Recurring Canadaguns Politics and Debate Thread

Please post all your Gun Politics or Ban-related ideas, questions, initiatives, comments, suggestions, news articles, and recommendations in this thread. This thread recurs every 14 days.

First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.

This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.

To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.

We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.

Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

This ruling is a reason to be more optimistic about our chances at the SCC. In case anyone needed a bit of good news.

It is especially relevant for anyone who had their restricted firearm's registration Thanos-snapped.

And it's even better because it was a 9-0 decision against the current and former governments.

The especially damning part is that it was a unanimous ruling.

Like for reference in 2024 they only ruled unanimously 38% of the time. They had a leadership change a few years ago so there's a lot more 'voices' so it could go either way still.

Is it bad though that I read the headline and went "Which Scandal and which ethics problem?"

It is the Liberal norm. Scandal and ethics violations overload so people lose track. When its a single fuck-up, everyone remembers. When you have fuck-up after fuck-up, people forget. Trudeau's ethics were always poor.

Well the SCC wouldn't have taken on the case if they were going to agree with the Federal Courts determination/ruling. Personally I feel like we will get some W's but then the SCC will say something like "These OIC powers were illegal and FRT isn't legally enforceable, however a "stay of proceedings" will remain in effect for 12 months" so that basically gives Carney's majority gov to pass legistlation to just ban everything they already banned by OIC anyways, so we as gun owners may see no changes other than the CFP/Exceutive branch no longer being allowed to OIC shit anymore, which even if that's what comes out of the SCC case, is still a huge W.

If the CPC wants to win, they need to run a different campaign than the last three times. The failure of the buyback program and OIC overreach should basically make it like hitting a tee-ball, but nobody seems as apt as snatching defeat from the jaws of victory quite like the Conservatives.

At least they got rid of Jenni Byrne as campaign manager, but they need to get her alllllll the way out. She's like the Wormtongue of shit ideas.

Jenni was shit as a campaign manager, but the ONLY main reason LPC won was because Boomers not having to worry about much and most being well off and being the vast majority of paid-off home owners, heard that some foreign president said some mean things about Canada while they were watching CBC, with dementia kicking in full-swing forgetting about the last 10 years, just because of evil Orange man bad, and that somehow Pierre was connected to him...

I'm going to preface this with the fact that I dislike the current government as much as anyone else here, as people seem to think I'm shitting on conservatives as a whole. I'm really not, I'm just looking at the previous few elections and pointing out what needs to change for us to not deal with more of the same.

You are absolutely correct in that the LPC appeals heavily to boomers who own houses. The conservatives, however, partly due to Byrne's guidance, made three giant mistakes:

  • Focusing way, way too hard directly attacking Justin Trudeau and not LPC policies. When Trudeau stepped aside, it sucked the wind out of their sails completely. He was campaigning entirely against Trudeau, not the liberal party.

  • Not immediately condemning the threats of tariffs and the 51st state nonsense. I suspect they were waiting for polling data to tell them if it was safe to do so in their stronghold areas, but by the time they actually did it, the damage was done.

  • Not repeatedly shoving the OICs and their overreach down the Liberals' throats. Their platform didn't even mention un-doing any of the liberals' bans.

It was essentially a rehash of the previous election, also managed by Byrne, which was itself just a more aggressive play of the one before it.

At a certain point, if you're at the range and consistently shooting a foot low, you need to adjust your zero. If you keep shooting and just blame the target, you're simply wasting ammo.
