I am just getting started with the firearms and I am looking for a long range rifle.

Purpose would be long range target shooting, >500 yards. From my research, it looks like a 308 or 6.5CM would be the ideal for this distance.

Any recommendations around $600? Also, should I go for a lower caliber for starting and then reassess later and buy a 2nd one?

Start with a 22, learn how to shoot.
Maybe attend Mapleseed. Get some lessons and coaching.

Agreed...you don't "get started with firearms" shooting past 500 yards with a full-power rifle. Start small, develop skills, once you're decently accurate at 200 yards then look into upgrading your setup and progressing further

I started with a .223 savage. Start at 50 yards, then 100, then 200...

If you are looking to get a dedicated target rifle you will need to spend more than that. Savage makes some accurate fair priced rifles with lots of aftermarket support. .308 is not all that everybody makes it out to be. I do have one and I like it though. What it is is a great tool for learning to read the wind. That is the hardest thing to account for. And if you want to shoot far you are going to need to reload. So plan for that. As in most things. But once cry once. Pretty much any cartridge is capable of making consistent hits at 500 yards. Some are better than others obviously.
