Partially off-topic since OP was already answered and it's not uncommon to wonder what should/may happen to family firearms after someone passes away.

If an Estate executor doesn't have a PAL they are allowed to take possession of the firearms (NR, R and Prohib) and keep them in storage for as long as it takes to execute the wishes of the Will or the interests of the Trustees in benefit of the Will.

If someone's father/uncle/grandmother/whomever has firearms, their choice in executors doesn't have to accommodate having a PAL or not.

Edit: i do know someone who was in this situation, after a year they got their RPAL just to keep storing them because most of the estate would soon be settled and while there's no legal time limit, the crown may have a case to make against you if the entire estate is settled and you still have the firearms.
