Weekly Newbies & FAQ Thread - Post your questions here for PAL/RPAL application, timelines, CFSC/CFSRC, references & requirements, or general new to firearms ownership -type questions

So long as you are taking a direct route, even if it's over the course of more than one day, it should be fine.

And yes, your RPAL extra conditions sheet functions as an ATT to Provincially recognized ranges. You still need one for Federal ranges (Connaught for example) or to go to a gun store for serving the restricted firearm.

Just to clarify, the requirement is that the route, “in all circumstances, is reasonably direct”. If you’re travelling several hours, you need to eat. If you stop at a restaurant, I think it would be tough to say your route isn’t reasonably direct. Also consider that the regs specifically account and allow for situations where, during transport, your gun needs to be left unattended in the car. However, if the range is a 10-minute drive from your home, it becomes a lot less reasonable to stop for a sit-down meal.

Ask yourself if you would be comfortable defending your actions to a judge. If I shoot a match then go have lunch with some friends before heading back, I feel confident that a judge won’t throw me in the slammer.

If I say that I was going to a range and decided to stop at a music festival heading home I would be pretty nervous.
