News / Politics / Activism Will the new Tarrifs drive up Gun Prices?
Just was wondering if these new 50% tarrifs will drive up the cost of new firearms coming from America?
Eg. Carmel and Makasi ?
I read over the list and all the items and it doesnt say anything about firearms/parts/accessories/scopes/ammunition
Am i missing something?
I dont really feel like paying another 50% on top of the price of the Carmel and I dont think anyone else here does either

If i remember correctly the first round of tarrifs affected "sporting goods".

u/No_Maybe4408 27d ago
But the septum ringed blue hairs tell me they are absolutely not sporting goods at all.

Septum ringed blue hair here. I own more guns than you.

Probably not.

Regardless, quit trying to "us vs them" this and take the support, even if someone looks different from you. Don't be a divisionist loser.

Yeah, our hobby thrives when everyone can feel like they’re welcome to do it.

Lmao last I checked it wasn’t conservatives pushing policies to strip away guns.

u/Murray3-Dvideos 24d ago
Getting down voted for posting a straight fact. Lol. Ah the reddit experience..

It's not a binary system, Budd.
Go far enough left and we're frothing for boomsticks.

u/I-LOVE-HENRY-RIFLES 27d ago
That’s what they say and then suddenly only the government has guns. Even worse than what we have now. See USSR and Cambodia and North Korea for reference. For a modern example please look at Cuba. Funny how that works eh? Already know what you are gonna say. “That wasn’t real socialism!”
18
u/TehSvenn 27d ago
So how do you figure pushing people away from the hobby and community will make any of that better? Sounds like you'd rather just whine than work to improve things.
I don't give a fuck if someone calls themselves a liberal or a conservative. If someone wants to improve firearms regulations away from the joke of a system we have now, I'm gonna support that. I don't give a shit of they're straight or gay, I don't care if they've got blue hair, I don't care if they have piercings. None of that changes them being on the side of common sense gun control, and I'm not gonna push them away.
Hell, they're probably gonna have a whole lot more luck convincing those who've been propagandized against firearms than I am. And the more people can be shown the rational way, the happier I'll be.

u/I-LOVE-HENRY-RIFLES 27d ago
One day you’ll realize that the LPC voters that are gun owners don’t care about the sport but by then it’ll be too late. Did you see any of them vote for PP to save guns? I sure didn’t. And yes I’m a single issue voter on guns. One side wants total bans. Other side wants reasonable limits. By bringing more LPC voters into the sport you are just gonna get even more bans. How long until some lib thinks lever guns can be operated too fast and need to be banned? Or that pump actions are too quick?

Time to start shooting Norma and Sako instead of Hornady or Federal. And to be honest, the price increases this past year from Hornady and Federal due to the US tariffing components needed to make things like primers and powders, Norma and Sako ammo has become competitive price wise with those brands (hell in some cases Norma whitetail is now cheaper on my shelves than federal blue box).
Theres non-us based options out there to keep you shooting and your wallet not exploding. But yeah definitely super disappointing news.
13
u/Lumindan 27d ago
Didn't federal also just land a huge deal supplying our military lol? That'll be awkward
Edit - found it.
Federal Ammunition was recently awarded contracts to supply two Canadian law enforcement organizations with rifle and shotgun ammunition for duty and training purposes. These agreements will supply the Department of National Defense (DND) with 300 Blackout duty and training rounds, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) with 12-gauge slugs and buckshot duty loads.

u/LumberjackCDN Gold'n Loan Outfitters & Pawn 27d ago
Yup. Super interesting stuff. If half the things that are reported to be the deal breakers turn out to be true no sane govt would have agreed, especially the stuff about us not being able to make our own trade deals with other countries.
Like i said super disappointing. But what can ya do. Hopefully my shop survives but its looking like its going to be a tough 2 and a half years.

I want to believe that firearms owners will keep supporting local businesses. I just bought a few thousand rounds from my local store (not a massive order but not small).

Ive already noticed a slow down. Could just be the weather and the fact we havent had much of a summer here, but i also cant discount 2 dollar diesel eating into peoples fun money. I know it has my own.
4
u/Lumindan 27d ago
There will hopefully be a spike coming up with hunting season too.
Funny enough my local range saw an uptick of members this year (but that could be an outlier).
But you're on the ball there, cost of living goes up which means less money to throw at fun stuff.

u/Scary-Detail-3206 27d ago
The past 4 times I’ve been to our range on the weekend, there has been an orientation for new members with 4-5 people. Might just be all the people moving to Alberta though.

u/LumberjackCDN Gold'n Loan Outfitters & Pawn 27d ago
One can hope. The hunting season ramp up should kick off shortly which will help for sure.

I have exclusively bought European ammo since the beginning of 2025. There is some good stuff with Norma and Sako, and affordable options with PPU and S&B.
Last 5 gun purchases were also from Europe.

Yup same, im moving all my stuff slowly from federal to norma, sako and eley as i run out of the stuff i already have.

u/LongRoadNorth 25d ago
As you should anyways. Hornady is over priced garbage in my experience.
The Sako TRG groups way better and is cheaper.

Haven't seen a list of counter-tariffs yet. Carney only announced it today so we will have to wait to see if anything will affect gun imports.

u/Mysterious_Sleep7443 27d ago
From what they are saying the retaliatory tarrifs will be on the exact same products that the US has imposed on us
If thelist is different and they add firearms/accessories we are Fked

-Tariffs start to affect steel imports/exports both ways
-Firearms made of steelI don’t see this not becoming a problem (naturally or panic manufactured by companies to explain why their prices just had to go up)
7
u/Lashiech 27d ago
I suspect it depends on which sectors the retaliatory tariffs are applied to, or if they even go into effect. We're in a sit and wait sort of moment while the dust settles.
17
u/CanadaFootyFan 27d ago
If you mean the tariffs Canada is imposing in retaliation, they aren’t public yet.
If you mean the tariffs America is imposing, that’s not how they work.

u/Neat_Imagination2503 27d ago
Well we’ve been told they are weapons of war, not sporting goods so we should be fine

I believe my Makasi preorder offers a full deposit refund if any pricing changes before arrival
1
u/Johnny-Unitas 26d ago
It will drive up the price of anything coming from the US in all likelihood.

u/LongRoadNorth 25d ago
I mean my shotgun got hit with tariffs when this first started the other year. That absolutely fucking sucked to pay an extra 20% on.
Time will tell. I'm happy that I just checked and at least the powder I use is actually from Australia

5
u/Mysterious_Sleep7443 27d ago
Its coming from IWI US in Tennessee
2
u/__phil1001__ 27d ago
That's the mistake, they put all offices in the US and treat us as an extension. We need our own head offices and direct imports
10
u/Reasonable_Hall2346 27d ago
Nobody in business will take on that risk with the current government, or even future governments. Imagine investing millions into your company, and over night your products become illegal. Its already happened over and over here...
1
u/__phil1001__ 27d ago
Agreed but what are the other options, stay vulnerable to every whim of the US.
6
u/Reasonable_Hall2346 27d ago
Its not the whims of the US that has gotten us like this in the firearm hobby. Its the whims of emotional and illogical decisions by our incompetent government. The only reason we can't have non-US alternatives is because of all the bans. I'd rather have a Raven or a Sterling Arms R18 MK3 rather than the Carmel and Makasi. Both of which would have directly supporting Canadian companies/operations. But yeah no apparently too scary.
Use the Sterling Arms R9 as an example. It was the Canadian "alternative" to the only other 9mm (Henry Homesteader). Look at what happened to it...

u/LumberjackCDN Gold'n Loan Outfitters & Pawn 27d ago
Israel but if it lands in the US it becomes a problem. Ran into this with vortex last year. Scopes arent us made but landed there and were tarriffed by the US, before coming up to us.
1
u/Mysterious_Sleep7443 27d ago edited 27d ago
Are you sure its Israel?
I was under the impression its from the US ?
Are they coming from Israel and being rebarreled at IWI in Tennessee?
1
u/Iokua_CDN 27d ago
That's my secret, I'm just skipping American guns for the near future. I'm more of a budget firearm guy, so the Carmel and Makasi weren't on the menu anyways, but my business is going to other countries.

Likely see something similar this time around.

Google telling me it is produced in both Israel and Middletown, Pennsylvania.
I’d assume wherever the Tavors that Canada received were made, that’s where the carmels will come from.

Look at your FX9 for example, its priceless, you cant purchase it anymore

Stay away from that Turkish garbage
Get on the wait list for the Carmel if your going to buy anything semi auto
You will need to but 2 or 3 of the Adler Arms because when the first one breaks down you will need a doner gun for parts
For the price of 2 or 3 Adler arms your into it for the same price as a Carmel
