One thing I've noticed over the last 3 years as I've gotten into the politics of guns is how enabling the Firearms Act is for future gun control. Like what purpose could the GIC being able to suspended transfers be for except a handgun ban? The May OIC is the most blatant example of this.

Now I am not old enough to even have been alive for the passing of the Firearms Act, so for the people that have memories of it, was the enabling of future gun control a major sticking point of the bill? Or was it just so shit that focusing on what could come in the future was just not a priority

I think the will for gun control was much stronger than it was today - in the english-speaking world context as well. I'm young as well but from what I can tell the US was going through the AWB, 922(r) bullshit (which gave us the SL8, but the AWB was part of that as well I guess), effectively a Full Auto Ban, etc.

The UK saw 99.99% of handguns wiped out (sounds familiar?) alongside with a ton of shit in the 90s as well.

Australia had their big gun ban as well in '96.

I just think it was a blip in time where the pendulum swung very, very hard one way, and that any suggestion of moving any other way back then would turn you into a political pariah.

E: I just did a bit of digging, apparently in 2000 there was a challenge to the FA by 7 provinces who said it was unconstiutitonal but it was struck down by the SCC. I'm poking around using just Google Scholar and searching for old shit regarding C-17 & C-68 under Chretein, honestly it would be interesting to see how firearms legislation were laid out since the only real sources we get are paraphrased from the mouth of PSS/CGC.
