Gun and gear reviews SG-12 SPAS 110 Rounds Later
Edit: Ran 120 shells through the SG-12 today in 25 mins nonstop. Quick note, it’s a winner (with the right ammo).
Summary:
Overall it ran exceptionally well, I’m happy to say no screws are loose, choke remained tight on the bore, stock did not come loose, and the forend stayed on. I ran majority of my shotshells in semi auto, and the shells that gave me a hard time I ran in pump reliably.
The only thing that I noticed was my bolt released seemed to have gotten stuck near the end, I was able to fix it by changing into pump and then pressing the bolt down to release it. Seems to be working fine now, but interested to see how it holds up in the next 100-200 shells I run next.
I did this all under 25 mins, the gun did get hot, it was a vibe seeing the steam come through the vented hand-guard not going to lie.
I ran the following:
What Ran Good:
10 Shotshells of RIO Game Buckshot (1345fps); no malfunctions
10 Shotshells of RIO Game Slugs (1410fps); no malfunctions
25 Shotshells of MILI Defense Buckshot (1350fps); no malfunctions
25 Shotshells of SCORE Competition Slugs (1300fps); no malfunctions in semi auto
25 Shotshells of SCORE Buckshot (1350fps); no malfunctions in semi auto
10 Shotshells of American Whitetail Slugs (1600fps); no malfunctions in semi auto
What Ran Bad:
15 Shotshells of American Gunner Buckshot (1350fps); this didn’t have enough juice for some reason to cycle reliable, had a few instances where it got stuck in the chamber, so the shell lip for the extractor seems like it doesn’t like it. Also had double feeds with this and it was a pia to clear them in semi auto. No issues in pump though which is nice to say. I did run 5 of these in my 1301 and it cycled it flawlessly. So the only times I encountered double feeds or failure to extract was with this ammo only.
Honestly the fact Score runs so good is a huge W, it’s cheap ammo and you can really just blast them all day long.
I really do think I can run a 250 burndown gauntlet with this. Just to see what happens 😉

Great post! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting actual informative content. The number of people who post their unfired guns on a rug with zero insight is so disappointing. Did you try an accurate group to test slug accuracy potential?

No problem! And unfortunately no, i did have two targets up at 50m (so you can imagine the after math of sending that much lead down range) lol, I did though have a few solid hits with the rio game slugs. I’m sure you can get some accurate hits with some good ammo and pace your shots. I was just sending them flying down range trying to see what malfunctions would be induced.

How ironic would it be if these end up being more reliable then the real deal

What’s the issue with the real deal? All I’ve heard is that they’re not very ergonomic and difficult to reload

From what it seems... it might actually be, at least controls wise. This version lacks the locking lifter (really weird design choice) and it appears to lack the 2nd saftey that has a tendency to UD the firearm when moved to fire. On top of those 2 main major pluses, it doesnt appear to have the same disintegrating buffer that the original SPAS has. So even if this thing jams semi often it will still be an upgrade over the original

Now run birdshot. That's the real test in semi. Most semis can run any high brass shells no problem.

The point for me is to run the gun using higher loads to break it in. Maybe after it has a lifetime total of 250 shells of high powered rounds. The manual itself says to run high power shells in semi. Plenty of benelli M4’s have issues out the box with light loads. Honestly to me the real test is survive 500 round burndown of highpower loads. I don’t use birdshot for any of my shotguns, even in the 1301, always buck or slugs. Does the franchi spas 12 even cycle birdshot or light loads reliably? From what I’ve seen it doesn’t fair well, plus a tactical shotgun with birdshot doesn’t really make sense but that’s just me lol

The original didn’t run birdshot either. There is a good comparison on YouTube. Trigger group is simplified, gas system is improved and no longer needs an O ring, and no unintegrated buffer. This is also the second generation of this platform, and has lots of feedback and fixes from the first one. The second gen has a rounded receiver, and no weird gap between the pistol grip and trigger guard.

Is that a sks sling?
5
u/ExpensiveKoi 9d ago
Yeah lol, I’ve got some metal snap hooks coming to replace the leather straps. Just to make it look a bit better in the gun!

Thx lmk if u find a sling that looks cool on it, preferably one that is sold on Amazon, I really don't wanna have to put a sks sling on mine if i don't have to lol, mine still in transit :(

Will do, I’ve been trying to find something that looks like the OG sling too. I’ll let you know if I come across anything!

Can you link to the snap hooks you ordered? I've got an AK style sling that needs one. Cheers.

Got them from amazon, it should come sometime this week. If it’s not horrible quality and seems half decent I’ll send you the link to it!

I usually have decent luck with Turkish, if they’re just for fun, I really see no issue with them.

Never had an issue with a Turkish firearm. I've got several. They run just as well as anything else I own. The worst firearm I've ever owned was Canadian made - that absolute piece of shit WK180 Gen 2. Literally rattled apart each time I shot it.

Honestly I don’t understand this obsession of “if it’s not my fighting shotgun reliable I don’t want it” like bruh I already have a mossberg, everything else is a vibe, can’t wait to get mine

I need an absolutely reliable platform with an 800 red dot to mag dump at trash.

Did you take it apart and lube it or anything it is this straight out of the box? Nice work thanks for the video.

u/ExpensiveKoi 9d ago
Just did a quick field strip to get most of the packing grease off. CLP to clean and lube up the internals of the receiver and the gas tube just cleaned the exterior. Honestly did it in 10mins so you could definitely put more time in getting it ready but I didn’t feel the need to!

I swear the majority of videos I see of guys shooting on here they have terrible trigger finger discipline...
Nice to see someone that understands what it is!

Where do I buy it?

u/ExpensiveKoi 7d ago
Tactical Imports, it’s out of stock for now, but hopefully stock arrives in 2-3 months! There is gunpost but I’d avoid, lots of scalped prices there right now.

Have any spas12 owners found a way to make the stock latches easier to use? Mine are super tight both the stock and the folding latch

Garbage
5
u/ExpensiveKoi 9d ago
That “garbage” is giving me more fun than my 1301 build lol.
0
u/LeeFrann 9d ago
Why? Did you not run "110 rounds" through your 1301 yet?
0
u/ExpensiveKoi 7d ago
I’ve put over 750 rounds of buck/slugs through my 1301, no problems cause that’s expected lol. The 1301 is proven already, the SG-12 isn’t and it’s Turkish. Imo having something perform better than expected is more “fun” cause it leaves a lot to the unknown. Plus it’s got a lifetime warranty; if it breaks I’ll just get a replacement. I can’t say if it’s garbage, cause it has yet to prove that it is to me. Either way this thing looks sick on my wall. To each their own.
