Recurring Canadaguns Politics and Debate Thread

Please post all your Gun Politics or Ban-related ideas, questions, initiatives, comments, suggestions, news articles, and recommendations in this thread. This thread recurs every 14 days.

First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.

This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.

To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.

We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.

Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

Castle Law debate, GO!

We're not the US, and we aren't in the wild west. We know more guns = more violence. It's nothing more than a toxic individualist- maple MAGA american-style fantasy. Just call the police like a normal person, and leave your valuables on the front porch. We dont even need to get into the humanitarian aspect that what amounts to an extra-judicial murder would disproportionately impact BIPOC people and people experiencing poverty. Public health experts agree.

Studies suggest leaving your keys at the door and lubing up your bum is the safest course of action.

Why is this always landing on the “we are not the USA” argument. Yes buddy we got it. Canadian gun owners are some of the most law abiding citizens you’ll ever meet. The argument is that one should be able to defend yourself in your own home.

It’s such a dumb boomer argument. Like if the US tomorrow decrees that they’ll provide free healthcare to everyone, then we here in Canada will abolish publicly funded healthcare?!

Firstly, American politicians just love corporate exploitation of the people, they don't particularly care about what happens. But if they did, if they actually changed things, then yeah. You and I both know Canadians would suddenly be in favor of private healthcare out of spite.

I’m with you lol, but are you assuming Carney, Ford, and our politicians aren’t the same ? Lol

Oh you are absolutely correct. Ford is already handing over Ontario Healthcare to AI.

Note the person who says this lives in either a gated community/upper income area and will cross the street if they even come up on somebody who looks homeless.  They also try to represent the working class but feel nothing but disgust when actually interacting with them

nothing you said is incorrect, however the debate rests on if someone whose home is being invaded should be able to defend themselves (not necessarily their property) with equal force as is being presented.

if someone breaks in to your house with a knife, and you turn it around and stab them instead, hardly anyone would argue that you should be prosecuted for that. the extension of that logic goes for any weapon - bat, crowbar, and yes, even gun.

similarly, if the country ("your home") was invaded by armed people, there's zero debate about the reasonableness of shooting them. home invasions can be considered merely a micro version of a ground invasion.

I’m sad that you didn’t recognize my comment as irony. It is also wrong. I don’t think there’s any provable correlation between civilian ownership of guns and crime

except it's not wrong.

We're not the US, and we aren't in the wild west.

true

We know more guns = more violence.

also true(ish) - more guns = more gun violence

It's nothing more than a toxic individualist- maple MAGA american-style fantasy.

there's zero question that those people insist that castle doctrine is fair and reasonable (amongst other groups as well)

Just call the police like a normal person,

yes, you should be doing this

and leave your valuables on the front porch.

obviously hyperbole

We dont even need to get into the humanitarian aspect that what amounts to an extra-judicial murder would disproportionately impact BIPOC people and people experiencing poverty.

literally the case - poor people commit way more violent crimes than non-poor people. there are way more BIPOC people who are poor than white people (as a % of their respective populations).

Public health experts agree.

generally, public health experts do agree that shooting someone is bad and could lead to their death.

"also true(ish) - more guns = more gun violence"

Frankly that's bullshit and someone who claims they're leftwing should recognize that. After all if this was true you'd see a rather close connection but when you look at the data you don't. Like Jamaica for example which last I checked has the highest rates of gun violence in the world doesn't have the highest rates of gun ownership. What's a far bigger factor is the GINI Index.

"there's zero question that those people insist that castle doctrine is fair and reasonable (amongst other groups as well)"

And what exactly is your issue with castle doctrine and letting people protect themselves?

"yes, you should be doing this"

Again you claim to be a leftist yet say shit like this? You want me to call people who only are good at stealing children, crushing workers, protecting the rich, and shooting up firehalls. Who will show up after the crime has been committed and I'm dead? Like to trust the police and be left wing is a pretty absurd thing if you ask me.

"obviously hyperbole"

Tell me why it's fine for the mints and money transport trucks to have armed guards but when a peon defends there property it's a bridge to far?

"nothing you said is incorrect, however the debate rests on if someone whose home is being invaded should be able to defend themselves (not necessarily their property) with equal force as is being presented.

if someone breaks in to your house with a knife, and you turn it around and stab them instead, hardly anyone would argue that you should be prosecuted for that. the extension of that logic goes for any weapon - bat, crowbar, and yes, even gun.

similarly, if the country ("your home") was invaded by armed people, there's zero debate about the reasonableness of shooting them. home invasions can be considered merely a micro version of a ground invasion."

So if America came and invaded Canada but just for the resources and not to kill people you'd be fine with that by your logic at least? Because you consider it unreasonable to use lethal force to defend property from what I'm gathering in your comments.

I said more guns = more violence, then you and your study changed it to more guns = more gun violence. Thats the only part that really matters, the rest is completely irrelevant, its just brain dead and thought-terminating nonsense pushed by people that hate us.
