First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.

This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.

To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.

We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.

Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

Imagine the unholy tantrum poly is gonna throw when the SCC case is won in our favour. Perhaps I’m being too hopeful

I'm not sure if this is a joke or not, but the SCC ruling in our favour would make it much harder for the libs to try and pull something like this again in the future.

You can't just reintroduce a new bill doing the same thing that was deemed unconstitutional by the courts, thankfully.

There’s also the very real question of would they even want to.

This is a wildly unpopular program that almost the entire country is refusing to partake in. The police are largely done with it. They have some collection points up and running in major centres but outside of that, paying third party contractors to run around the second largest country by landmass is going to cost you your firstborn child.

My guess is, IF and I mean IF the Supreme Court rules in our favour, this whole thing pretty much fizzles out. C-21 remains in place and so does the handgun freeze unfortunately, but everything else gets nullified and the government washes their hands of this.

The courts would say the government can’t ban through OIC, the government can just use their majority to ban through parliament

Yeah the bill is probably already drawn up if they are even remotely forward thinking. They can even throw in the few new things that have popped up since the previous bans that they "missed". They don't even need a majority, the bloc/NDP would support it either way. While I 100% agree with the challenge on using OIC's for this kind of thing because it has far farther implication than firearms, we very well could end up in a significantly worse position when the liberals just sign it all into law. Then we will need a full conservative majority, probably years or decades in the future to even ask to have it removed, and we all know how conservative politicians are about rescinding long standing firearms bans (they have never done it once FYI)

We have to essentially pray that A. We win the court case. and B. The liberals suddenly decide they don't want to touch firearms stuff again (while having the nations foremost gun grabber as part of their government) X to doubt.

The only way out of all of this is a conservative MAJORITY government who also remains strongly committed to reversing ALL trudeau-era gun regulation changes, the liberals have virtually unlimited other options for preventing anyone from ever taking one of those banned firearms to the range again until that time.

I don’t think they will.

IF the Supreme Court rules in our favour and the bans get struck down (best case scenario), the government is going to look really shitty given how much money was spent on this and it’s likely they’ll burn up a boatload of political capital in the process. Gun bans will more than likely be too toxic to touch for a while.
