Is there anyway to put on a matching forend?

u/bwingpilot Motiuk Mfg. Sep 19 '21
What do you mean by matching forend?
3
u/BuzzJr1 Combloc connoisseur Sep 19 '21
I mean a laminated ak74 forend that matches the buttstock

It’s possible. But that would mean a new barrel, with an AK74 barrel profile, rear sight base, handguard cap and gas block. But the barrel is spec’d at 250NM of torque on the trunnion then installed in the sheet steel receiver. I didn’t want to chance rebarreling it due to the value. Didn’t think the juice was worth the squeeze.

It's one of the few things I'd be scared of doing and destroying it. You can't just get a new receiver here sadly :(

Thanks! And I heard back from the lab a few weeks ago. They basically said the timeline they gave me “is no longer feasible” and that they’ll get to it when they get to it 🙄. I’d set your expectations to hear something back from them in about 3 years from now.

Valmet really needs to make more of these for the canadian market.

I'm sure the RCMP would find some excuse to make them prohibited.

yea its funny how they operate. the rcmp suddenly started doing their 10/22 magazine shenanigans after a shitload of the 110 gsg 10/22 drug mags started being imported into the canadian market

I’m not sure how this would work, legally. Others have looked into it, and if I remember right, I think the Valmet trade name is owned by husqavarna or something and they have no interest in making guns or selling the brand name.

Is that one 5.45? Where do you get that kinda ammo?

u/bwingpilot Motiuk Mfg. Sep 19 '21
Still in .223

Sep 19 '21
Is that a .223 Bakelite or are the rounds similar enough that 5 doesn’t really matter?
3
u/bwingpilot Motiuk Mfg. Sep 19 '21
Precisely. 5rnds functions without issues. I’ve heard from guys in the US that said they could get away with about 20rnds in the mag before it became an issue.

So what makes a “valmet” a valmet? What’s the difference vs some random ak receiver, besides some markings?
3
u/Ustauk Sep 20 '21
Aside from it being the only AK variant named as non-restricted, since it was given to First Nations for hunting, Valmets are considered some of the highest quality AKs, period.

Made in Finland. Depending on model some will have AK style safety, others have cross bolt style I think. There's also some difference in front sights IIRC.

What exactly is preventing these from being imported now? Did they just stop making them or was there an import ban?
