Buy recommendations Long range rifle
Hey all
Looking for a long range rifle and need help from people that know more than me about it. So I am thinking about 6.5 creedmoor or 338 lupa. I will probably not fire more than 2000 yards so think the 6.5 should be good any help would help. My budget is 8-15 for rile and scope feel free to send what you think you would buy

What's the purpose? Hunting or just target?
2000 yards is not an easy shot in any way. You'll need practice to get there and 338 will cost you a fortune for that.
Not to mention it's not going to be enjoyable to shoot a lot given its power.
If it's just target I don't see a point in going 338.
If it's hunting, that's incredibly unethical.
The fact you need to ask though and say you don't need much knowledge and seems you've skipped 500 yards and 1000 yards. I feel like this is just a flaunt of disposable income if you'd even be comparing these two given they are incredibly different price ranges

Would all depend. Realistically if you need to ask all this you don't have the skill for it to matter. Whether you buy a sub moa gun or 1 or 2moa you likely can't shoot it anyways.
You're so focused on gun and price completely ignoring the fact of clarity in optics and the skill/fundamentals that shooting 1000+ takes.
I'll spend $6000 on an optic way before I spend $6000 on a rifle and throw a $700 optic on it.
Will you even be reloading? Or do you expect to do this with factory ammo? Cause factory ammo isn't consistent enough for the most part.
Will you be buying other accessories that you'll need for this? Have you ever even looked into ballistics to understand what you need to do for 1000 or 2000 yards?
What about a wind reading?
You can buy a $15000 rifle and someone that actually knows what they're doing will out shoot you with a $1500 rifle.
Will you be going moa or mrad for optic? Do you know the difference?
What about a bipod and chassis?
If I was budgeting that much I'd be doing an action barrel build, not a factory rifle.
Either khales or s&b optic.
Why not consider a 6.5prc?

Do more research and feel how the gun is to be behind.
What works for one won't work for the other.
Just like with clay shooting. One might love the fit of a k80 or guerini, another won't. But just because you buy a $30k perazzi or Beretta sl2, doesn't mean you'll shoot like a AA
You can throw all the money you want at the rifle, it won't make you a better shot.
If you're really serious about hitting 2000 yards get something cheaper and get some actual training.
I'd say aim for $3000 or less on rifle $6000+ for optic. The rest of that budget on the other gear and training.
Maybe a Sako s20 precision and nightforce atacr.

Purpose fun just target and I can learn to reload but the money is not that hard it not like I will pop off a 1000 rounds it is most likely I will put 100-200 rounds per year
Just target I don’t hunt my uncle took me out at 9 with a dear with a 3030 that I never shot
Ya shoot 300 with my 5.56 and it is ok and a few longer
Just looking for info for what to look at not people being upset that I don’t have any real expenses per month

I shoot probably about 40000-60000 rounds per year. How about you? My Ruger 22/45 I do 20-30 a year

Ok but is that at distance? Are you logging dope? Are you learning how to read wind?
I'm not trying to be rude but you're skipping a whole bunch of skill aspect. Did you watch a video from Sam and Mark AW, Texas plinking or impact shooting and think 'i want to do that' ?

I’m leaning and going to take a long rang shooting course by me here in BC I’m not going out and trying to shoot 2000 yards on day one but don’t want to buy the wrong gun and my over all goal to hit a target at that range.

8-15 hundred or thousand? If your budget is 15k I'd say grab something like the Cadex Kraken and a nice piece of glass.

I've got a full custom with a Cadex action. They're extremely nice, they are in the same category as AI.
The Kraken is a multi-caliber system, so you can just buy another bolt face and barrel from Cadex and change calibers down the road. Same idea as the AI AXSR.
If you end out going with 338LM and the Kraken, and you want to stay with 338LM, it will be a good system for you to change the barrels as needed since 338LM is a hot round. Cadex can also spin up a custom barrel for their other actions from the serial number that will have the correct headspacing.

If you want to get into long range save some of that $15k for a practical marksmanship + long range course. It made a world of difference for me, made things super enjoyable. Kinda like golf in away, good to get some fundamentals from a pro.

6.5 Creedmoor and .338 Lapau are very weird to pair together as choices. 6.5 is like a like a bottom of the line Lexus car. Nice, reliable, and somewhat inexpensive.
338 is more like a Greyhound bus. Capable of extraordinary distance but very expensive to run.
Felt recoil between the 6.5 and 338 are almost doubled. 338 will also cost a ton more.
Unless you are literally a police/military sniper, or need the 338 for giant bears or lions or something crazy, you absolutely should be shooting 6.5 or 223 or 308 or anything else over 338

At 2000 or even 1000 with a 338, you'd need excellent recoil management to be same to spot your miss.
You need recoil management regardless, but damn that's a lot harder to do

If you want to avoid developing bad habits and start off on the right foot learning the theory behind long distance shooting, I’d seriously consider taking a proper long-range shooting course, something like:
People sometimes make shooting 2,000 yards sound impossibly difficult, but simply getting a bullet out that far isn’t really the hard part. Hitting a relatively small target within your first few shots is where it becomes challenging. If you’re just plinking for fun and can see your misses, you’ll eventually walk one onto a large target.
If you’re genuinely serious about shooting 2,000 yards, I’d look at a cartridge that can remain supersonic for as much of that distance as possible. Once the bullet transitions through the transonic region and eventually goes subsonic, its behaviour can become less predictable.
That said, I think you’d probably be better served starting with a 6.5 Creedmoor and spending your time getting really competent inside 1,500 yards. You can absolutely stretch a 6.5 Creedmoor farther, but once you start pushing beyond that, there are a lot more variables working against you.
For reference, I’ve connected on a roughly 4-foot piece of steel at 2 km with my 6.5 Creedmoor. It can be done, but I wouldn’t use that as an argument that a 6.5 Creedmoor is an ideal 2,000-yard cartridge.
One thing I’d pay particular attention to when setting up a rifle for long range is your optic. Make sure the scope and mounting setup give you enough available elevation to dial for the distances you want to shoot. I’d also strongly recommend a first focal plane scope for this type of shooting.

338LM is a out of date cartridge. Youre better off with a .30cal bore slinging the 245grs of a .375 cal.

8-15 is well in the full on custom rifle game. If I was you id get KS Arms to throw together a 300PRC/300NM for you if you want the magnum route. Pick out a chassis that tickles you. March Optic or similar high end.

Step 1: Buy a bergara b14 or something similar in .308 or 6.5, drop it in an mdt chassis, mount a nice mrad scope on it
Step 2: work heavily on your fundamentals within 1000m, eventually working your way up to being able to consistently make first round impacts at 1000m. Fundamental marksmanship skills are more important than what rifle you're behind.
Step 3: use the knowledge you have acquired along the way to 1000m to make a more informed personal decision on your what you want for your 2000m rifle setup

I honestly have no idea. Im not up to date on custom components, if I were to just buy an off the shelf rifle the gun dealer in new brunswick has a Browning X-Bolt 2 Pro McMillan Carbon Fiber 300 Win Mag for $5100. And a NIGHTFORCE ATACR 7-35x56mm ZeroStop MIL-C™ F2 Dualscale Illuminated -C627 scope That set up would be great out to 2000 yards, looking at around $11,000 total
