Sterling arms and Shooting Edge

With the news of The Shooting Edge closing doors, does anyone have any information or knowledge as to how this affect Sterling Arms operation in the future. Specifically the release of the r18 mk3 as well as replacement parts for the r18 mk2?

Way too much history of poor business practices but the hits include:

  • Getting the CZ 858 and Swiss arms banned
  • Making a stink in the media when his competitors got robbed, then getting robbed
  • Treating customers poorly
  • Hiding or poorly communicating key aspects of products

Long story short he complained his competitors were selling “converted prohibs” and the RCMP banned the whole family of rifles instead of just the “converted prohibs.” He just also seems to have a reputation for being an ass to customers and employees, if you search his name on here there are some threads about him

Essentially there was a fight between them and CSC where he, to get back at the owners who were his former business partners, went and squeeled to the RCMP that they were converted autos.

That's my understanding.

To copy a comment of mine from a different thread:

So JR (James R) Cox, James Baschynsky, and Marcus Furrer all used to own The Shooting Edge together (along with other silent and smaller investors). JR essentially fired his two partners (James B and Marcus), tried to not pay them out, and ended up having to pay them in inventory (guns) after a multi year legal battle. Which was sorta okay as James B and Marcus went on to open the Calgary Shooting Centre. I'm sure they would have preferred cash... but...

They have a long standing, bitter rivalry between them. JR is especially a spiteful person. He has personally tried to screw me over, over what is essentially nothing, with something he himself agreed to. Petty dumb shit.

The entire Canadian firearms industry is like this. Petty people, holding Petty grudges against each other. Every store hates some other store for some reason or another.

Just honestly wondering. How do you define “petty” here as it relates to disputes in terms of how much was at stake and how much was lost?

Especially on the continuum between other related adjectives one can use to describe how a person dealt with a dispute from “weak/spineless” on one end, “principled/driven” in the middle and “belligerent/irrational” on the other extreme?

I have so many stories.

When JR heard the name of the new range (Calgary Shooting centre), he immediately parked www.calgaryshootingcentre.com and made it redirect to www.theshootingedge.com

Yeah, silly of CSC to not park the domain, but jacking it is just... Petty.

SAI is separate and not impacted by TSE's closure. The two are owned by JR Cox whose track record is not the shiniest. To the guy's credit, he apologized for the Swiss Arms fiasco, but the apparent hiding of an impending bankruptcy and the muddy origins of the Mk3 do not inspire the greatest confidence. As long as the gun works properly I guess...

The amount of people claiming the the R18 is a new design when it's so obviously an Akdas SEM 223 is just funny to me. I had someone tell me with a straight face try to say the SEM 223 was actually made first using SAI designs...

Yeah that’s the official story, SAI supposedly commissioned the R18 from which the SEM 223 was derived. However the official story also says AKDAS developed the R9 alone before that. Now how both the R9 and the SEM 223 got the exact same design cues if SAI developed the R18 first, I don’t know. None of it makes any sense, but it’s still exciting to get a potentially reliable MCX-at-home option in this market.
