How do references work?

I’m scheduled to take CFSC and CRSFC and I’ve been looking at the requirements to apply for both licenses.

I’ve been narrowing down people I can use as references but I’ve been running into a few issues.

Some friends and family members are nervous about being on some sort of government database, and I have others who don’t care about that but they have thick accents and weak English.

Do they normally interview your references or is it more of a formality?

It'll be fine even if they have weak English. They'll simply ask if they have any reason to believe you are violent or should not own a firearm and if they actually know you. That's all. And that's if they even call your references at all.

They must have known you for a minimum of 3 years and your spouse can't be one of them.

Sometimes they call sometimes they don't. If your friends live in Canada than they are already in the database. They should be fine, even without perfect English.
