Considering either a savage rifle in 30-06 or .300winchester for deer and such, ive looked into a lot of the ballistics, but would anyone suggest one over the other for overall practicality? I would like to try my hand at 1000+ yards shooting eventually. Grew up using a .243 but I wanted something more.

Recoil equals accuracy. We use 243s and 350 legends for deer. 30-06 is over-gunned for deer. It's not necessary.

We use 6.5 creedmoors for deer hunting at longer distances. (When we field hunt over 250yds). Also, 6.5 creedmoor is the long distance shooter choice these days. I cant count the number of gut shot and wounded deer we've found over the years. If you hunt be ethical. The last year we used 350 Legend and its amazingly accurate and extremely light recoil.

Your accuracy will be less with higher caliber rifles. If you chose a large caliber rifle like 30-06 and such, drop your bullet weight to help lighten recoil and increase your accuracy. Recoil does matter in accuracy. Just because your buddies use them doesn't make them right. The rifle needs to fit you - not them. Just my experience and opinion
