Hello, I have two questions. I just bought a Type 81. It shoots the 7.62x39 round. I know it is too big to hunt with in SW Ontario.

1) Can I go to crown land and shoot targets with it in SW Ontario without getting in trouble? All the ranges are closed to non members right now.

2) Can anyone recommend a spot within a few hours drive of SW Ontario that is secluded, wide open and I'm not going to disturb any turkey hunters? I'm looking to try it out for a couple of hundred yards. If you feel more comfortable you can pm me.

I can't answer 2, but I can answer 1.

It's NR which means you can go wherever there is crown land, and where the municipality has not said it's not unavailable to shoot in.

Say what? Any centrefire cartridge is good to go in Ontario, for deer anyway.

Please elaborate.

Hunting regs, plus property owner can set some rules. Shotgun and now only in Halton Regional forests.

Much of southern Ontario is shotgun and now only because of population density. There are a few spots where you can hunt with a rifle though.

Check the hunting regs.

Oh, that's what you meant. That's not really the same as 7.62 being too big, but I gotcha. I'm out east, rifles are good to go out here.

My son uses a Ruger ranch rifle in that caliber. Its great. That caliber will work on deer fine under 200yds or so.

Most deer are taken far less than distance. It'll shoot under 2 MOA.

It also lets him use the bullets in his other rifles in caliber. The bolt action will be much more accurate than a semi.
