A 22 probably. I'm a lever gun Guy at heart.so I'd say a henry. But I'd say it depends what your into and what you wanna do

Get a APC, don't fool around with something cheap.

Jk. I would recommend a .22 in semi auto. Or a 12ga, get a good "bang for your buck", (pun intended)

Savage A22 FVSR. It's what a 10/22 wants to be when it grows up.

We got a Ruger club going here? It's a design that's not 58 years old, comes with an accutrigger that makes Volqartsen weep, match grade barrels and 25 round mags that don't need adapters to work. The 10/22 is a legacy gun.

Get your first priority. Is it a black gun, a .22, handgun, etc? Budgeting high or starting out at budget prices? Henry, GSG, Savage make decently priced .22s, which are good on ammo prices and maintenance. GSG is gonna be a little higher maintenance

Bolt action .22 like a cz457 followed by a semi auto .22 like the Ruger 10/22 followed closely by a .223 black rifle like the MCR or WK180. The days for black rifles is numbered under our current regime.
