I can't believe the government is trying to disarm us and there isn't huge pushback. Can't we get a massive protest going?

This right here. Not a gun owner yet (PAL pending), but I personally find a lot of issues more pressing than guns, such as education, healthcare, and affordability. I applied for my PAL for hunting purposes, so that I could save some money on food while also eating in a more ethical way. Our biggest issue is FPTP — proportional representation or ranked ballots would allow more political viewpoints into Parliament. No party fits 100% of my political viewpoints, but the CPC and I have nothing in common except for guns. That’s not enough for my vote.

I’m honestly not here to debate the intricacies of my political beliefs — however — in a democratic country, do you think we should ever have a situation where the minority of total votes results in a majority government? Because I personally think that’s not a very democratic thing.

For better or for worse, democracy is supposed to represent what the majority of the population wants. We shouldn’t accept any situation of minority rule just because the popular party doesn’t align with our personal views. If you want to win an election with the population being represented fairly, then you should make sure the majority of the population wants to vote for your party.

I support proportional, I just oppose ranked. I also oppose coalition rule because nobody voted for the semi-merged party

I could agree with you on proportional vs. ranked. I like proportional better too.

Coalitions are as old as democracy itself. It’s a natural part of the democratic process — 2 parties with similar goals work together. It’s happened on the right too (see: merger of the progressive conservative and canadian alliance)

It also shits all over people who may not have voted for party X if they knew they'd work with Y. For instance, a Liberal voter that often swings CPC may not vote Lib knowing that they'd form a coalition with the NDP. Coalitions basically throw a massive fuck you to the opposite wing of the party

A merger is not a coalition. And mergers should trigger elections.

I disagree. If government is a “representation of the population,” then isn’t cooperation with others part of that? Sometimes I have to work on a project with someone that I don’t fully agree with and we find middle ground and complete the work.

No, because if cooperation with the NDP lost the Liberals my vote, then a coalition is failing to represent me. If I was such a voter, I voted Liberal, not the average Liberal/NDP position which is obviously more NDP than I wanted. .

Middle ground on gun control is always more gun control.

I wonder if Liberal fudds will still be making the same arguments in 40 years when they ban hunter-caliber boltys saying they're "sniper rifles".

Just use a crossbow bro, you don't need a 2-round bolt gun to take a deer!
