News / Politics / Activism Feds Won't Block Supreme Court Interveners
The Attorney General of Canada just informed the SCC it won't oppose the groups asking to join CCFR v. Canada as interveners, thereby allowing them to participate in the case.
This isn't a ruling on the merits, just the AGC declining to block their entry. Intervener status itself doesn't declare a side, but based on what these orgs publicly stand for, it's not hard to guess. To keep it simple, 11 of the 12 interveners are likely to side with the CCFR, against 1 which is explicitly on the government's side.

Interesting that the NFA just signed up as an intervener after saying the CCFR taking this to the Supreme Court was a waste on time. (Photo for reference)

They never said going to the Supreme Court was pointless. They said appealing themselves wasn't worth the cost/risk. Now that CCFR already won leave to appeal, the risk is way lower. Being an intervener is a far smaller commitment than leading an appeal. You file a factum and make limited arguments, you're not bankrolling the whole case or bearing the same financial risk they were worried about. Different bet, not a flip-flop.

I'm glad to see multiple firearms bodies jumping in. Let's hope their voices are heard.
I'm still keeping my hopes incredibly low because my faith in our court system is uh, not high to say the least.

It would significantly shift the landscape towards the "you'll own nothing and you'll like it" meta.
Granted the government could just slam a follow up bill or buried omnibus policy to reban everything but that might just be the cynic in me speaking.
Like we're seeing the government push draconian spy laws, continuously challenge their use of the emergency act etc.
It's already not a good look right now but people are kinda sleep walking through it.

I’m glad the ORA is involved. Good to have more than one sporting organization intervening. They make up for the DCRA not doing anything

Ah yes good Wendy and her misinformation.
I'll snippet a chunk of their support document for the buyback/confiscation and we can have a good but sad laugh about it.
The CGC along with its more than 200 public health, violence prevention, public safety, community, women’s, and victims’ organizations have advocated for evidence-based approaches to preventing gun violence for almost 35 years. Despite the voracious opposition, the Government of Canada is continuing with its Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program (ASFCP) combined with other measures to support the safety of Canadians through an effective approach to public safety.
This is their first boldfaced lie.
This is an important part of a comprehensive strategy - Canada should continue to address the root causes of violence and to strengthen screening and eligibility for all firearms owners, to ensure that the ban on handgun sales, transfers, and importation are implemented and enforced as intended. In parallel, stronger measures to disrupt gun trafficking and illegal supply chains are essential. Serious commitments to implementation, enforcement capacity, and measurable results are required for any legislative change to deliver real public safety benefits.'
Real public safety benefits and fighting crime...by targeting legal ownership (which they consider the root cause).
It's honestly impressive how bold they are in their misinformation.
Funny enough, public safety and Poly use the same talking points, it's all cut from the same cloth

'The Coalition for Gun Control supports the Government of Canada’s Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program (ASFCP) which is launching for individual firearms owners on January 19, 2026. While mass shootings are rare in Canada, when they do occur the firearms involved are often legally obtained and possessed by licensed owners.
Hopefully someone calls them out on their lies!

Not really if you've seen anything they release. They're just another Poly group.
If the judges aren't judging on vibes then we're in better shape.
If they are, we'll that's just be another day I guess.

Would be nice if other AGs joined in too - i.e. MB, NB, NL, NS, and the northern territories too which have expressed opposition to the confiscation scheme.
