I love how the Waterloo police chief can't read the room... 95% of police agencies say F that, but Waterloo looks at the number of agencies that refused, and then they say, "You know what, we're going to help with stealing guns from legal owners."

Huge L ...

Reinforces the opinion I’ve had for many years that the WRPS is the single most pathetic police force in the country

HRP has entered the chat.

Yeah.. though it's likely little surprise, given that our city council are mostly a bunch of woke idiots and our mayor is a liberal idiot who's failed up his entire life.

Lol they’re a close second in my mind

Where do you think most of the budget went? Its not going to gun owners lmao.

Dude saw a quick pay day and jumped on it.

How absolutely shameful.

They have to pay for those sniper overtime hours somehow. Who else is going to protect the children participating in the Easter egg hunt??

Honestly…. It’s actually insane the police have the option to enforce/or not the law.

This decision shouldn’t be the coming from a police chief.

If they ignore/enforce this, what else are they executing this kind of legislative power over??

You must be very young.

Police (at least in the western tradition) have long had discretion over what to pursue -or not pursue.

Being drunk and disorderly in public is illegal in most places. Do they camp outside of bars after legislated closing and arrest everyone they find relieving themselves in an alley?

If that person is doing so after picking fights with everyone on their walk to wherever, then yeah, probably. If that person simply had a weak bladder and is making a discrete stop while quietly going on their way home and not causing further trouble, probably not.

The former is being a clear nuisance. The latter similarly likely not on the right side of the law, but the harms being done to society are not equal. An arrest, even without charge, might make a lasting impact on someone's employability, their future prospects. On the balance, is it worth it to throw the book at either person? For the former, perhaps. For the latter, it's likely that on the balance they'd allow that person to go home without invervention - is the benefit to society higher from punishing someone for a lapse in judgement so small outweighed by the societal harm done by interveneing, that person being jailed, losing their job, perhaps impacting their family structure?

Wide discretion in enforcement is how you balance the costs (direct and indirect, societal and individual) against the benefit. It's also how you get a drunken, drug addict mayor flying under the radar for years - discretion being applied incorrectly is as bad for society as it being applied correctly.

Personally, i'd rather some discretion in the hands of police than every small infraction being met with the full weight of the law. Judge Dredd isn't a vision of the future I find appealing, nor do I want to see a future in which the line between lethal and illegal so sharp it's trivial to cross inadvertently.

The confiscation program is simply discretion writ large. Most rational police services (and premiers) understand there is no threat to society from civilian ownership of firearms, particularly under a well run regulatory framework. They are keeping their scarce resources pointed at criminality, as they should, by declining.

The only people inclined to participate are doing so because of the cynical political arithmetic of optics in urban Quebec, the GTA and parts of BC, or are motivated by ideology because they hate freedom, personal responsibility and are so blinded by their beliefs that they are dispensing with thousands of years of knowledge and evidence in favour of a well armed and proficient civilian population by literally choosing to ignore the facts.

Also, discretionary power and legislative power are fundamentally different things. The fact that some Canadians don't understand the difference between these words is in large part why we've slipped into this mess. We've become a country far too stupid for our own good.

They always have to pick their battles. They used to ignore a lot of mj smokers because there were more important things to focus on.

Why in the world would WRPS sign on to the program? How much money did the force get?

67

u/boozefiend3000 Mar 21 '26

Maybe they just have a cuck ass police chief like Halifax does🤷🏻‍♂️

RCMP Deputy Commish Larkin is old WRPS Chief. Connect the dots. There's only two of them.

“While we will continue to prioritize reducing violent crime, holding violent offenders accountable, and removing illegal firearms locally, the ASFCP provides a safe and responsible location for gun owners to dispose of their prohibited firearms ahead of the federal deadline,”

Such disgusting political rhetoric, lumping law abiding firearm owners in with violent crime and violent offenders.

They're only "illegal firearms" because with the stroke of a pen and a bunch of unknown votes in Montreal, the LPC made them illegal. The gun crime in Waterloo has yet to include a legal firearm as far as I'm aware.

As a police service, we have a duty to uphold the law and reduce the overall presence of illegal firearms in our community.”

The only duty I'm seeing is to Bryan Larkin and to support this political BS.

Protest time?

12

u/Wokeforpepe Mar 21 '26

I thought I read previously that they were not participating.

19

u/Hotdog_Broth Mar 21 '26

They claimed they were “undecided” and for some reason everyone took that as “not participating” for despite it being obvious that the WRPS were avoiding the question.

7

u/TescoValueSoup Mar 21 '26

They issued a statement in February saying they had yet to make a decision

1

u/EfficientPen8682 Mar 21 '26

its the enemy liberal tactic that jeneroux used.

12

u/lewter100 Mar 21 '26

With what money? Now that we know the budget got slashed.

12

u/rastamasta45 Mar 21 '26

I gotta wonder what they offered them, announcing with only one week left in the program.

Like is WRPS now going to be the drop off point for all of Ontario? They’re the only police that agreed to do this.

11

u/coleman09 Mar 21 '26

Losers lmao

17

u/cowontag11 Mar 21 '26

Youngish police chief. Looking at a political career after policing. Lap dog to the Liberals, he'll be rewarded. Garbage leadership.

8

u/saneboy Mar 21 '26

Pretty obvious that Bryan Larkin is still calling the shots at WRPS

5

u/ovjho Mar 21 '26

I wonder if we’ll see more fence sitters do this now. The declaration period is almost over, so it’s unlikely there was anyone waiting to hear if their region was participating.

It COULD in a way help - if all police services waited until the last day to put out a memo saying they’re participating, you’d only have a day of declarations. Then they could all report participation with only a couple declarations, killing the program faster.

Either that or it’s just wimpy pandering to try and get more funding later on.

Traitors to our country.

No country worth it's weight in salt is disarming it's citizens.

3

u/Dramatic_Wrangler920 Mar 21 '26

CCFR going to organize a protest?

2

u/MLI691H Mar 21 '26

If CCFR organize one I will be there.

Also, if you are a member at Range 519, ask the range what they are going to do, as they are CCFR supporter. The range also rents out space to WRPS. Can’t double dip now can you?
