Buy recommendations Getting into Semi's
Hey guys, I've got me a nice hunting rifle and a good shotgun, a Tikka t3x, and a mossberg 590, looking to get into semi autos and just looking for recommendations from anybody who's shot the specific models and what they would recommend? I fired the SKS and the Citadel, was wondering about the akdas and Henry homesteader, any advice would be nice

If you are set on getting a 5.56/.223 then just wait for the makasi or the carmel to come in they will be much better quality than the Turkish ones that you are looking at.
Sks is always a good pick I would recommend getting a wood stock one because the ati stock that I had was garbage.
My homesteader has been good for me I would recommend one but only because all of the better options have been banned

Every canadian needs an sks. If you want more semi auto get another sks. Then maybe another sks. After that you might as well collect sks.

as much as I agree with the SKS, (I definitely plan on getting one at somepoint) the near 1000 dollar price tag for one is a pretty rough sell right now, some of those SKS I looked at don't even look that good condition wise to begin with. the supplies drying up is definitely real, even the mosins are getting greasy

I dont think they are a tough sell at their price point. Where I shop they had a bunch of them and id see people coming in for one. The next time I came in they were sold out. They had dozens on display just before. Down vote me if your a cuck

Avoid the Adler AD500, and the Alcor. Theyre poorly made and riddled with quality control problems. The henry homsteader is super cool, and so is the SKS.

I just picked up a homesteader last week. And just got back in from my first day out with it.
I loved the thing. Its my first 9mm rifle, so i dont have much of an educated opinion, but its an absolute blast to shoot. The ammo is dirt cheap compared to other center fire rounds. And its crazy accurate/reliable out of the box.
Not a single issue during the whole day today, and I burned through 400 rds.
Compared to your other non pistol caliber rifles here though, its a different ball game entirely. If you want something with a bit more kick than a .22 and cheap ammo, go with the homesteader. If you want longer range and dont mind a bit more cost for ammo then go with one of your other options.
Keep in mind the 2 new semis coming to the market too. Theyre pricy, but they're nice haha.

Might be a slightly more unpopular opinion but Benelli R1 is an excellent rifle from what I’ve seen
It’s offered in a variety of different calibres from 308 to 30-06 and 338 win mag.
Pretty sure you can also import more magazines for it as well and I believe some are 10rnds that are pinned to 5.

I also have a T3X in .308 and 590a1, and side grades to those rifles you've looked at.
Sks is meh, it's not very accurate. They are pretty expensive nowadays compared to a few years ago. They arent great for hunting, the most widely available ammunition is corrosive so you'll be cleaning your rifle constantly. I got one because they were cheap but completely stripping and cleaning after ever little shooting session got old quick. Wouldn't recommend.
Henry homesteader would be fun, I have a similar gun in 9mm, upgraded it like crazy. Was super fun and cheap to shoot. Had more jam then .22lr. But it's been banned, the homesteader is literally the exact same gun, so likely may also be added to the list. I have thousands of rounds of useless 9mm now. If it gets banned you'll also have a bunch of useless magazines and ammunition in a caliber there aren't lever gats or single shots available for. Recommended but be cautious.
Ruger 10/22 is pretty good for chicken hunting, plinking, cheap to get, cheap to shoot, likely won't get banned and very customizable. Easy safe recommend.
After a season hunting with the tikka, i got the heebie jeebies over all the first hand hunting stories- cougar attack, bear attacks and even moose charges from coworkers and friends. So I ended up getting the new (semi auto) BAR mk4 in .308. Its been really nice, the box hinge mag gives me hopium that it won't get banned, it's sub moa after finding the right ammunition (Hornady 178gr eldx out of trying 11 different brands and weights). PMC bronze ammunition is relatively cheap for plinking and practice, and it's very capable for hunting. Wouldn't get it if it wasn't for walking through the brush in the middle of nowhere. Recommend depending on hunting style, but your tikka is already a good hunting rifle and if you are with a buddy then it's hard to justify another hunting rifle.
Brother had a wk180. It's a neat rifle and I believe now you might be able to hunt deer with it but if it's just a plinker then your better off with a smaller cheaper less likely to get banned rifle.

See the one point I always see brought up is the price of an SKS. While the cheapest one I bought was under 200 canadian pesos back in 2019 the most expensive one I bought was almost 700, that being said it is still the cheapest semi auto center fire on the market and ammo is still some of the cheapest out there, even the norinco red box. So for a fun gun semi auto the sks is still a very viable and great option, plus with the more there are the harder it would be to ban

I still just have a tough time buying one for more than 300$ as it's a non accurate, not very effectively mod host platform for anything other than plinking.
If I was new into guns it wouldn't have to auto value but like it did back a few years ago but I see your point.

Although it is catered towards hunting a 308 would be nice. If you want an intermediate cartridge I would highly point you in the direction of the Carmel or Makasi.
Sks is always a solid option too but lacks versatility when it comes to things like barrel changes or optics.

My list would be SKS, Homesteader, Benelli R1, and Browning BAR. I feel like Turkish guns are too much of a gamble for qc. Semi auto shotguns are also a ton of fun, I'd love to get a 1301 oneday.

I will always advocate for the SKS because of how simple and straightforward it is. Always shoots never breaks, ammo is plenty and cheap and its an amazing rifle

Go SKS and don't look back. Are prices insane now compared to before? Yes. Has the market changed? Yes. Does Canada suck for options? Yes. Can you get a 7.62 semi auto that'll last 3 lifetimes with guaranteed reliability and is a straight shooting workhorse for under $800? Im Canada, no.
Don't spend the money on the Adler or Turkish guns. You'll hate yourself for buying it the first range day, and if you ever shoot even an SKS, you'll understand function over fashion and why Turkish guns are called "Turkshit."
But speaking of that Adler, if you're into a semi-auto in higher calibers, that Adler is modeled after a Browning BAR and you can grab one used for around that price.
The Winchester Model 100 can also be had for a very reasonable price.
And use Gunpost and forums, don't by new in these times; those Turkish firearms look JUST cool enough to make you think the price is fair, but you can get tons of quality, respected firearms for half that price and you'll never have an issue.
Anyway, basically any carbine or 22 plinker will do the job, but you might feel the need to go bigger in the future considering your familiarity with your hunting rigs, so my vote is the 3 I mentioned above.
