News / Politics / Activism ASFCP: new page showing collection schedule by province; AB and SK excluded

https://www.canada.ca/en/public-safety-canada/campaigns/firearms-buyback/firearm-collection-timeline.html

From the beginning, the "ASFCP" has included two ominous footnotes alluding to how they're going to violate gun owners that declare their property.

- "Compensation is not guaranteed"

And, should you reside in AB or SK

- "Individuals who live in Alberta or Saskatchewan should consult their provincial government for laws or regulations put in place that may impede or limit their participation in the program."

Now, we know there is a licensing scheme for potential private collection agents in the Alberta legislation. I have not looked into SK.

Should you contact the AB CFO, you will learn the Federal government has not applied for any confiscation agent licensing.

So, the very obvious indication here is that they intend to wash their hands of responsibility in these two provinces and leave any owners who declared property to face the end of the amnesty with no option but to deactivate or surrender their property.

Absolutely shameful how this program has been handled.

Mass non compliance is the only way.

Still blows my mind they got 67,000 turned in. Extremely disappointing

They haven't got 67k turned in, just declared. People have with drawn since then, plus the guns the program won't collect in AB and Sask.

Then remember thar this program is done by appointment, so people have to actually bother to make an appointment and show up. Given that most people work Monday to Friday, it means the program will effectively mostly be done on evenings and weekends, assuming the program has the volunteers to run. Its quickly running out of time.

And there is also the 2+ million guns that weren't declared. The government hasn't publicly declared their plans to collect those, and even though the window for compensation has closed, presumably hundreds of thousands of people will have to hand them in by october 31st (i know they won't but the government should be planning for it and their not).

Aren’t 30k of those from stores/businesses?

u/boozefiend3000 Jun 07 '26

No, the 67,000 was all from individual people 👎🏻

20 something thousand people collaborated, they turned in 67,000 rifles

I do think that a large chunk of that number is stuff that has been in police possession. IIRC the initial week after the program started they claimed 21K and then a week (or several?) after that they claimed not even 23K. It took 2 more months to make it to 67K.

There would absolutely have been a higher participation rate in the first week overall too but I'm convinced the RCMP was told to clean house on seized/surrendered firearms if they were on the prohib list.

This is the way

Could be the dumbest comment on tic tok…..and that’s saying something.

lol…..you guys don’t think mass non- compliance is exactly what the liberals want ?? At the end of the amnesty, the Government will suspend all licenses and brand us criminals.

The only way to prevent it, is to put so much pressure on provincial leaders…..they interfere on our behalf. Looks Like that is what is happening amongst many provinces.

The clock is ticking and just waiting for the deadline like nothing will happen afterwards, just makes us look like fools.

Are you lost? Did you just comment to fear monger?

The government will never end the program because then they'd lose the shield they have on public safety. They need to keep the show running and they don't have a method to track or collect. What you're saying is the government is willing to criminalize hundreds of thousands of people overnight. Absolutely out to lunch take.

The only way to prevent it, is to put so much pressure on provincial leaders…..they interfere on our behalf. Looks Like that is what is happening amongst many provinces.

How do you think it got there in the first place? Mass non-compliance is part of it because it shows how wasteful the program is and taxes the police bodies that have to answer to the province.

The clock is ticking and just waiting for the deadline like nothing will happen afterwards, just makes us look like fools.

You're young and naive or here with a bad faith argument. We've seen how this has gone before, some us lived through the long gun registry. Same threats, same fear monger.

Mass non-compliance the only way forward until a different government comes into power.

I've seen bad takes on this sub, but man you should put a /s at the end of yours because yikes.

Mass non compliance literally worked for the long gun registry

I mean the program shouldn’t even exist to began with. I don’t think there is a world where this program is run properly.

One can write to politicians, the media, about this reality all day long and none of them respond back - not only are effected owners screwed by the government, but also their direct representatives and the media

7

u/Anla-Shok-Na Jun 07 '26

It depends which media. The media in Quebec and the GTA, where the Liberal base is, is captured by the anti-gun groups and will only report government approved facts on this subject. They might include a shirt quote from "the other side" of the debate if they feel like pretending they're impartial that day.

April to June for PEI is hilarious. There has been zero information released about how to turn in your firearms here and we're already a week into June.

Do not please.

Same for here in Nova Scotia. I’ve heard nothing and June is here…

You had to self declare if you wanted to participate. Then they sent out packaging and you could book an appointment to turn in.

Did you expect more from the scumbags who run this country? 🤷🏼‍♂️

Keep your firearms. Don't give in to their threats. Together we are strong.

Ontario is hilarious, June to October….wtf a range is that 5 months, like very informative federal government

The part they are missing is its by appointment, most people work Monday to friday. That means the window is reduced to mostly evening and weekends on top of how short it already is.

If you live in Saskatchewan or Alberta, and signed up for this, you deserve whatever you get, at this point. Your provinces are actually doing something to help you, and you hung yourself out to dry for no reason, as far as I’m concerned.

Are they helping us, actually?
The laws enacted by AB UCP restrict our ability to participate in the program if we choose to do so.
If you decide to not participate, and you don't dispose of your firearms, you are violating the law.
Will law enforcement come knocking at your door? Probably not.
However, will you experience legal issues in the future regardless? Good chance the answer could be yes.
If someone knowledgeable of the issue becomes aware you still possess your firearms, they could report you. Police could respond to an unrelated call to your home, and end up checking the safe.
Will you need to move house in the future? Perhaps someone will become aware of your illicit firearms during the move.
Not to mention you will be asked during your next license renewal if you disposed of any/all prohibited firearms - to which answering no would incriminate you, and to which answering yes would be violating another law.
All hope lies with the Conservative party obtaining a majority government in the future - a prospect that is looking impossible these days.

They can just declare that provincial prosecutors will not be enforcing the law on any firearms covered by the OIC regardless and they have already alluded to that being the plan down the road. BC did something similar with drugs and the feds did nothing about it. There is no point announcing that officially early (before the amnesty ends, especially when it could very well be extended or some type of grandfathering brought in, etc) you would announce it like a week before the amnesty ends so if the feds try to challenge in court it will take as long as possible.

Laws are barely real in this country, government municipal, provincial and federal just ignore, refuse to enforce, or forget about them all the time and there are no consequences. For once the fact that the government will just pick and choose when to play by the rulebook will benefit us (at least out west) for once.

But the federal could still revoque your Pal ... Its in there power, its free and they dont need the provinces for that.

3

u/gspotcowboy Jun 08 '26

They could, yes. If you have non restricted prohibs bought before 2022 and aren't in Quebec it will very much be a needle in a haystack operation to find these firearms though because they effectively don't exist. Even if bought after the business requirement to keep records, the RCMP will have to serve warrants, scour through tens of thousands of receipts, and have the CFP serve you notice to inspect your collection.

There will be no "no knock" warrants issued to kick down doors for owners they think might have undeclared prohibs, just like there were no doors being kicked down in the 90s when full autos were prohibited and many long guns were reclassified as restricted. Owners could have destroyed their NR prior to December 5th 2024 without reporting it, in full compliance of the law.

Your license can't be revoked or not renewed because the feds think you own an OIC prohib. They would have to prove it first.

Of course, this doesn't apply if someone has a newly prohibited, registered restricted firearm on their license. They would have until October 30th to report that they've destroyed it to remain in compliance with the law. The act doesn't require proof of the destruction, just that it be reported. Whether the RCMP double down on that is anyone's guess and we'll see, however it will take months if not years for the bureaucracy to move on that.
