in 357 so I can get my Boondock Saints: All Saints Day on! Also, a pair of 92FS with fake suppressors so I can do the first movie as well.

u/Canuk723 Mar 23 '26
Not to be this guy but even in a dream scenario in which the Supreme Court unban our rifles, the LPC is about to get a majority and from the look of things will also get a strong one next elections. They could easily just ban them hard by legislation
15
u/Lumindan Mar 23 '26
They could easily just ban them hard by legislation
They could but the optics of losing against the supreme court then ramming a bill through to get back to their current standing would be pretty bad looking.
Not that optics matters to them that much when scandal after scandal slides off them.
9
u/gamercast1337 Mar 23 '26
Dude the liberals do NOT give a shit about bad optics. Liberal voters do not give a shit about the party having bad optics, im actually almost pissed youd even make a comment on that.
I am glad you cleared it up at the end, but still. To suggest the liberals at all care about bad optics noe is crazy. They charge head first into bad optics and use the news to bail them out, and the brainwashed boomer masses watch this news and dickride the liberals.

u/SirKickBan Mar 23 '26
I don't believe the SCC will issue a ruling on the case for at least nine months or so, so it's quite possible the Liberals do their thing before that even happens.
3
u/B5_V3 Mar 23 '26
Do you think the average liberal cares about optics?
Just have the CBC repeat how “this is a good thing” and your average liberal will parrot it verbatim.

u/Shot-Job-8841 May 04 '26
The thing is that the SCC is more likely to rule against overreaching via OIC rather than the ban itself. Remember pistols were banned via legislation, which means the court could order the government to redo the rifle ban by going through Parliament the same way pistols did.

u/Spydude84 Mar 23 '26
Handguns are never coming back sadly. I mean, without a conservative majority, it just won't happen, and even then, it depends on who gets elected. If Pierre can't pull it together, I can see a future where Ford runs and wins, but I can't imagine Doug bringing handguns back.
It sucks because I shot multigun on Saturday and I was the only one without a pistol.
13
u/ProtoJazz Mar 23 '26
I'd say short term, you're probably right. But long term, who knows. You're only thinking about current people. Longer term, demographics change, parties change, leaders change.
9
u/Spydude84 Mar 23 '26
How's it going in Australia and Europe?
I mean, super long term anything can happen, but I'd like to still be alive and well when it changes.

Ford wil be in his mid sixties at the next election, even if the conservatives get their shit together and boot Pierre.
5
u/Bubbafett33 Mar 23 '26
I hope you are correct....but I have my doubts....
That said, given that concealed carry is absolutely never happening, there is no need to buy smaller guns. So I would suggest saving up for the heavier competition pistols that are a dream to shoot. Specifically the CZ Shadow 2 OR in 9mm (or, if you are of the wealthier sort, one of the tac sport variants).

u/Neat_Imagination2503 Mar 23 '26
I think all that is going to happen is the Supreme Court will side with the liberals and then they can say they listened

I hate to say it, but there is zero chance anything comes from this Supreme Court case. Look at the spread of Judges appointed to the SC.

While rights are one argument within the court challenge (and this argument will likely fail), the main argument is about the legal mechanism by which the OIC was instituted. There is no such issue with handguns because it has been solidified by an Act of Parliament.
