Plenty of folks in BC and Alberta have been able to apply for the Target Shooting Exemption through a few associations. Plenty have had success!

Competition. Must have RPAL, be a member of a shooting club, and be a member of the Shooting Federation of Canada I believe. Also, I believe it only exempts you from buying .22 pistols. I don’t have one, this is only what a gathered from doing my own personal research. If anyone has better info please correct me.

I have my exemption but I’m not a member of the shooting federation of Canada, just BCTSA. Generally it limits you to .22 pistols, but there is a part of the exemption where you can apply for higher calibers. Easy to do in Alberta, harder to do here in BC, and unknown in the rest of Canada

So the exemption letter for BC (under the sports reason) will allow you to apply for higher calibers. However, another coach’s signature is needed (for the .22 exemption, a coach wasn’t necessary even if it states so on the paperwork [this was confirmed when I emailed BCTSA and they replied a coach wasn’t necessary for .22s]).

Thehuntinggearguy in Alberta said that Alberta’s CFO will approve higher calibers for exempted sporting individuals much more freely than BC (or elsewhere in Canada so it seems)

So im looking to do this in BC you do need to be a member of a range correct before you can send in the application for for the pistol exemption ??

Correct yes, you do need to be a member of some sort of firing range or rod and gun club. You also have to be a member of BCTSA (50$), but I signed up the night before and submitted my paperwork the next day and got it

I thought the gun club needs to be associated with the shooting association no? And not all clubs are ? That was my understanding anyways. Maybe someone smarter can clarify?

I got the exemption WITHOUT disclosing what range I belonged to (I wasn’t hiding it, I just forgot). You have to list the range however when doing a restricted transfer. It does so happen that my range is affiliated, but I listed it after I already received my exemption

Do you actually have to compete or? The reason I ask is I want to get into target shooting. But can only go to one or two competitions a year.

Not exactly, the exemption form states that you WISH to compete or train in the discipline (on the handgun exemption page of the BCTSA website, they explain a little bit of the process)

Good choice. The Mark IV is insanely easier to clean than the previous versions of the Ruger pistol.

I bought a mark iii used. I don't think it had ever been cleaned. Never seen so much buildup ever

With the Mark III, it's not taking it apart that's the problem. It's learning how to jiggle it just right to get it back together.

Yup. Have had mine for a about 6 years now. It's not just insanely easier to clean than previous versions of the pistol, it's just straight up insanely easy to clean. I can field strip mine blindfolded in less than a second.

I absolutely LOVE my 22/45 mark IV. My only complaint about it isn't even really an issue with the gun per se but actually an issue with how our regulations are defined. Because, in regards to handguns, the goverment chose the part of the gun that the sliding mechanism attaches to as the regulatory controlled part of the gun, aftermarket barrels for them are the part that's registered and controlled, unlike the overwhelming majority of other handguns where it's the grip/ frame that's controlled. This was annoying even before all the new regs got written since you had to go through the full handgun purchasing process just to but a new barrel since their "bolt" is attached to the barrel first. Now it's worse with the freeze in effect since once your barrel inevitably wears out you'll eventually have a useless gun unless you Have the exemption for it.

Can you take the gun home or does it have to stay at the gun club?

And if you can take the gun home could you practice with it on an acerage or are you limited to range use only ?

You have to got thru the cfo's transfer process for restricted firearms, then it becomes yours just like all other restricteds. att conditions allow you to transport it to any range in the province & bring it home from the place of purchase . If the acreage is your legal address then ofc you can store it there. Regards to shooting on your acreage , if your bylaws allow it then why not?

All depends on what you want the pistol for. I have numerous co2 pistols that are almost 1:1 replicas of the real ones. Glock 7 and 9. I use these ones specifically to practice at home and then run drills at the range with the range pistols. sig p365 and 1911 Emperor Scorpion. A couple revolvers as they are fun to shoot and reload. 2 single shots, 1 co2 and 1 break barrel for target shooting. I'm just waiting for the right price to jump into pcp.

There are plenty out there. Many also has blowback features to replicate firing a real pistol. I find shooting a 22 is similar to a BB gun as recoil management is not needed.

Just apply to work at at an Armoured Car company, its less than a week training, work part time, they are very flexible

By working in the Armoured car industry grants you an ATC

I doubt those people get to bring their guns home and I'm sure the firearms remain the property of the business.
