Application / Regulation advice Saskatchewan Firearms Appraisal App

The Saskatchewan Firearms Appraisal and Verification App to receive a certificate of exemption has launched.

Will be interesting to see how well this works / doesn't work out in the end.

Provinces that don't support the buyback and gun bans should just issue a "Certificate of Exemption" to any gun owner allowing them to possess, store, transport, and use prohibited firearms.

Saskatchewan fundamentally still supports the bans and buyback with their plan.

This is actually a good point - it truthfully is about ensuring fair compensation which isnt the same as complete opposition to the ban. Still better than nothing / being an active supporter/partner.

Is it known when the Supreme Court hearing is?

I am really hoping AB does this.

I'm surprised Alberta is lagging so far behind Sask, I wish we got out shit together on this topic. Some provincial licensing or something.

Alberta government doesn't actually care about Albertans because they will the vote them in regardless of what they do or dont do.

I am not a Danielle Smith fan.

We can see that. Do you think the NDP would do anything to allow Albertans to keep their firearms?

Are they more like the Sask NDP or the BC NDP?

ok bro

You could make that same argument in Saskatchewan, as well then if you wanted?

Yes you definitely could. Some people certainly agree. So far firearms ownership has been a bipartisan (from a Government and Opposition perspective) and we were the first to have this support from our Government.

Thankfully our Premier doesnt flirt with Separatists though.

Are you supposed to ignore a large portion of your voter base?

Until there is anything resembling a legal mandate or at the very least they campaigned openly on this and won, then yes, a provincial government should ignore this.

Edit: and if petition numbers are correct at 6% of population, even a basic understanding of math should say that is not a large portion of their voters.

Large portion of your voter base

I hope you’re not taking about the separatists, because they’re not a large portion and are fucking idiots.

Whether you like them or not they are a significant portion. I dont agree with it either. But facts are facts whether you like facts or not

I don’t think you know what significant portion means. The Canada forever petition got almost double them.

I would define 5% of the population as signifcant and I believe there has been more than 5% of the population to sign for independence. And I wouldnt doubt for a second the canada forever petition got more. Im not saying I agree with the independent movement

Imagine the federal government pursued firearm bans with the logic that 5% is significant. We'd be having this discussion on an airgun forum if we were lucky.

I wish other provinces would do this, it at least protects Sask owners from getting any legal trouble after October 30th if the Feds don’t extend the amnesty.

u/DwayneGretzky306 May 04 '26

I am concerned the provinces dont have the same legal interpretation of the situation and so dont want to put the effort into something they think would be doomed to fail.

Im a sceptic that this will work, but I appreciate that Sask is trying something. AB is pathetic, a ton of promises by the Premier and then 0 action. The ACFO’s response to my question was just legal nonsense like they are being told not to say anything.

u/DwayneGretzky306 May 04 '26

I hear you. I am glad they are trying something.

Nope, this is government overstep “lite” they still want to take your legally owned property.

2

u/StrongBreak2142 May 05 '26

I am interested in this, but I think I will wait a week or two before the supposed end of the amnesty before I sign up.

1

u/DwayneGretzky306 May 05 '26

Yea I hear you. Hopefully things will be more clear once the Supreme Court hearing occurs (hopefully sooner than later).

The service, which is operated by the Saskatchewan Firearms Office (SFO), will:

  • let individuals know if their firearms are affected by federal legislation or bans;
  • provide appraisals (known as certificates of value) for all firearms and non-transferable ammunition and accessories impacted by federal firearms bans and legislation;
  • provide certificates of exemption to eligible firearms owners; and
  • offer storage solutions to firearms owners for their prohibited firearms to ensure compliance with federal legislation after the amnesty ends on October 30, 2026.

1

u/FedInformant May 04 '26

Will you have to declare non-restricted firearms in order to participate in this?

9

u/PrestigiousStatus711 May 04 '26

No. Registration/declaration results in confiscation. Never trust the government

1

u/FedInformant May 04 '26

Yea 100 percent, thats what I was getting at. I was just wondering what info is required to receive the exemption?

2

u/cdn_sentry117 May 07 '26

Sounds like a registry. I like the Sask Party, but now they would know what everyone has. Who's to say they don't have a data breach like the feds did? Then all that information is out there to be used against us.

Individuals certainly have to do their own risk/benefit analysis for this.

It would be nice if Supreme Court case happens well before Oct.
