Ontario, apparently you can jus put O. Alberta just put the drop in range you plan to use and contact the CFO office and let them know you plan to shoot at that drop in range. Other provinces you will need a membership.

Yep. The Minister of law enforcement confirmed this, and I know several people who have done it.

Okay nice. So you would need a range membership to be issued a long term ATT still, correct?

No. Keep in mind the long term ATT is not a real thing. It is a commonly used term referring to the "Transportation Condition". It will come on your new PAL card you get after you buy your first restricted firearm.

Oh okay thanks. Noob here obviously.

I knew the ATT isn’t a real thing but rather an additional privilege added to the PAL but I thought you needed a membership to get that privilege.

So as a Calgarian, I can simply go shopping for a restricted, without a range membership, at the time of transfer I can say I am planning to visit drop in ranges, the transfer will be completed, they will mail me a new PAL with the .002 privilege or whatever the number is and the registration for the restricted, and then I can visit any drop in range?

Pretty much. Just make sure you call the CFO office and tell them what range you plan to shoot at, preferably before you make a purchase. Then tell the shop that is your range. The shop may or may not understand this process, so you don't need to tell them all the details.

The .0002 or whatever number on your PAL is just an incrementing serial number that grows every time they print you a PAL card. The Transportation condition is actually printed in the lower center of the card (and in French in the lower right). Your current card probably says "standard conditions are attached to this license". That is what gets updated and is the important part. Also, make sure to keep the paper the card comes attached to as that details what the condition do.

Okay great. Thanks again for all the answers. Even with the new legislation I am still optimistic nothing drastic is going to happen for a while so it still seems worth it to get a handgun even if I may be one of the last to do so and I only have a few months to enjoy it, but maybe not optimistic enough to get a range membership for a full year…

So basically there is zero reason for an Albertan or Ontarian to get an “associate membership” like silvercore because it’s literally completely pointless. I guess some associate memberships offer a discount but besides that they are kinda useless for these two provinces.

I have an associate membership at Straight Shooters because it gets me a discount and bumps me up the wait list if the range is full.

The current legislation will let to to continue to own and use your handgun. You just have to buy the handgun before the legislation goes into force.

Oh okay well that is great to know then. PAL is still in the mail (issued last week) but once that comes in I will be in business.

Yesterday u/unpoppablegrape reported... "I just called (Cabela's) they said to out 0's in the field. No info necessary. What I find weird is that you can't get a restricted shipped to the store, only a NR."
