so what are the thoughts on the Uvalde school shooting?

Disasters like this are central to discussions of gun control.

I know most of the takes are going to be garbage, interested to see if there will be anything new and reasonable in the replies.

There's a good chance this incident would not have happened "in the way it did" if he were in Canada even with the pre-OIC rules:

  • He could not have purchased firearms without a PAL.

  • He could not have stolen a firearm easily given our storage riles.

  • He would have needed 2 references to apply for a PAL. Reports say that he was a loner and openly weirded people out around him. It's questionable whether he could have found 2 references.

  • he could not have purchased a firearm on his 18th birthday if he were in Canada.

  • The CFSC instructor would have added another layer of possibly noticing his weirdness.

That being said, I said this incident would not have happened "in the way it did" if he were in Canada. But he still could have killed a bunch of kids. Reports say that he went to the school in a truck and drove it recklessly in a ditch. If he didn't have any guns, he could have relied less on weapons and formulated a tighter plan to use his truck to cause carnage. 86 people were killed with a truck in France. That's more than the Las Vegas shooting. There was a time in US history when people had large cap mag semiautos but mass shootings were not as common. People see and people copy. My real fear is when the crazies figure out that trucks are more effective than firearms. Then we're doomed.
