I agree the police are trash and take up way too many of our tax dollars. Huge waste of taxpayer money. If they were a private business they would have been fired long ago. Expenses go up every year but their results are worse and worse.
The issue is not the police nor police funding/hiring more police, etc. They generally do a good job at catching criminals or seizing guns, drugs, etc. They have to do a job even when it's saying stupid shit during town halls with the public.
The real problem is the criminal courts that keep letting out repeat offending criminals on bail. A lot of these courts also get their direction from the federal government through all the most recent criminal justice bills.
I saw a stat that in Regina, SK, one guy is responsible for like 40% of the city's crime. One cop friend of mine said that he arrested a guy one night for whatever crime and then the same guy saw him at a Tim Horton's the next morning and said "Hi, officer, you arrested me last night....well see ya later."
The police don't do a good job at stopping crime and when they use excessive force, their union protects them and the average citizen has no recourse. And to top it all off they often take up the biggest chunk in city budgets. What a waste. Catch and release justice system is terrible as well. Both can be true.
Maybe you need lots of authoritarian police to make you feel safe, but I don't. That makes me feel less safe and wastes tax dollars. Winnipeg police spent over a quarter million dollars on a robot dog in 2021. It's been deployed once since then. And they refuse to buy body cams because of the cost. It's a joke with no accountability in spending or conduct.
