Gun and gear reviews SG-12 SPAS 110 Rounds Later

Edit: Ran 120 shells through the SG-12 today in 25 mins nonstop. Quick note, it’s a winner (with the right ammo).

Summary:
Overall it ran exceptionally well, I’m happy to say no screws are loose, choke remained tight on the bore, stock did not come loose, and the forend stayed on. I ran majority of my shotshells in semi auto, and the shells that gave me a hard time I ran in pump reliably.

The only thing that I noticed was my bolt released seemed to have gotten stuck near the end, I was able to fix it by changing into pump and then pressing the bolt down to release it. Seems to be working fine now, but interested to see how it holds up in the next 100-200 shells I run next.

I did this all under 25 mins, the gun did get hot, it was a vibe seeing the steam come through the vented hand-guard not going to lie.

I ran the following:

What Ran Good:
10 Shotshells of RIO Game Buckshot (1345fps); no malfunctions

10 Shotshells of RIO Game Slugs (1410fps); no malfunctions

25 Shotshells of MILI Defense Buckshot (1350fps); no malfunctions

25 Shotshells of SCORE Competition Slugs (1300fps); no malfunctions in semi auto

25 Shotshells of SCORE Buckshot (1350fps); no malfunctions in semi auto

10 Shotshells of American Whitetail Slugs (1600fps); no malfunctions in semi auto

What Ran Bad:
15 Shotshells of American Gunner Buckshot (1350fps); this didn’t have enough juice for some reason to cycle reliable, had a few instances where it got stuck in the chamber, so the shell lip for the extractor seems like it doesn’t like it. Also had double feeds with this and it was a pia to clear them in semi auto. No issues in pump though which is nice to say. I did run 5 of these in my 1301 and it cycled it flawlessly. So the only times I encountered double feeds or failure to extract was with this ammo only.

Honestly the fact Score runs so good is a huge W, it’s cheap ammo and you can really just blast them all day long.

I really do think I can run a 250 burndown gauntlet with this. Just to see what happens 😉

Now run birdshot. That's the real test in semi. Most semis can run any high brass shells no problem.

The point for me is to run the gun using higher loads to break it in. Maybe after it has a lifetime total of 250 shells of high powered rounds. The manual itself says to run high power shells in semi. Plenty of benelli M4’s have issues out the box with light loads. Honestly to me the real test is survive 500 round burndown of highpower loads. I don’t use birdshot for any of my shotguns, even in the 1301, always buck or slugs. Does the franchi spas 12 even cycle birdshot or light loads reliably? From what I’ve seen it doesn’t fair well, plus a tactical shotgun with birdshot doesn’t really make sense but that’s just me lol

Muldoon would've lived if he'd loaded slugs

The original didn’t run birdshot either. There is a good comparison on YouTube. Trigger group is simplified, gas system is improved and no longer needs an O ring, and no unintegrated buffer. This is also the second generation of this platform, and has lots of feedback and fixes from the first one. The second gen has a rounded receiver, and no weird gap between the pistol grip and trigger guard.
