Hi everyone! I recently got my PAL and a few firearms, and have been researching how to clean them. Every method is different and the figuring out what to buy is kind of overwhelming, so if someone could tell me if this method is good, I’d appreciate it.

  1. Wipe all metal components down with dry shop towel
  2. Use G96 in really dirty areas to break down grime, wipe away with shop towel
  3. Lightly coat all metal components in G96 (maybe??)
  4. Run bore-snake with Hoppe’s #9 bore cleaner down barrel a couple times
  5. Run bore-snake with Hoppe’s oil down barrel (maybe??)
  6. Put Hoppe’s oil on rails and high friction areas
  7. Reassemble

What’s the difference between solvent, oil, and CLP (Is G96 a CLP?), and when do I use each?

Couple things. Do all your cleaning with solvent first then wipe any excess away. You want that barrel near spotless, so if a wet patch goes through and still comes out with black then keep cleaning. After everything has been cleaned and wiped go back and oil it. Generally oil is for moving parts but a small bit of oil in the barrel never hurts, especially if you are not shooting that particular gun for a while.

Solvent is the cleaner and it can be a matter of personal choice. Currently I use hoppes but I think I might be switching to ballistol once my bottle is empty. Oil is self explanatory and again can be a personal preference on which to use.

Finally, if you shoot any ammo that is corrosive or has the chance to be you will wanna add either a mix of boiling water w/dawn or windex into the cleaning. This will neutralize the salts. So flush the barrel soak any parts that came in contact. Then dry it all and clean/oil as normal.

Thanks for your reply! I went to my LGS and asked for help. They recommended a cleaning kit with a cleaning rod and different brush/patch holder attachments, and a CLP that can be used as a solvent and oil. I’ll watch a few more videos and give it a go!

Your welcome. check out arsenalforce to get an idea of what options for cleaners and oils are out there. Yes a kit of various sized brushes and tools is a must. I would also suggest a kit of various solvents, oils and other care items. As for patches, paper towels will work just as effectively most of the time and in the long run can be cheaper.
