What happens to a restricted firearm’s registration mid-transfer (private sale)?

Once you get to the point where the recipient is waiting for the new registration to come in the mail, is the old (i.e. seller’s) registration now invalid?

My partner is going to transfer some handguns over to me before the freeze but we’re wondering if they will need to stay put in the safe until the transfer is complete.

Either way we will go through with the transfer but would like to know if we should avoid registering for upcoming matches.

yes, it's either registered to you or your partner. The old one would be invalidated and you would have to have the new one.

Technically you don't have to have a registration certificate on you, the law just says you must be the holder of the registration certificate for the restricted firearm, and you are the holder of the registration certificate because it's registered to you on the CFP side.

That said the law does allow the police to seize any restricted firearm you can't produce a registration certificate for, and can give you a hard time getting it back.

Up to you on how you want to roll the dice.

So you’re saying it would still be registered to him and ok for him to transport UP UNTIL the moment the transfer is approved and the firearm gets registered to me? With how long transfers are taking could be weeks/months before the transfer is processed.

Yes, it's still his firearm up until the transfer is approved, as he is the holder of the registration certificate for that firearm. But once it's actually transferred its a more grey area until you get the physical registration certificate in the mail, proving that the restricted firearm is registered to you.
