Dealing with gunpost

When buying or selling something on gunpost and someone responds to your ad with a profile but has either no reviews or recently made the account less then a week, month or six months? Do you even respond ? What's the cut off? Or offered you a deposit but can't pick it up for a month? (I have had this also now) Just say screw it and decide to keep it instead lol?

I don't see any risk dealing with a zero rating user or new user. Verify PAL, collect EMT, ship gun. Simple.

Literally this. Very simple steps that guarantee safety. Lots of new pal holders and people who just do F2F / don’t review. We were all there once

I'll deal with new accounts like this: full payment up front. Pal required obviously, only shipped and no local meet ups.

What’s the issue with local meetups?
Either way, the main struggle I have is dealing with non-pal required trades, such as for flashlights and optics. Not fully sure how reputable the user should be before agreeing to the exchange

I don't trust random people on the internet. No need to take the risk when someone is willing to have it shipped.

Non-issue for me. I just ship the thing after getting the emt.

For the seller the risk is zero. Verify the PAL, get the money, send package in a timely fashion.

For the buyer, different story. Even good outcomes can be a little hair raising.

I once purchased a very valuable thing from an old francophone who didn't own a cellphone. His communication was really poor, (I didn't know he was an old french luddite at the time) and I though he took my big stack of cash and dipped. Turns out he was just chilling on his computer at the time I first contacted him, and only goes on the thing like once a week if that. He sent the package the next time he went to the post office, which was like 7-8 days after EFT and sent it the snailiest of mail. I actually got the package before he ever replied to my "Ummm HELLO!..." messages. When he did it was just "I send it. Did you get?" It all worked out but it was pretty nerve racking.

If you have any concerns as the buyer and shipping is required, a quick video call will typically be enough to determine if the person is being honest.

. You have to verify the PAL anyways, so instead of emailing a picture of it, after RCMP website verification, you're supposed to visually confirm the PAL.

. You may as well do it over a video call AND get them to show you the thing you're buying.

I never talk them down, etc.. yet I have never received reviews.

they are local, its cash, and done face to face in public after i verify PAL or....
sure i can send it after i verify PAL.... then ship it COD....

No down payments.
contact me when you have the full amount and if its still up for sale else fuck off.

new or old account makes no difference.

If the they decide they don't want the gun during transit they can just refuse to pay the COD and then you get stuck with the fees.

EMT can't be reversed once it's accepted by the seller.

As someone who works in the courier industry, COD is never not a problem. It's a PiA to set up, your paying an extra fee for the privilege, and the receiver "was never told they had to pay for the shipment." And that has nothing to do with it being a firearm. EMT all the way

Etransfer can't be reversed once it's deposited. Setup auto-deposit and you'll be fine 99.999% of the time.

Can be reverse on fraud case. Interac transfers are notorious for that on facebook marketplace deals that goes wrong.

that seems to be general consensus.

My concern is mostly around using an insecure transmission like email - lots of risks there... or at least there used to be. I understand that Canadian banks use strong encryption so maybe some my worry is unwarranted... but compromised emails and phishing scams seem to be on the uptick so thats a good portion of my distrust.

Anyhow, as a business im sure you witness more transactions that i on any given day, so i'll trust your opinion on this ;)

The money isn't sent by email. You're just notified by email. Your bank requires you to login to accept it, or do nothing if you have auto deposit. I've received thousands of EMTs. It's fine.

ah ok, thought it worked that you got an email with a link, which you clicked, which then opened up a browser that enables you to authenticate with your bank to deposit.

Never take deposits, have them pay in full and they take it now or leave it.

If you're doing EMT, just be careful a lot of people try to scam in classifieds. Instead of sending you money that you can deposit, they send you a money request which means you're paying them.

The other precaution I hear people do is turn off auto deposit for EMT and make sure to get the password from them and accept the payment manually. Usually EMT are irreversible, but I seen a few stories where others have said banks have reversed the transfer because the sender claimed it was sent to the wrong person or wrong amount.

Giving you a deposit and not being able to pick it up for a month is known as the deposit scam.

You can check over at r/scams for different variations of this but the general idea is:

• they send you a cheque for more than what the original deposit was for

• they wait a day or two for the funds to show in your account (most banks will make funds available within 48hr and then request the other bank to verify the funds)

• they reach out to ask you for a portion back because they "made a mistake" and sent too much or have something urgent come up requiring their funds or ask you to send back the full deposit as they can no longer purchase. They will ask you to use something non-reversible like etransfer, wire transfer, crypto, gift cards, etc. to do this.

• you send the requested money back via the methods they ask.

What happened is you used an immediate payment method to pay them. Their cheque is fraudulent and will bounce leaving you on the hook for the amount you sent + bounced check fees and possibly even having your bank account closed due to being part of fraudulent activity.

Sure but I only do face to face deals with a friend around and like to have a phone call before hand. The deposit would be a hard no for me.

I sold a shotgun on there a few months ago I was a new account and was my first ad. had a guy from one province over message me we set up a video call checked everything over verified pal together and he sent me money I sent him the shotgun

I’m new to gunpost, bought from a seller with no reviews in a local meet up today. Nothing wrong just a deal between two dudes who like firearms. Not everyone buy/sell a bunch and have multiple reviews. I would prefer to meet and pay in cash in these situations. If I need to EMT and have something shipped it will likely involve asking for more pictures, details and hopefully buy from someone with good reviews.

No deposits. I’ve been burnt on it before get the sob story Now if they must. It’s not refundable for any reason. Usually gets them to stop asking

I’ve done more than a few GP transactions. People didn’t trust me when I was new but now seems to be now problem. Weirdest transaction, I ordered some rings from a person in a rural address, he didn’t accept EMT. I sent him cash through the mail in an old Christmas card. He received the cash and shipped my rings. Worked out no problem.
