From the beginning, the "ASFCP" has included two ominous footnotes alluding to how they're going to violate gun owners that declare their property.

- "Compensation is not guaranteed"

And, should you reside in AB or SK

- "Individuals who live in Alberta or Saskatchewan should consult their provincial government for laws or regulations put in place that may impede or limit their participation in the program."

Now, we know there is a licensing scheme for potential private collection agents in the Alberta legislation. I have not looked into SK.

Should you contact the AB CFO, you will learn the Federal government has not applied for any confiscation agent licensing.

So, the very obvious indication here is that they intend to wash their hands of responsibility in these two provinces and leave any owners who declared property to face the end of the amnesty with no option but to deactivate or surrender their property.

Absolutely shameful how this program has been handled.

If you live in Saskatchewan or Alberta, and signed up for this, you deserve whatever you get, at this point. Your provinces are actually doing something to help you, and you hung yourself out to dry for no reason, as far as I’m concerned.

Are they helping us, actually?
The laws enacted by AB UCP restrict our ability to participate in the program if we choose to do so.
If you decide to not participate, and you don't dispose of your firearms, you are violating the law.
Will law enforcement come knocking at your door? Probably not.
However, will you experience legal issues in the future regardless? Good chance the answer could be yes.
If someone knowledgeable of the issue becomes aware you still possess your firearms, they could report you. Police could respond to an unrelated call to your home, and end up checking the safe.
Will you need to move house in the future? Perhaps someone will become aware of your illicit firearms during the move.
Not to mention you will be asked during your next license renewal if you disposed of any/all prohibited firearms - to which answering no would incriminate you, and to which answering yes would be violating another law.
All hope lies with the Conservative party obtaining a majority government in the future - a prospect that is looking impossible these days.

They can just declare that provincial prosecutors will not be enforcing the law on any firearms covered by the OIC regardless and they have already alluded to that being the plan down the road. BC did something similar with drugs and the feds did nothing about it. There is no point announcing that officially early (before the amnesty ends, especially when it could very well be extended or some type of grandfathering brought in, etc) you would announce it like a week before the amnesty ends so if the feds try to challenge in court it will take as long as possible.

Laws are barely real in this country, government municipal, provincial and federal just ignore, refuse to enforce, or forget about them all the time and there are no consequences. For once the fact that the government will just pick and choose when to play by the rulebook will benefit us (at least out west) for once.
